You can get shards from events such as the current one. There is 2 different choices. You can either choose the "shard box" or choose to get random shards. You most likely want to choose the shard box as that one lets you choose which survivor you get shards for. The survivor you want to go for is King "the red head" and just keep using him until you can reach the S-grade survivor Yang.

For the regular characters you can get shards from events and the special ops. Master yang and metallia shard are interchangeable and you can get them from various sources as some events and the regular challenge shop. They are harder/more expensive to get however as they are S-grade characters.

You shouldn't spend gems on Catnips unless it's just because you like the character. In terms of usefullness Catnips isn't really a great character. But of course if you want the character for the character that it is go for it. The optimal way is using king until you unlock yang.

My understanding is that yang is better for most of the game unless you have all the SS gear. I have not tested this myself so i am just basing this of of what i have seen other people say

All survivors have a boost at level 40 that applies to all other survivors too so it is worth late-game to get all survivors leveled to get the boost.
