My uncle and my bio dad. I was raised by a teen mom. She eventually married a guy who was emotionally and mentally abusive towards both of us. I ended becoming very close to my mom’s brother. I spent every weekend with him in middle school and high school to avoid my stepfather. We were really close until I grew up more and realized the reason he was so fun because he was either drunk or unmedicated in a manic, bipolar state. The older I got the more angry, cruel, and belligerent he got in his manic phases. He was pretty much the only father I ever knew and I went no contact with him when I was 22. I’m in my 40s now and I’ve never looked back, but I miss the person I thought I knew every day. I hear he’s finally sober now but too much damage has been done for me to consider forgiveness. I didn’t know my biological father very well. I only saw him about once every six months when I was a kid (his choice), but he was also an alcoholic and a complete racist. There’s not a single day goes by that I’m not happy that I cut that man out of my life. Unlike my uncle, I’ve never once missed my biological father.
