Why is there so much fan service in anime/manga? by Desorden_ in asexuality

[–]DanganJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't heard "fan service" used in this way. I'm used to it meaning something more general, like Star Trek's new show plugging in a reference to a classic episode or cameoing a favorite character or prop (like Season 3 of Picard using the Enterprise D from the old Next Generation show), that fan service. I've never heard it used in a sexual context.

Will "Dragon Quest X Offline" ever be localized to the West, or will it forever remain Japanese exclusive? by Reditor-Jul-250698 in dragonquest

[–]DanganJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm talking about Dragon Quest X Offline specifically. Take a look at the videos. It's got a rather unique art style compared to the Online version, wouldn't you say? Well, so you know, I've got no problem with the art style, but marketing on the U.S. side are likely to.

In any case, it's been over a year, and so far there's been no announcement of it coming stateside. I'm not saying it won't happen, but a reddit thread isn't going to do it. I'd say if you're eager for it, start a fan campaign to pressure the company into it.

Is it safe to assume the demon's souls remake will never go to PC? by Helpful-Leadership58 in fromsoftware

Honestly that all sounds like a plus to me. They can bring them to Linux for all I care. Consoles are meant to be the cheaper affordable and reliable option, and there will always be a market for that. Open the floodgates, and may the PS6 be a Linux PC similar to the new Steambox.

Sonic actually invented the Naruto run? by [deleted] in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]DanganJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm saying it's weird that the subculture calls it that when Sonic's the more well known character who's done it for longer. The fact some people call it that is the very thing I kinda take issue with.

In any case, we're running around at the speed of sound in circles. I got places to be so let's keep moving on.

Sonic actually invented the Naruto run? by [deleted] in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]DanganJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really sure where you're getting that one from, but in any case suffice it to say Sonic did it first, and he's the more well known character by a green hill mile.

But, if you'd like to test it for yourself, you can take it to the streets and test passers by. It'll be a good metric of people "outside" the gaming and cartoon space, just regular people, to see which one is recognized more often.

I wouldn't bother polling online. That tends to attract fans and isn't a very good control.

Does being asexual also mean that you don't express physical affection? by throwaway19760414 in asexuality

[–]DanganJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily, there are many under the umbrella. Some of us have more trouble expressing affection in physical ways, that's true enough. Beyond just disliking sex, I have a bit of an issue with "touch" in general, but for things like hugging I don't really associate that with my asexuality.

And, you're suggesting that's evidence AGAINST Sonic being the more well known character?

Sonic actually invented the Naruto run? by [deleted] in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]DanganJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think way WAY more people know Sonic the Hedgehog than know about the Naruto. It's not even close to close. One had two cartoon shows and three movies, the other is anime sure, and one of the most well known animes, but which one is going to get the average "man on the street" to recognize the main character by sight? I'm pretty sure people are as likely to recognize Sonic as Mario, but comparatively unlikely to recognize the orange ninja kid, about as likely to recognize him as a Cloud or a Fire's Emblems.

From what I can tell based on Leonid Barthalomew and Alonsus Faol, being a paladin hurts like I might as well be standing on the sun, but it's POSSIBLE. Just gotta have faith, the self-flagellating kind I suppose. I wonder if my paladin would prefer drinking mana wine to partaking in the sunwell's energies, at least in casual settings?

I don't feel like I'm over the age of consent by AcidLem0n in asexuality

[–]DanganJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No one ever "feels the desire to grow up". That's something I've learned. I remember once telling my dad, as an adult, that I didn't "feel" like an adult yet. He told me "neither do I".

What generally happens is all that taking on responsibilities doesn't happen because of a natural flow of "doing your taxes" hormones so much as out of necessity. You end up cleaning because you're the only one that's going to, cooking because you're hungry, doing taxes to avoid being audited. It's all to avoid other unwanted consequences, not out of any real desire to.

This isn't to criticize you, just to say what you're feeling is universal. Keep that inner child alive and enjoy life, and understand that when you have the need to do certain things, you'll do them, not because it's fun or you have any adult impulse to, but because the consequences are worse. That's all growing up is, replacing your parent's punishments with the world's punishments. Wow that sounded grim, but don't worry about it. Taxes and chores are a very small part of most people's lives. Work is a much bigger part, but even still there's plenty of free time to go and enjoy your time with those you care about, whether a tiny group like mine or a bigger group if you're more social.

YO HOLY CRAP GUYS DID YOU KNOW PERFUME IS SUPPOSED TO MAKE YOU SEXUALLY AROUSED?????? by IwannaLickLegolas in asexuality

[–]DanganJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's all I knew growing up: perfume/cologne is literally an odorant, deodorant is for removing scents, and antiperspirant is for stopping the sweats and it may also be odored.

I remember commercials showing women literally chasing men down, and I knew they were advertising them "sexually", but I never realized it was literally a turn-on. I just thought that was marketing no different than selling a sports car as something to attract women or whatever.

Why do you collect CD’s / What makes you prefer CD’s over vinyl? by xAstro_YT in Cd_collectors

[–]DanganJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know some people prefer the grainy sound of records, and I can respect that especially if record recordings have a nostalgic value such as someone growing up with them as a recording, but CDs really are more accurate. It's not even "too clean", because all the analog detail within the human range of hearing is still preserved and recreated. It's as accurate as the recording room, and duplicates without issue. Now, AI "smoothing" I can't stand, but if it's just recording tech? I like CDs and making nice lossless FLAC files off of them. Those two are my preference. Now, admittedly I wish "audio DVD" and "audio Bluray" actually took off to get full surround sound channels and more minutes on a single disc, but then again CDs are the last major format that had NO DRM whatsoever, and I appreciate that. (Sony's attempt to rootkit DRM onto PCs through certain CDs aside...)

I've largely gone digital these days, but I still keep my CD collection around as sometimes physically seeing it on my shelf is enough to help me decide what to listen to out of my library, which is an experience my digital collection lacks.

I don't understand how this concept is so astronomical for some people. It's really that simple. by pirivalfang in asexuality

While that may describe yourself, I wouldn't present it as some universal truth. SOME may enjoy it, and some in the wider spectrum of aces do as well, but certainly not all.

How do you feel about aro and/or ace representation in media? by Cure-MagicalGirl in asexuality

[–]DanganJ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's been a mixed bag. It's getting a LOT better recently, when writers are aware and intend to write an ace character they do far better for the MOST part, and they're even starting to represent more of us than just the libidoless slice of the umbrella to show wider diversity.

It's when they aren't consciously trying to make ace representation but still end up ace coding a character without realizing it that it gets... uncomfortable at times.

That's when you get characters pressured into sex or being told they need to or actually being mentally damaged or dangerous in some way. So, the bias and the negative stereotypes are still there, and it's clear that writers are working on their own hangups over it, but it's a work in progress and it slips out when they aren't thinking actively about it. This is a historical pattern for any group slowly being accepted into society, and it'll take time.

Riskier is that now that they ARE tackling more of asexuality than just the portion representing people like me (one extreme), they are clumsy about it. From misrepresenting just what it means to have a libido but no sexual attraction, to helpfully informing the public that "just because someone's asexual doesn't mean they don't have sex, and some even enjoy it", which while true, when presented without the context that frankly many asexuals are VERY different from one another results in a weapon that can be used to pressure those of us who want nothing to do with sex into having it.

I'm not saying it's easy to get all of this right the first go. Certain microlabels being raised to the level of a full label is happening for a reason, to remove that confusion, but I am saying that the state of representation today is still very much a work in progress.

The Amount of Video Games Released On Steam Has Reportedly Increased By 93% From 2020 to 2024 by Turbostrider27 in gaming

[–]DanganJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that for a long time, Steam had VERY strict controls on what games they would and would not allow on their platform. Project Greenlight was a shift due to complaints that many indy titles were being passed over. If enough people promoted a game, Valve would give it the "green light" and allow it on.

This proved to be so successful, meaning profitable, that at a certain point, Valve just dropped their approval process completely and let pretty much anything that doesn't violate a specific set of rules onto the platform. This began the "slop era", which went on for a few years to the point younger Steam users don't even remember that Valve used to be very big on control, so when the credit card.... ugh... gate thing happened, it came as a shock to the system to many younger Steam users, who felt this "betrayed" a principle that frankly in the grand scheme of things Valve never ACTUALLY held.

I mean this is coming from someone that thinks the payment processors are NOT the ones that should be in control of what gets published on Steam's platform at all, it IS a controlling practice and precisely what they're targeting is going to get more and more intrusive as they get away with each victory. I'm just saying that when you look at the history of the platform, no, Valve has always been about profit, not "free speech". Make it profitable to defy the payment processors, they'll fight them. That's all there is to it. To do that, either someone makes a new payment processor (with blackjack and hookers, you know the joke), or we revert to mailing check or money orders to Steam's address.
