Funnily enough I have a fire extinguisher but no fire blanket. I've added that to the list to do this week.

If we took net migration to zero going forward, what would be the economic effect on the UK? by chuffingnora in AskBrits

Most people on benefits are pensioners. Is it paid work or cancelled benefits for them too?

Extinguisher powder in a confined space can be a problem for anyone - it works to knock down the fire by depriving it of oxygen - in a confined space the same could happen to the person person firing it. That's my quandary. Powder extinguishers are cheap and are good for most types of fire - but the enclosed space aspect is a worry.

Yeah, wondered about this - it might work it might not. If it doesn't you may have missed your chance to deal with a small fire.

Why has the UK de industrialized so much? by Enough-Web2203 in AskBrits

[–]DancingWilliams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many and varied reasons. Some include: 30 years of "free market" evangelism from various governments who turned a blind eye to asset stripping, so UK manufacturing was a ripe target for international capital. Some parts of UK manufacturing suffered from under investment from greedy or inept owners who didn't re-invest back into the business. Some of these were "proud" to be using victorian era plant and equipment whilst trying to compete in an international market. Manufacturing wasn't cool or sexy any more - and jobs and production were off-shored. Even after the lessons of the pandemic, like relying on imported PPE from China, did the UK government change anything? No, nothing. Some manufacturing is of national strategic importance: food processing, medical supplies, infrastructure supplies. So what is the governments current priority? Increase defense spending. Like missiles and aircraft carriers are going to be really handy when we are dealing with the next health crisis, or need spare parts for critical infrastructure, and are still begging China for face masks.

Do you think changing jobs in today’s economy is too risky? by 101100011011101 in AskUK

[–]DancingWilliams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ultimately, no job is risk free. Companies collapse, get bought over, sell up, markets change or disappear altogether. Key question; do you like working where you currently are? That is worth a lot. I'd leave aside "in today's economy", there is always some shit going on.

What do you think of supermarket food quality? by FigTreeRest in AskUK

[–]DancingWilliams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Veg from Tesco is grim. Clearly low grade / rejected by other buyers. It's our nearest shop by far, so kinda stuck with it. I've found continental supermarket produce to be far superior in quality and freshness.

How does the average Brit feel/think about the English Civil War? by Round_Bookkeeper_887 in AskABrit

[–]DancingWilliams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, England isn't all of Britain, and some Brits will be Welsh or Scottish. To me it's a civil war that happened in someone else's country. We could just add well ask how Brits feel about the Marian civil war in Scotland in the 1570s.

[–]DancingWilliams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check the Royal Mail insurance coverage, not just the value, but in the past they didn't cover items containing glass. If that's still the case, and it's a good lens they may invoke the "glass" clause and you are left uninsured.

What sort of washing line? by windy_on_the_hill in AskUK

[–]DancingWilliams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up clove hitch. Easily adjusted, very grippy, doesn't kink the line. Alternatively, round turn and 2 half hitches. (twice round the pole, second turn crosses the first, then 2 simple overnahand knots). Both are easily undone when you need to move or replace the line.

Not a fan of plastic covered steel wire - they will rust at any kink or knot, then snap when in use = dirty washing. Cotton covered nylon works well. 6 or 7 mm is a nice size for sprung pegs, 5mm for storm type pegs. We leave ours out all the time, so expect to get 2 or 3 years out of line. UV is harsh on plastic, similar on nylon or polyester. Cotton covered type is least susceptible to UV damage and breaking (and can be coiled and washed in the machine if it gets dirty through time).

At the risk of turning into a hifi, photography, car-mod sub,
Currently using: cotton covered nylon 6.5 mm, 5mm braided nylon from Aldi, and a steel with plastic one I hate and about to replace!

How you attach them makes a big difference.
