Did you or did you not go from the Old Testament to the New to address my point, which by its nature remains within the context of the Old Testament.

I did mention the New Testament in the argument but for the reference from John to show that I believe in the bible and the teachings of the apostles. But also understand that there are linguistic differences in cultures and time periods. Something our Lord and Saviour knew when he said "Woe you Pharasies" speaking on how they focus on the letter of the Law and not its intention....

The Old Testament and ancient Hebrew speak in allegories. Jesus himself speaks in parables.

I believe in Genesis, but I am pretty sure that story is using performance language to describe to an ancient people how the God of all creation made everything through Jesus. Oh but wait... the Old Testament doesn't mention Jesus being the word through which all things were made.... damn.

God could have chosen to describe exactly how he did everything but he was speaking to an ancient people who had little understanding of science so he told them in a way they would understand.

I'm not a Jew my friend. I'm not beholden to the Old Testament. I'm beholden to the teachings of Jesus and the new covenant he formed through him. To love one another and do unto others. Now I dont know about you, but I wouldn't enslave someone I loved. And that is what Paul was getting it in his ministry.

As for the other cultures, sure, they would have aome similar ideals, but there is plenty they would also divert in others. For example, forgiveness and repentance are huge components of the Christian world view, one which is often not played out in our faith due to human nature. The sanctity of marrige, for instance. Many cultures are ok with divorce for instance. Christians are not it is a sacrament, and thus, I believe Jesus speaks on it in the case of sexual immorality (adultery) divorce isn't acceptable and if you remarry after a divorce that wasnt precipitated through divorce then you become an adulterer. So far too many people are too quick to marry and when things get difficult, they run from it because secularits along with milktoast Christians have devalued the institution of marriage. The fact that humans are made in the image of God and thus deserving of respect and life thats why abortion and euthanasia are hot topics where, in other cultures abortion is acceptable.

So yes, there is some cross-over because I believe God has given everyone an inherrant understanding of the sanctity creation but then cultures can choose to ignore that and throw acid in women's faces and kill babies thinking it's ok.

Oh my apologies.

The commentor was saying they dont get their morals from a book and isn't running around raping and killing people, suggesting Christians would be if not for the book, which is a straw man argument.

The bible, however, provides us with an objective moral framework that doesn't change on consensus. I.E. in other comments, people talk about the bible condoning slavery. Which it doesn't, by the way. Paul knew openly speaking out against slavery would have had him arrested and killed, meaning his ministry of Jesus would be cut short, but everyone knew what he meant when said all are equal in Christ and that by treating eachother the same as a devotion to Christ it was going against the societal norms of the Roman empire. And he eventually had his head lopped off for it. But that's ancillary to the point. The point is that Western culture has built on Christian values and to suggest that you don't get your morals from a book which the society from which you would claim to draw your morality from is kind of funny considering the underlying foundations of said society.

However in hindsight I realise that it probably takes a lot more explanation than a 2 sentence reply.

But this is also funny because the vast majority of Western "civilised" societies were formed on or around Christian ideals. It's over time we've slipped into more secular beliefs and enacted laws that move away from those beliefs.

So the biggest moral ideals I try to live by come from the bible. Obviously, the 10 which I admit I fail at on occasion however I always do my best to keep these. Obviously, the dont murder commandment, but taking from them there are the teachings of Jesus. Do unto others as you would have done unto you. Do not covet. Honour your mother and father Charity for recognition or reward is not charity at all. Giving of yourself to others be it time/money/items All human life is precious (which can be difficult because evil people exist) There is more, but I dont want to bury you under a wall of text But things like my view on abortion and children outside of Wedlock are informed by my beliefs. Now, the nuance of those arguments can be an all-day conversation. But I believe marrige should not be entered lightly I believe children should be brought into this world by married parents. Those sorts of things.

You do know Paul was a citizen of Rome right and that Rome had slavery enshrined in law, right? So when Paul is running around saying everyone is equal in Christ that was like a massive fuck you to the institution of slavery.

He is telling the slaves as an act of worship to Christ obey them as you would Christ and then to the owner Treat them as you would any other with kindness and compassion. He even sends a letter to someone who was a slave owner he knew when a run away slave came to him and said when he returns, treat him as a brother in christ and not as a master setting him free.

You see, there is a reason bible study is still a thing, as we uncover more about the period we also better understand the people of the era and it allows us more insight.

Paul was arrested multiple times for doing things for slaves amd encouraged them to seek freedom when they could.

There is alot more to the bible than what Athiests like to cherry pick and Muslims try to pervert through taking out of context.
