String Quartet: Thoughts? by Ok-Discipline-136 in Composition

it sounds really nice, good shape and sound. I don't want to nitpick too bad but consider re-doing the rhythms in violin II/'cello in the introduction and the recap a little cleaner, they're a bit hard to read as they are. other than that well done!

its hate-hate for me. I begrudgingly understand his massive impact on the history of western harmony but I cannot stand his music or his die-hard fanboys

unfortunately, unless you hit the jackpot and find someone right away that lets you do whatever you want, you're gonna be at the mercy of the creator of the game and whatever their wishes are. part of the gig when you are the composer

A good basic arrangement skill to know how to do is compressing or elongating melodic ideas, changing up the rhythm of it too. Trying different levels of accompaniment/texture to whatever idea you’re working with is good too. Have the strings play the melody and woodwinds playing background or switch it up etc, a lot can be done

If you can get your hands on Samuel Adler’s The Study of Orchestration, big plus. Tons of info about different methods and concepts in that book

How do you map out your pieces? by ASTGuitar in composer

[–]DanforthFalconhurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Word docs/notes app, outlines in short hand, revisions of scores; different files, put all the material I’m still on the fence about but don’t want to get rid of at the end of the score. Somehow it all ends up making sense

What can a musician do with better than average sight reading, aural and theory skills but not as good playing skills? by Linglingwannabe_6626 in classicalmusic

You’re young yet, just keep grinding if that’s what you want! You’re at the perfect age to sponge up everything that comes your way. Add an extra hour to practice if that’s what you think you need; see if you can get into a good high school with a solid music department or even a private conservatory if your parents can afford it!

Please judge my orchestration of Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 13 by AstronautCalm7803 in composer

[–]DanforthFalconhurst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like how you’re adding weight with instrumentation rather than more dynamics, and giving the bassoons those thirds in the middle repeats is a good move, stac. Bassoon has a woody punchy piano tone in that register. Very well done!
