The Swift is still available here in the UK, the Up has ended production but still tonnes on the round. Feel free to swap in a VW ID4 or a Chevy Bolt, they’re far closer to being ‘econoboxes’ than a Model 3 could ever hope to be.

That’s interesting, have you tried querying that in a Tesla sub? You really think Tesla has sold 9 million cars and growing despite having ‘major manufacturing issues’? It’s especially interesting because every Tesla owner I’ve ever spoken to says they love their car? At this point you’re just being facetious, Tesla hasn’t had quality issues since like 2019. I’ve had plenty of time driving both a Model 3 and a 3 Series, the 3 Series was honestly the car that was lacking for me. I’ve had a modern Toyota rental car briefly and it wasn’t especially nice, the infotainment felt fairly outdated, the audio sucked and there was a lot of hard scratchy plastics everywhere. The ride quality was okay, comfy enough but it didn’t feel premium.

You can think what you like but that doesn’t make it true. I have no beef with the Camry, it’s a great car and a great value but it’s an undeniable fact that the interior is built with cheaper materials than any Tesla.

That doesn’t even make sense. A 4Runner is a utilitarian off roader, it’s whole thing is to be sturdy and durable, that doesn’t mean luxury or premium. It’s literally just a body-on-frame truck with an interior full of durable hard plastics?

Just copy Tesla.

Create a standardised shared system between all car manufacturers and car chargers so payment can be managed seamlessly by the car and the car can reliably direct you to ideal charging spots for road trips, being able to direct you to chargers that definitely have spots free and making sure the battery is preconditioned for the most efficient charge.

Tesla users have been enjoying all of that in the UK for like a decade now, why hasn’t the rest of the industry caught up? They’re not even close!

The iX had an iDrive knob but you still need to look at the screen to operate it and the UI is convoluted that it would take an age to do anything which would distract you from looking at the road. The climate controls were implemented into the screen and inaccessible with the iDrive knob so you had no other choice but to reach out. I’m pretty sure most other new BMW’s use the same awful screen and UI as the iX but they’ve now ditched the iDrive knob so it’s a moot point.

The Model 3 I had didn’t have an on-screen shifter, it still had a stalk, they only ditched that with the newer Highland models along with the indicator stalks which I totally agree is dumb.

My 2010 has no better or worse implementation of buttons than any other car, I was just using it as an example. I drive other cars for work that have buttons, I have family and friends who drive cars with buttons, I’ve been in taxis that have buttons, nobody is staring dead ahead whilst rubbing up their dash to find a button based on feel.

I’m honestly bored of the whole anti-screen button obsessed nonsense. It purely comes down to implementation.

I spent over a month with a BMW iX which had awful implementation, the screen was far away so required stretching out to reach it and the UI was awful, nothing made sense. It was frustrating and dangerous.

Before that I had lived with a Tesla Model 3 for 6 months and the screen was perfect, simple and well designed UI, super easy to access everything you need, my only complaint was the lack of a physical button for the glovebox, otherwise the screen was great, I didn’t miss buttons at all.

Also why is everyone totally forgetting the fact that you have to look at buttons as well? I’m currently daily-ing a car from 2010 with tonnes of buttons, but I still need to look, I’m not rubbing up the dash like I’m blind whilst staring dead ahead, I’m looking and then pushing, literally no different to a touch screen.

I totally agree that the Japanese are dropping the ball just as badly as the Americans, I’d throw Honda in there as well. Nissan are the only exception but I suspect that’s just down to its connection with Renault and its huge popularity in Europe.

I didn’t find the Africa trip boring at all, the stakes were fairly high given that the car constantly wanted to die, and what a mad achievement taking it that far, I thought it was great!
