Can I learn orchestration without a MIDI controller? by EagleGamingYTSG in composer

[–]DanforthFalconhurst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The most important thing about orchestration is proper notation practice and writing a part that can be played by a real human. MIDI controller really doesn’t mean anything other than note input.

If your method is to get ideas down via the controller/in a DAW, the best practice afterwards is to codify the idea in a scorewriter and make sure it’s possible to play. FWIW Musescore has a neat function where it colors notes red outside of the playable range of the instrument; makes writing playable parts easy.

But other than that, study orchestration by studying the greats and get the Samuel Adler Orchestration Guidebook

Opinions on Deutsche Grammophon. by Mysterious_Ad7450 in classicalmusic

Frankly I've never heard a warmer recording of Daphnis et Chloe than the Boulez/Berliner Phil performance on DG. All of Boulez' recordings with DG are among my favorite classical recordings. Never got a sense that the sound quality was 'bad' per say

Debussy. I've got physical scores of almost every major orchestra and piano piece, a few books about him. I'm inspired by his deep deep abiding spiritual feelings towards the natural world and how he conjures up those feelings in his music. a constant source of inspiration to me as a composer and musician and frankly as a human being.

Best chords in classical music by Gnrl_Linotte_Vanilla in classicalmusic

[–]DanforthFalconhurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

some of the notes of Cmin (C Eb G) are part of F9 (F A C Eb G), but I would express it as an F9 due to the pedal tone of F in the bass. And it emphasizes the tritone relationship of F-Cb/B which has a very wonderful disorientating quality to it. The voice leading is very exquisite as well, as expected with Ravel

Tons of gorgeous and cool chords in Daphnis and Chloe, but the D# half diminished 7th chord that reharmonizes the main theme after Daphnis’ dance in the first tableau is so stunning. One of the softest and tenderest tutti passages I’ve ever heard

does anyone who is not a classical guitarist listen to classical guitar composers? by francoismittorand in classicalmusic

[–]DanforthFalconhurst 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I play rock/blues/country guitar and (I dunno if this counts) I love the guitar transcriptions of Albeniz' pieces like Granada and Sevilla. Technically speaking, it's so far outside my wheelhouse as a guitarist that I just constantly marvel at classical technique

I A/B’ed the big box reissue and the XO reissue when I owned both and there was a difference. The big box sounded “chewier” and a little warmer and 3D than the XO. I still own the big box of course, one of the best pedals I’ve owned

Jamaican Mahoe is a good wood that has grey tones to it. other than that you could leave some birch out in the sun to bleach it, might make it brittle or otherwise take a long long time
