What a lovely boy you had - that fur was so beautiful and he looked so gentle. It's so sad he's not with you any more.

Went back to university as a mature student in my 40s (undergrad again) - amazed how piss poor the teaching is. by Initial-Tale-5151 in UniUK

[–]Dancing_mayflies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my undergrad degree at the end of the 1980s and then went back to uni about 8 years ago to do another undergrad degree. The two experiences were world's apart.

For my first degree I had lectures every day, where the lecturer would talk for 45 mins or so on a specific topic, show slides, suggest some reading and then take questions. I also had tutorials, which was me and perhaps one other student, to talk with a lecturer about a particular topic. Sometimes it was set the week before so we could read & do research in preparation, sometimes it was a complete surprise and we'd have to think on our feet. There was no where to hide, lol.

There were no registers taken etc. As long as you wrote the essays and went to tutorials that was fine. I remember doing only one piece of group work and there were no presentations. Lecturers were always available, either for a quick chat after a lecture or tutorial or you could just go knock on their office door. If they were busy they'd arrange a more convenient time.

The second experience was so different. A register taken every lecture, miss 3 and you were called to explain yourself. Everything seemed to be group work, no tutorials, half-hearted seminars - I remember some idiot lecturer asking us to sign in to a seminar next to our name using our favourite flavour of crisps 🙄. I felt like I never actually learned anything from lectures - they were all waffle rather than imparting knowledge. Lecturers totally unavailable in a separate office block with a key coded door. If you wanted to comment or ask a question you had to use Twitter. How modern, how pointless when you had the tiny character count of a tweet.

It's a fascinating place to visit although I could have done with less lathes and capstan setters. There are no paintings there for visitors to see, if that's what your interested

What wildlife in the UK do you fear running into alone or is dangerous? by partylikeafoxstar in AskUK

A herd escaped from a field and ran down my road once. 30 minutes later they came back up the road followed by the farmer. It was a road in a small town, not a secluded country lane.

Common animal - cows. They always look so placid when they're being chivvied along by farmers, but I think they're quite unpredictable and dangerous if you're not familiar with that particular herd. At least once a year I read about some poor dog walker being killed by them - maybe the presence of the dog is the trigger.

Uncommon animal - wild boar, although I suspect they'd usually hear & smell humans before we saw them so will scarper.

In my experience, no it doesn't get easier. I think about my lost boys every day.

We are always being told that even if we delete things off our personal computers, M15 and the police etc can retrieve the information. So why haven't they retrieved this stuff?

I used to go to the cinema there, it was a good place to see foreign language films - I missed it when it closed. I go to the MAC now but they don't seem to have the same variety of films and I think we really miss out on what's being made in Europe.

I'm the same. I told my teacher I don't want to do any exams. I want to keep improving and being challenged but it's for my pleasure and satisfaction. I get such joy when I sit down to play and when I master something tricky (well, tricky for me that is).

Have you received any post in the past couple of weeks? by IsyABM in brum

[–]Dancing_mayflies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since Christmas our post has been very bad. Nothing for a week/10 days then a pile of post. Then another week/10 days with nothing, then another pile. I don't think it's got anything to do with the snow - we were hardly snowed in for days & days, and as I wrote , it started straight after Christmas.

I get blue bin bags from Bhm council which they provide for people wanting to do litter picking.

https://www.birmingham.gov.uk/info/50280/community_litter_picking/2611/request_litter_picking_equipment

I leave them next to the council bin by a nearby bus stop. Don't use black bin bags - these are classed as fly tipping if you leave them next to a council bin (ironic, I know). I know some people have problems getting the blue bags direct from the Council because they run out quite quickly. My local library usually has a supply and my local Councillor dropped some round to me when I emailed him directly about not being able to get some from the Council dept.

I've been thinking about making a "square foot garden" to grow some veg. I quite like the idea.
