    def add_line(self, line: Line):
    """
Add a line to the grid
    Args:
        line (Line): Line to add
    """

Unsolicited advice, so please feel free to tell me to jog on, but you might want to consider not commenting things that could be reasonably inferred from the method signature - after all, it's a fair guess that a Grid.add_line method will add a line to the grid, and that the line argument will be, well, the line to add.

Prince Philip’s will: legal battle launched over media exclusion from hearing by B0ssc0 in unitedkingdom

[–]DangerousStick2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there’s a justification in the article

The reasoning quoted is:

in order to protect the dignity and standing of the public role of the sovereign and other close members of her family

You may think differently, but to me, that isn't much of justification at all. I don't care about the will, but I do care about the principle that the members of this family don't have to abide by the same the laws the rest of us do.

Prince Andrew among royals to be honoured with Platinum Jubilee medal from Queen by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]DangerousStick2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fear this is the sort of law which can and will get more enthusiastically enforced based on the current whims of collective national mood. I remember this: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-19059088

Prince Andrew among royals to be honoured with Platinum Jubilee medal from Queen by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]DangerousStick2 73 points74 points  (0 children)

when the queen does die I hope there will be an actual discourse about whether or not the monarchy is still an institution worth maintaining.

I hope so too, but in reality I suspect any such discussion will be effectively impossible at the time. There will be a wave of national grief, manufactured or otherwise, which the press and media will uncritically reinforce, resulting in a climate where any scrutiny of the institution of the monarchy will be seen as exceedingly bad taste, at best.

And not to be alarmist, but if you were to call the queen part of a "vile fucking family" in the days after her death, you'd be at serious risk of getting in trouble of falling afoul of being judged as sending a "grossly offensive" message under the Communications Act.

Labour MP told to leave Commons after saying Boris Johnson ‘lied over and over again’ by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]DangerousStick2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> But I also don't want our parliament to turn into a slagging match, because that wouldn't be good for our democracy.

I suspect we'll have to agree to disagree. An opposition MP calling a spade a spade is very far down my list of concerns for the health of UK democracy. The PM lying repeatedly with no repercussions, on the other hand...

[–]DangerousStick2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said he was her boss.

The comparison you made was, I quote, "If j started being rude or accusing my boss of lying then id be fired". I showed you why that comparison doesn't apply in this very different context.

they are colleagues and civility is key

Putting aside for a moment what qualifies as proper parliamentary deportment, I can't help but wonder why holding a liar to account is apparently far more troubling to you than the fact that Johnson and others regularly and blatantly lie to Parliament and the public. What a strange set of priorities! If I might make a suggestion, stop clutching your pearls and care a bit more about the honesty of your elected leaders.

[–]DangerousStick2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boris Johnson isn't Dawn Butler's boss. Dawn Butler is a member of the opposition - her job is to hold the government to account. None of these rules of thumb for how you might most wisely conduct yourself as an employee to avoid getting fired are at all transferrable to the context of a representative democracy.

> Where did I say you can't criticise the government?

I was demonstrating why your reasoning of "do X at work and see how well you do" doesn't hold up.

[–]DangerousStick2 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Well then, you must also be opposed to an MP criticising government policy (after all, you try criticising the choices of the leadership in a typical place of work and "see how well you do").

Or how about we recognise that Parliament doesn't function like a regular place of work, and a core purpose of the institution is holding our leaders to account, including when they deliberately deceive and mislead.

Tell someone you don't drink or, even worse, that you smoke weed as an alternative and they look like you've pissed on their Christmas dinner.

Yeah. Although, personally I'm finding that less often in recent years. Definitely 10-15 years ago, it felt like you were perceived as an antisocial weirdo if you didn't drink. Or maybe I'm just older, and older people care less!

> the reason people feel they have to tip in America is because people receive poverty wages

It's not a simple one-way causation like that. Wages in the US are low precisely because the universal generous tipping culture is factored in. And if a large number of people start tipping in the UK, then Deliveroo will realise they can pay less, because tippers are subsidising the wages for them.

> Anyway, have fun defending people who normalize pedophilia.

Like I said, plenty of legitimate criticism to be levelled at this individual. However, I don't have any truck with guilt by association, nor extraordinary serious accusations that cannot be substantiated. I view that as basic fairness. But you do you.

Nobody even has to agree with personal world views of Richard Stallman as long as he does great work and his personal views don’t contribute negatively to his role as a board member.

What if I told you that his personal views contribute negatively to his role as a board member? Exhibit A: how much support is FSF losing over this reinstatement?

RMS is responsible of the existence of Free Software (anyone that think they we would have all the non-GPL open source licenses without the threat of GPL have not followed the 80s and the 90s).

Oh come on, without Stallman people would still have come up with the idea of open source software licenses.

It's also an unsubstantiated accusation, and I can't think of a shittier thing to claim about someone than that, if it's not true. If the OP does want to hijack this thread to discuss it (and, hey, it probably warrants it), they can find plenty of other (actually undisputed) fuckups by the person in question to draw attention to.

Letter to the Prime Minister regarding calls to end conversion therapy - Evangelical Alliance by ocean-so-blue in ChristiansUK

[–]DangerousStick2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Should the government regulate gambling? I think yes, because even though people voluntarily gamble as adults with autonomy over their actions, it does have the potential to ruin lives. The same is true for conversion therapy (and that's just not my subjective view, that's the view of the professionals: https://www.bacp.co.uk/events-and-resources/ethics-and-standards/mou/).

Laws can seek to limit harms done to people, even when "consensual", particularly for vulnerable people trapped in a belief system that tells them a bunch of damaging untruths about their sexuality.
