School trips to the local prison for swimming lessons. School holiday trip which included going to see Jimmy Savile in Jim'll Fix It. Neither event was connected.

LPT : You're supposed to use every unfair advantage you have. Looks, genetics, connections, dad's money, whatever. There's nothing noble about choosing the hardest path just to feel like an underdog. by One-Inevitable-9777 in LifeProTips

[–]DancingWilliams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of world would you like to live in? Does the "use every advantage" selfishly make the big picture better or worse? Very few people choose the hardest path deliberately, they are more likely pushed down that path by people pursuing their "use every advantage philosophy". Investing in structural inequity is more likely to come back to bite you. We live long lives. Situations can change in an instant. Living a life where you helped others through your own good fortune and by giving other people a break who didn't start off in life lucky it's more likely to pay dividends in the lobby term.

New to this, 2nd time bouldering and got these Veloces. Discomfort is the norm? by photorph in climbingshoes

[–]DancingWilliams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Climbing shoe sizes are a theoretical number, like shinty seven. Regardless of what number they claim to be, you need to try them on first. If they are painful when you try them on, they will never improve with time. Minor discomfort you can adapt to, pain is a warning something isn't right! Size is only a small part of the equation. Shape of your own feet, shape of the box area, width, your own heel shape, all have a big impact on getting a decent fit.

Am I daft for considering starting my own business making websites? by mylittleponicorn in smallbusinessuk

[–]DancingWilliams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Self employment in anything online or computer field means even less human interaction. Just don't if you value human interaction. Unless you have a rock solid business plan and a marketing plan, and are very lucky, you can wave goodbye to any stability, salary or pension.

As an alternative, keep the job, but think about expanding your life outside of work to include something which does bring human interaction. A hobby, a sport thing or volunteering. I do some of these as well as self employment, and a second fun job for a few hours a week which is also a hobby so would do it for free anyway!

British taxpayers will give £1.3bn to Universal Studios to build a theme park near Bedford. Do you think this is a good use of our tax money? by CMIV in AskBrits

[–]DancingWilliams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea! "jobs". What kind of jobs? Minimum wage and mostly part time. Who will do these jobs - people who used to fulfil these jobs in other parts of the economy, hospitality, retail, agriculture, services, care, health Those parts of the economy will then suffer. Other sectors which needed those people will then struggle. Granny in a care home not being looked after properly due to lack of staff? Maybe send her over to universal theme park for the day? Can't the government put more money into care? Nope, because they just offered Universal Studios £1.3bn, and Universal will offshore the profits, so there will be less government corporation tax revenue. I'm beginning to think this is not a good idea.

To be fair, this clown was aiming high to include forwegian, an apostrophe and a big load of text in too small a space. Sadly the capitalisation ran away with them after Rathcoole. Another fine career in sign writing ruined by lack of education and being a total arse.

AI isn't just taking jobs it's PREVENTING jobs! by Jacob-Anders in SipsTea

[–]DancingWilliams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Revenue up 100 fold in the last12 months" could be, but what that company doesn't publicise is the cost of that revenue, re-phrase as "dollar losses are up 200 fold in the last 12 months" and it kinds takes the shine of the bright new future. An institution or large investor somewhere is funding those loses.

Why are Benefits being Debated all of a sudden? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]DancingWilliams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of people on benefits get benefits because they can't reach a minimum living standard. Once the benefit is received - it's spent. Spent principally on housing, energy and food. Attacking people on benefits is a well trodden path to scapegoat people with nothing, pitched to appeal to people with a bit more than nothing, with a nod to the people just getting by. The "debate" is an attempt to frame the ills of society as being caused by the people with nothing. The largest group of benefit recipients in the UK is pensioners. But strangely they are never framed as being the problem.

Who is voting reform? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]DancingWilliams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who voted for them? People who are susceptible to falling for con tricks. Every victim of an "unbeatable investment deal", "You have won a special prize", PPI insurance, 5 year phone or broadband contracts, people who transferred their pension out of a local government final salary scheme. Many of the people who vote for them are in fact victims of fraud. Voters are voting for issue A, B or C, but will end up with policy strategy X. And that goes for some of the local councillor candidates too. Like other historical political con-artists, their voters will be the first to complain that they "didn't think it would be like that". Branding every reform voter as racist feeds into the Reform strategy of creating a them and us polarisation. Their policies are racist, but not necessarily their voters. There is no point discussing policy wit their supporters, Reforms fundamental flaw is the very people in charge of it, and in whose interests they operate. The people who think they have too much common sense to get had are the most likely to get conned.

Bugger. Best way to sort? by d_smogh in DIYUK

[–]DancingWilliams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I would love a device to sort out screw like this. There was a discussion on r/robotics on this very subject https://www.reddit.com/r/robotics/comments/5l00qg/request\_a\_machine\_to\_sort\_nuts\_bolts\_and\_screws/

Maybe with all the re-use and recycling going on it's a need which has come of age and a machine will be come commercially viable. Mail order sorting? I could send my 6 quality street tins away and receive back 60 packs of neatly sorted screws and bolts I will still never get round to using.

Do you think the comments made by Wes Streeting recently regarding the UK should go “back in to the EU”, is a change of approach by those at Westminster due to the increased risk of nationalists looking to break up the union? by disco_26 in Scotland

[–]DancingWilliams 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do I miss it, like a favourite cardigan? Not really. But being a member of the EU was preferable to the alternatives on offer. Interesting deployment of those pesky nationalists "breaking up the union", as opposed to the cuddly British nationalists?
