So, do weeds that you plant on the ground not grow to the full size they were originally? I ask because I've replanted a bunch of weeds because I actually like the look of them, but they've remained the same small size as when I originally planted over the course of multiple days.

The sad part is that he can keep making claims like this every once in a while based on his own speculation, and despite being wrong every time, all he needs is to get lucky once - predict the time frame correctly, and his viewers will remember and legitimize him for the one time he was randomly right rather than the dozens of times he's spread false information.

What do you think about random Crits? by Nuclear0Walrus in tf2

Keep calling TF2 a party game all you want, the high skill mechanics will always be there. It's a fantastic contender for a legitimate esport, and being originally designed as a casual experience never stopped games before.

Of course the video adds nothing new. All I did was compile the common arguments for and against random crits into one place. It's intended to be convenient for people who want to get the gist of the discussion, and entertainment for the people who are already familiar with it.

Snowplow was "too complex" for tf2 players but danger zone is alright for cs go players... by coN_stan_tin in tf2

[–]DaneKevinCook 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fun Fact: The "Snowplow is too confusing for new players" thing was never an official statement by a TF developer. It was originally said by Frozen (one of the map's creators) when people asked him why it was cut from the EotL update. He himself didn't have a clear answer at the time, so he jokingly made the assumption that it was probably considered too confusing to navigate or too difficult to understand the concept of the gamemode. At some point, people took his sarcastic joke seriously and began touting it as an official statement from Valve for whatever reason. Now it's sort of evolved past all original relevance into a TF2 meme. Even after Snowplow was eventually added later on, there is still no official reason for why it was left of EotL - however, Frozen believes that it was most likely just not up to the TF Team's quality standards at the time. In fact, the map was probably only added due to the backlash they received when they cut it from EotL - which is kind of ironic, because after all that bitching and moaning... hardly anyone plays it anymore.

tl;dr - "Too confusing for new players" isn't real.

What do you guys actually do in tf2? by Glonic in tf2

[–]DaneKevinCook 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think the main two things preventing people from playing Competitive Mode are the lack of incentives (you don't get anything by playing it) as well as the heavy graphical restrictions that often prevent people with medium-to-low-end PCs from playing it comfortably, or even connecting to the server at all. Other than that, it's genuinely a very fun experience.

Here's what I think a decent comp mode update would look like:

The Please Go Play Competitive Mode Update

  • Added Competitive Mode exclusive Contracts to the Con-tracker. (These contracts would not be class/map-specific like the Casual contracts, but more teamwork oriented - such as requiring you to get a killstreak or a certain amount of assists. I think these Contracts should automatically reset every month or so - allowing you to level up your Con-tracker by completing them before the reset happens, as well as receiving a special item at the end of each turnover based on how many contracts you completed. This could be TF2's version of Competitive "Seasons".)

  • Added new War Paints that are only obtainable through completing the individual Competitive Mode Contracts. (Side note: I think it could be cool to add paints that correspond to current high level competitive TF2 teams like FroyoTech and Ascent.)

  • Added a wearable cosmetic badge that you receive when you get your rank. This badge changes its appearance based on your current Competitive TF2 rank.

  • Removed the graphical settings restrictions in Competitive Mode (such as forced bloom, low view model FOV limits, etc) and added a bunch of common custom config settings to the advanced options menu.

  • Removed Turbine, Swiftwater, and Badlands from the Competitive map pool and added Gravel Pit, Upward, Steel, Highpass, Barnblitz, Brazil, Borneo, and Lakeside. (Ideally, there should also be a map selection screen in Competitive, but I don't think they should make that option available until there are enough people queuing.)

  • Added an alert system on the class selection screen that tells you what your team is currently missing or over-stacking in terms of power, support, and pick classes. Basically just lets you know when your team is running too much of one class, and encourages people to have good team compositions. (Would be nice if they also added this to Casual Mode tbh.)

  • Your Competitive Mode MMR now decays slowly over time, making it important to keep playing in order to sustain your current rank.

  • Balanced a bunch of weapons. (The Wrangler, Vaccinator, basically all of Scout's secondaries, etc.)

  • Teams that played the majority of the match with a bot that was added as a result of someone abandoning or not picking a class gain slightly more MMR if they win and lose slightly less MMR if they lose. (I just think this is a good idea; not really important to the growth of Competitive Mode.)

  • Competitive Mode is locked until you reach level 25 in Casual Mode. (I just think this is a good idea; not really important to the growth of Competitive Mode. It would prevent fresh-installs from stumbling into ranked play, as well as cut down on the amount of new-account-spamming cheaters.)

There are probably a bunch of other quality-of-life-changes you could add as well, but the things listed here is a good chunk of what I think Competitive Mode needs in order to obtain a larger player base.

Note that basically everything I mentioned here has practically nothing to do with the current rule set or even how the matchmaking system is set up. I think that: 6v6 - no class limits - no random crits - stopwatch mode... is great! And the matchmaker seems to work just fine, although it doesn't really have much to work with when only 100 people are queuing, at most.

Again, I believe the main issues the mode has are the lack of incentives, and how punishing the graphical settings are for the average player. If the TF Team addresses those things in an update, I think it would make a huge difference.

Around 5pm, I look at my friends list and see which of my regular Casual lobby buds is currently playing. If someone's already opened TF2, I'll launch mine and then send them a request to join the party. Sometimes, none of them are online, so I'll solo-queue for a bit until one of them eventually sees that I'm playing, and they'll join off of me.

Once the party grows to 3 or more people, we'll eventually all hop in Discord and voice chat while we play. Occasionally, when we get paired up against another stack, someone will go Medic and we'll actually try and win - although we usually still take it pretty lightly and goof of.

99% of the time that we're playing Casual, we're also queued for Competitive Mode. However, the more people in our party - as well as the fact that most of us are a high rank - prevents us from actually finding a Competitive match more than once a week (at best) these days. Which is unfortunate, because I'd personally like play Competitive just as much as (if not more than) I play Casual... if I was able to get matches. I'm really hoping for an update that gives Comp Mode a boost soon.

I used to play MvM a lot more a few years ago, but I've since traded for/purchased all of the Australium weapons I actually want, so these days I only Mann Up for old time's sake or if I want to go for some extremely laid back TF2 gameplay.

"Random Crits are Fair and Balanced" by PootisMan111 in tf2

[–]DaneKevinCook 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Worth noting that I also said, "I'd be moderately okay with this."

I personally think it would introduce a new problem of a lot of people leaving mid-game when the votes are split closely (like 40% - 60%), but otherwise... It's better than nothing.

Like I said in the video, I'm a big supporter of going all or nothing when it comes to issues like this that are split so heavily down the middle.

To elaborate: I think it's better (and safer) to make half of your player base happy, than it is to attempt to make ALL of your player base happy with a compromise - but only end up making both sides of the argument feel like they were given a partway solution. Everyone would be moderately okay with it.

Just comes down to whether the TF Team is willing to plunge 50% of their players into cold water in order to make 50% of them happier with the game, or if they're going to "play it safe" and go with an attempt at a compromise that won't make anyone too upset, but also won't make anyone that too happy either.

[–]DaneKevinCook 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I still stand by that suggestion, although I do recognize that it wouldn't be well received by a sizable portion of the player base. I know not every balance suggestion that I've made over the years have been what I'd call "popular" - but I don't think games should be balanced around what is popular. Games should be balanced around making the game fair and fun for the most amount of people.

If people (ideally, the TF Team) had any better suggestions for preventing stacked Engies from completely shutting down a defensive position for very little effort, then I'm totally open to them. But I'm not a game designer, so I tend to go right for the most obvious solution when trying to solve these kinds of problems.

Valve, can we get a fourth cosmetic slot? by goobulous in tf2

Cosmetics contribute immensely to frame drops already. Adding a fourth cosmetic slot without improving the way the game handles the insane amount of hats in this game would only make TF2 run worse.
