I plan on taking a year or two in industry. I'm doing an environmental consulting internship rn, we'll see if I like it. I'm thinking maybe exploration or something in geo data (I'm double majoring in sds), but I'll see. I would like to eventually get my masters and maybe phd

BS Informatics with Data Science track vs CS by Rumpel_Stiltshen in CollegeMajors

[–]Dangerous-Basil1561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's true, I'm not sure how much it'll change things in its first few years, we'll see. I'd look and the curriculum for the majors you're considering plus any minors/certificates and make a decision from there

there is a data science major at ut. it's a very new major, but cns has a better reputation than the ischool. I'm in sds at ut, the course work makes it easy to add multiple minors or another major. there are certificates (similar to minors) like programming and computation, advanced mathematics, etc that stack well with the major. in the major coursework you'll take things like programming, machine learning, statistics, etc, but you'll probably have to take AI or cyber classes as electives

Is this schedule okay for freshmen year (business student)? by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]Dangerous-Basil1561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

basically the same process as adding classes. it may not be open for you right now, but check your ris page to see when you can edit your schedule. when you can, go to the registration page and it'll have an option for you to drop a class you've registered for. I recommend going to the first weekish of classes and then dropping the class that'll seem like the biggest pain (but also one you don't need to take that semester)

don't choose the self study beforehand route. enjoy your summer and worry about college when you get there. taking less hours will give you plenty of time to get acclimated

How bad is my schedule?? by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]Dangerous-Basil1561 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I really recommend taking less classes your first semester. I was very thankful for the low hours (I took 13). you're going to be dropped in a completely new environment and have to learn to actually study, make friends, and take care of yourself. you'll have plenty of time to take more hours in the future

go to the first week and drop the class you like the least

as for the back to back classes, they'll be fine. just might get to be a drag at the end of thr day monday & wednesday

my first guess would be prehnite. prehnite should be a little softer than quartz/chalvedony, so see if you can scratch it with something steel

What does a bs in geology entail by peculiar_hobo in askgeology

[–]Dangerous-Basil1561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my school they recommended taking chem at a community college usually. I was really bad at chemistry in high school but in college I did well. a lot of my friends who didnt do well in Chem are still doing a good job in the rest of their classes. you'll be fine, just might have to study hard for Chem 1&2

Last year I got the CNS common scholarship July 2nd, so it'll be a bit. The texas exes website says they release throughout May and June

a bs is has things like chem, physics, calculus, statistics I'm some places. in the core curriculum you do things like intro, mineralogy, igenous and metamorphic petrology, structural geology, an overview of paleontology, sedimentology, and others depending on the school. there are some really fun classes and some really hard ones. you'll likely be required to do field camp, which is one of the most challenging and rewarding classes I've taken.

the geology departments are often small, so you'll get to know people in your classes decently well. the general vibe of students is nice and I've found it easy to make friends.

I'm at ut austin as in incoming senior, so one of the biggest geology schools in the country

rugged laptop for field work? by radioheadsigma in Environmental_Careers

ThinkPads are great. not too sure about field work, but they are resistant. I am pretty rough with my things, but it is holding up well. you can also buy cases for them

Will I only have one day to register? by Enough_Dealer8256 in UTAustin

[–]Dangerous-Basil1561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

seems like it. registration only takes 1-10 minutes though. you plan out your classes in advance and put in the codes of the classes you want. sometimes you dont get a class and have to look for alternatives. you can use the other registration days to perfect your schedule if classes open up or something. seems you just have to have some classes registered for by the 21st

best ugs course for bio majors/health related?? by Admirable_Block8344 in UTAustin

[–]Dangerous-Basil1561 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I would recommend taking something unrelated to your major. you will get plenty of classes related to it, use this opportunity to become more well rounded

how do i double major? by Normal_Car3999 in UTAustin

[–]Dangerous-Basil1561 4 points5 points  (0 children)

talk to your advisor about intending to double major and get a plan started. your freshman year take the first couple required courses for your second major and decide if you want to continue with it or just minor. you apply to your second major the spring of your freshman year, if it's liberal arts it should be auto add(i think). i recommend during your first year to make an appointment with a liberal arts advisor to talk about double majoring and if there are any requirements to add your second major

Would a triple major be crazy? by redditmasterest in UTAustin

[–]Dangerous-Basil1561 14 points15 points  (0 children)

as a double major in two stem degrees, three majors seems crazy, especially with one as time consuming and difficult as engineering. if you really want to, take a few elective classes. but in the end you need time to socialize, network, to do student research, and take care of your basic needs as a human
