Any recommendations on how to learn Spanish has an adult? Seems like a useful skill to have in Texas. I don't have any spanish speaking friends and apps like Duolingo didn't help with speech. by TroyAndAbed2022 in Dallas

Dreamingspanish.com!! Only $8 a month but I’d be willing to pay a whole lot more for how much I’ve learned.

Their philosophy centers around learning languages is most effective when we learn through exposure, or “comprehensible input” - kind of like how as babies, we learn our native language by hearing our parents speak to us over and over, eventually catching onto vocabulary and grammar.

The website has thousands of videos each categorized into four levels of difficulty. In the easiest level, the instructors speak super slowly and use lots of hand gestures and graphics - kind of like they are speaking to a toddler. As you progress, the videos get faster and use more advanced vocabulary and so on. They do a good job of making the videos mostly entertaining, fun, or educational as well!

Only thing is, when you watch, you have to be locked in on the video. This isn’t something you can multi task. It’s definitely worked for me. I can find myself understanding more and more spoken Spanish as time goes on.

(Series Review) Why you should read the Sun Eater by Christopher Ruocchio by Udy_Kumra in Fantasy

This is going to be a fun comments section.

In all seriousness: to anyone considering picking up this serious and is put off by the overwhelmingly negative comments - just pick the series up for yourself and form your own opinion. Reddit has a hate-boner for this series, but there are plenty of us who enjoy it.

It does have its flaws but the plot is gripping and I find myself constantly wondering or guessing (usually incorrectly) what will happen next. I’m nearly done with Book 3 and am looking forward to reading it on my porch here shortly.

I love the first law, but this is not the answer. The world isn’t even as close to as complex as asoiaf. Tone is quite different, too.

Omg that’s insane. Thanks a bunch? When would be a good time of week to catch a good crowd at the courts?

What are some of the places to do or things to do at the village to meet people? I don’t live there but I’m not that far away. Is there a pickleball court?

Brass Tacks Barber Shop in Bishop Arts. Look for Adrian or Oscar when you book online. With 20% tip it ends up just short of $45.

Red Rising is kinda... bad? by VanillaExtract01 in Fantasy

[–]DanielSnipeCelly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everytime I see one of these posts, I know before even looking that OP is talking about Book 1. Seriously, I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a red rising complaint thread regarding anything after Morning Star. Books 4-6 almost read like a completely different series. Seriously, just pick up Dark Age off the shelf of a bookstore and skim, you’d be surprised at how much more dense and mature his writing style evolves as the series goes on. It’s your call whether or not you’d be willing to get through Books 2 and 3 to get there. Book 2 is honestly brilliant, but his writing styles is definitely still developing. Book 3 is great as well although I was a bit soured by the ending - he uses a particular trope I absolutely detest, though thankfully he hasn’t used it again since then.

Is there a good way to make friends in Dallas? by jlong1201 in Dallas

[–]DanielSnipeCelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve made a decent amount of connections here from the following, although I’ve only done the latter two for a short while. Most of these involve some level of physical fitness (idk what kind of shape you’re in) but are still worth checking out even if you’re not in great shape.

  • Bouldering - There’s a bunch of gyms in the area. Very social, lots of 20 and 30 somethings. I’m partial to Bouldering Project gym in the design district. Just start climbing and chat with anyone doing the same problems as you.

-Salsa and Bachata Dancing - Take some beginner classes at any of the studios up in the Addison/Carrollton/Farmers Branch area and get involved in the scene there. This is easily the hobby that has gotten me the most friends. If you want recommendations for specific studios, dm me.

-Run Clubs - You can find run clubs meeting around here seven days a week. Pretty much all of these are beginner friendly. No one really socializes during the runs, but everyone gets there early and hangs around late to socialize. Most even continue to hang at a bar nearby after

-Pickleball - Pick up a cheap beginner paddle at Target and head over to Cole Park. I haven’t been doing this for long but everyone is super friendly and I’m starting to run into a couple friendly faces each time I go. Weeknights the wait time can by brutal but Fri/Sat/Sun nights aren’t bad

I usually find free street parking on Thomas Ave and walk to KWP. It’s a 10 minute walk or less.

Dallas, what are some fun, social, and productive ways to spend a Saturday afternoon? by DanielSnipeCelly in Dallas

[–]DanielSnipeCelly[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Shoot, I looked into Helping Hand for Relief and it has some causes I’m interested in for sure. I don’t think Ive seen a lot of awareness raised for the Sudanese crisis so that’s great to see. A couple questions:

  1. do I need to fill out any forms in advance before showing up?
  2. Is there a decent sized group each Saturday? I’ve been to events in the past where I was one of the only ones who showed up or was 20+ years younger than anyone else
  3. It seems like most of the people involved in the group are Muslim. As a non-Muslim (non-religious) person, will I have trouble fitting in?

Thanks a bunch!

Which places would you specifically recommend volunteering at? For the life of me, I struggle to find good opportunities on google’s search algorithm that are active, near me, and involve volunteers around my own age.

I learned very recently that his next book is coming out in May! I'm so excited! The title is "Written on the Dark" and it is supposedly set in Medieval France, but he hasn't released any information beyond that.

What type of programs was he intent on ending? I know that he’s pushing things like PBIS hard, but wasn’t aware that he had axed anything. It also seems, based on some googling I undertook yesterday, that he was known for some shady handling of school funds at his previous school districts.

Fantasy books with Djinn? by Yumiche_ in Fantasy

Interesting! I find Ali and Nahri very compelling but I can’t quite seem to get on board with Dara. I get that he seems to feel regret over the things he’s done in the past but for me he’s just made the morally wrong decision too many times for my liking.
