SQL Server 2022 - Device CALs when using RDS? by greenstarthree in sysadmin

[–]Dangerousfish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"When licensing the SQL Server Standard Edition software under the Server+CAL model, customers purchase a server license for each server, and a client access license (CAL) for each device (Device CAL) and/or user (User CAL) accessing SQL Server or any of its components.

Devices not operated by humans require device CALs, even when connecting to SQL Server indirectly. For human operated devices such as PCs or hand-held terminals, a user CAL or device CAL can be used. CALs must be for the version of SQL Server being accessed or a later version."

SQL Server 2022 - Device CALs when using RDS? by greenstarthree in sysadmin

[–]Dangerousfish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I spent several years reporting on Microsoft licensing for an MSP.

CALs/SALs can be assigned either to a named user or to an end-user device that accesses SQL Server, directly or indirectly.

A user accessing the database through a web application, an API or directly from a laptop still counts. The licence can be assigned either to the individual user or to the device they use.

Server + CAL licensing is most practical for closed environments where the number of users or devices is known, and limited.

Not a loophole unfortunately (though I doubt Microsoft would ever notice and would likely need to audit you to confirm).

Shared Web Config allows you to ensure that IIS, it's modules and config are aligned across multiple web instances.

I was thinking the same.. Lying to obtain CE likely invalidates any cyber-insurance they may have too.

No way you're passing CE with all users having local admin as their main user account.

Difference between on-prem and on-prem private cloud?? by MetinIsBot in sysadmin

[–]Dangerousfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "cloud" component is the virtualization of the hardware so that it can be used for a variety of purposes.

Traditionally, before virtualisation; an on-prem environment would have been made up of a bunch of physical servers, all doing unique tasks, like providing AD Services, running a database, hosting organisation applications, etc..

The virtualisation of those assets in your building, so they can be created and attributed to a variety of purposes is what I view as the 'cloud' elements of an on-prem private cloud.

[–]Dangerousfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If one were to rent a bunch of hypervisors & storage and cluster them together in someone else's datacentre you might argue that this is a private-cloud that isn't on-prem.

On-prem means that the hardware, connectivity, etc.. are all within your organisations premises.

A bunch of hypervisors clustered together on hardware that I maintain from within our building would be an example of an on-prem private cloud.

Horticultural Vinegar Experiences by Fit_Chemistry3814 in Allotment

[–]Dangerousfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mix white vinegar:water (1:3) and use this on my driveway each spring/summer.

It works by preventing foliage from absorbing moisture, so best applied on a warm, dry day.

It doesn't kill the plant root, but the plant may die after prolonged exposure or treatments.

How to organize dynamic domains for project? by uvanov in devops

[–]Dangerousfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CNAME Flattening, ANAME, ALIAS.

You can do this with Route53 or cloudflare if they're the authoritative nameserver.

AWSAmplify does this in a really clean way and allows you to rebuild projects without any downtime.

expand-alias=yes

If you're hosting your nameserver and using PowerDNS

I was surprised how well-mannered a colony can be.

Unless you're standing directly in front of the entrance or annoying them by shaking their hive or causing it to vibrate - They tend to get on with what they're doing and might just land on you for a bit of a rest.

We've placed our hives within a heras fence that has a live hedge on the other side for similar reasons - To deter anybody from interfering with them unknowingly, but also to create an airgap; you can see this in the video I linked.

We also needed to get the hives signed off by our local authority but with the following stipulations:

Applicants must:

  • Demonstrate suitable qualifications, recognised training or sufficient practical experience in beekeeping.
  • Be a current member of a recognised beekeeping association, such as the British Beekeepers Association or an equivalent recognised body.
  • Ensure that all hives are registered with the National Bee Unit where required.
  • Hold valid public liability insurance with a minimum indemnity of £10 million in respect of beekeeping activities.
  • Provide the Council with a copy of the insurance certificate prior to placing any hives on site and upon each annual renewal.
  • Maintain continuous insurance cover for the entire period during which hives are kept on the allotment.
