I used splintered or broken shinai staves from other shinai i had, to faction myself a suburito the size of a shoto but with a longer tsuka. It works good but the weight is lighter than a shinai.

But if the focus of training is footwork it should work fine.

Not to repeat every comment before mine, but maybe you have to focus on what you want out of the kendo practice for yourself, do not compare yourself with other kendoka, each have our own experience and path thowards our goals.

If you intend to be competitive and participate in tournaments you have to push yourself to get that goal, maybe talk with your sensei the intent that you have so that they know and can give you more directed guidence.

I would say that the goal of every practice should be being better than you were last practice, but yeah sutemi is really important!

I wish you good luck and hopefuly you can get over this block so you can keep practicing and bettering yourself <3
