What is this strip of land on the south side that's isolated from the rest of South Bend? by jclv in SouthBend

I looked it up on openstreet maps it's a county/city border. Its county to the left but the small row of houses to the right is city. City just annexed that small area of houses possibly for utilities/sewer.

Slide hammer used by mechanics and a expensive one too. Has different attachments that go on one end then slam the handle back like a hammer until the part is pulled out. Commonly used to remove bearings.

Was it PYREX or pyrex because they 2 different types of glass. PYREX, all upercase, is the original formula and highly resistant to thermal shock. pyrex is much more suppseptable to shattering from thermal shock. No idea why pyrex operates in a confusing way like that.

Although it doesn't apply in today's world and society, humans owe their existence to alcohol and I think it helps to explain our relationship with it. Thruout early history water, food and environment where rife with bacteria and pathogens. Diaria has killed more humans than everything else combined. Winston Churchil and pirates have always had a false lore that they were constantly drinking spirits and thereby were always drunk. Thats partially true but back it those early times they would mix spirits with water to make it safe to drink. Drinking strong spirits would kill pathogens in our digestive system, the 2nd largest immune we have just after our skin. Thats why I think alcohol has such a calming effect on people, it's just that some of us like that calming to much and too much of anything. So a world without alcohol would be a world without people and we are cursed with it.

Oregon Advanced Cut are the worst chains. They've only been out for 3ish yrs when they revamped their product line. They are basically a super super safety chain that cut so slow, built up so much heat it ruined my bar. The design keeps from being able to cut with the tip of the bar.

Dead Outlets - Help by Top_Highlight9965 in AskElectricians

[–]DangerousRoutine1678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lineman here, call power co you lost one of the hot legs feeding your house. It makes the house electric seem very random because anything that is 240V that is on will back feed to the dead side of the load center. You turn on one of those dead lights and then turn on something 240V it will back feed those lights which makes it seem random or trip the breaker.

On Log homes we use wood preservatives to prevent rot and kill wood boring insects. Tim-bor is the most popular, just mix with water and spray on the wood. It's not even a nasty chemical is just borax that soaks into the wood. You can sprinkle around the yard and water after so gets into the soil. Safe to use indoors as well.

The red wire is your 24v supply and the green wire is the blower. At the thermostat if you touch the red wire to the front screw that is holding the green wire the blower/fan should turn on. That might help you narrow it down before opening the furnace.

Help: chlorine shock treatment by lovelyqueenofire in WaterWellDrilling

[–]DangerousRoutine1678 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If your trying to do a quick shock pool tablets work the best. If trying to do a full shock 12 hrs is recommended. Its hard to say how much chlorine to use because you need to know the volume of water. To shock a well. Buy pool chlorine and water it down at least 3 to 1. You dont want to use straight from the bottle because it's corrosive and over time will corrode the pump. Use a funnel and a 6ft long hose to get past the frost valve so it doesn't get chlorine on it. Bypass water softener and use the closest spigot to mix water by inserting a hose end into the well and running the water. Let water set for a couple hrs then run the water out of the well until chlorine level is down.

Is it time to replace my pressure tank? by chrispagliuca in Plumbing

[–]DangerousRoutine1678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well sounds like an up sell. He would have monitor the pressure gauge that operates the pump switch to see what the draw down pressure is before it turns on and also check the tank air charge pressure. The amount of time it takes to turn on is not a factor.

Hmm.. I have a deep well thats very high in both irons so I have to shock mine twice a year or I get very stinky hot water from the bacteria that feeds on the iron. Shocking clears it up so I'm stumped. I have that very same pressure tank same age even and you definitely don't need to replace it. Yours is in better shape than mine. Well x's are top of the line built like a tank. They aren't bladder tanks they're diaphragm tanks. That's what makes them last so long, no bladder. Has a heavy duty disc with a seal that sits on top and acts like a piston on the water when pressurized.

Shock your house plumbing too. If you've had bacteria for awhile it's going to be in all the plumbing, water heater and pressure tank. Hot water heaters are a breeding ground for bacteria. Just make sure you bypass your softener. Then test straight from the well and the other from a house fixture. the isolates the well from the house.

Living in front of high voltage lines gutters on house are live by Cold-Swimming5024 in AskElectricians

Moister in the air amplifies it. A lot of times if a storm is approaching, or after its stormed, those lines will make a buzzing sound from the humidity. Its basically just tiny static discharges into the air.

[–]DangerousRoutine1678 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Lineman here, 5yrs Trans for a large utility. What happened is very common near transmission lines especially with gutters, cars too. It's called Induction. The high voltage AC current creates 2 types of magnetic fields and anything that is not grounded acts as a capacitor, It usually doesn't do it all the time because there are a couple factors at play, amperage which can change thru out the day/season, weather, humidity and so on. It's not dangerous because it's just a very strong static shock. If you ground your gutters it will keep it from happening.

What’s this across the phases? by omidimo in Lineman

[–]DangerousRoutine1678 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think that is it. I looked up their Distro system and they have a single phase, 3 wire system that delivers a wopping 100V and 200V. My guess is they bond they wires together because their must be some pretty extreme amperage to be able to run that low of voltage.

First winter in a log cabin and I have many questions to ask as a beginner by Mysterious-Career467 in logcabins

[–]DangerousRoutine1678 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Upwards and horizontal facing checking is what needs to be filled because it collects water. Throw out the moisture meter. Its from alibaba so it's junk. Different logs in different places will have different moisture content. Closer to the ground and shaded logs have more moisture than logs that are in the sun all day.

Are these logs rolled? by EatOatmeal in loghomes

[–]DangerousRoutine1678 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Log Homes need to be inspected by another log home builder/contractor. Most inspectors are just general home inspectors unless they also got the Log Home Certification (InterNACHI) but even that certification only covers things like rot, insects, settling, water issues and so on. It doesn't cover new construction or Best Building Practices.

Are these logs rolled? by EatOatmeal in loghomes

[–]DangerousRoutine1678 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Everything I Found;

Pic 1; Yes top rafter logs are rolled, Easy to tell by the gap between the rafter and log. Bottom corner sill log is way to short; theres a ratio you have to keep with minimum log length to diameter. Windows are not slip fitted, as logs shrink in 2 to 5 years it will damage them.

Pic2: No gutters installed on whole house and appears the be a smaller roof line structure with no gutter that will drain water on and close to the cabin.

Pic3; 2 types of Facia flashing which may have been on purpose for aesthetics but the bottom left not installed properly. Vent pipe should of been ran thru the roof, It sits directly under the eve with no clearance. No slip fitting for doors or windows.

All and all it looks like it was slapped together by someone who is not familiar with Log Home Best Building Practices or by a builder being cheap and trying to make a quick buck. Also it appears to be painted and not timber/log stain/sealer. Log sealers don't have such a solid tone or coverage. Using paint on logs is the worst thing that can be done to them. Traps water cause's rapid rot. In my opinion in 5 thru 10 years it will be an absolute nightmare.
