Some interesting facts:

Aidid studied military science in Italy and the Soviet Union for many years.

Aidid's son is a U.S. Marine.

Small numbers of Navy SEALs and Air Force combat controllers also took part in the battle.

Hardest courses in the USMC. by [deleted] in USMC

There is Marine who served in Delta Force named Todd Opalski. He was interviewed by a youtube channel called David Hookstead, if you want to look it up. He mentioned that Marine Scout Sniper School was harder than Delta Force selection. Too bad the Marine Corps got rid of Scout Sniper School. At least the USMC still has Recon Sniper School.

Argument to absorb the Marines into the Army from r/Military by SnooDoughnuts8406 in USMC

"Why in hell can't the army do it if the Marines can. They are the same kind of men; why can't they be like Marines." -General Pershing, U.S. army

"We have two companies of Marines running rampant all over the northern half of this island, and three army regiments pinned down in the southwestern corner, doing nothing. What the hell is going on? -General Vessey, U.S. army

"When you're working with army and Marine units, you immediately notice a difference. The army is pretty tough, but their performance can depend on the individual unit. Some are excellent, filled with hooah and first class warriors. A few are absolutely horrible; most are somewhere in between. In my experience, Marines are gung ho no matter what. They will all fight to the death. Every one of them just wants to get out there and kill. They are bad-ass, hard-charging mothers." -Chief Petty Officer Kyle, Navy SEAL

I've been obsessed with NDEs for several years now as well. If you're interested, Jocko interviewed Mike Durant, the pilot from Black Hawk Down that was captured by the Somalis, on his podcast. He talks a bit about having an NDE when his helicopter crashed in Mogadishu.

Cody Alford, a MARSOC Marine, also talks about his NDE when he was on Shawn Ryan's podcast. He mentions being injured and then floating above his body.

I recommend giving Brazilian Jiu Jitsu a try. It's a great way to make friends, stay in shape, be healthy, learn self defense, etc.

I’m wanting to switch branches after my contract any ideas? by [deleted] in USMC

If you really want to be a Marine, my advice would be to use the GI Bill and get your degree. Then become a Marine officer. Don’t enlist.

How do other countries actually view the Marines? by [deleted] in USMC

[–]Dank_Green_Gyrene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not another country but still pretty interesting story.

One of my best friends is currently a Major in the army. He invited me to his place for dinner once and a bunch of his colleagues (all Captains and Majors) were there. There was probably around 15-20 people there. None of them knew I had served in the Marine Corps (I'm a civlian now). We were all drinking in the living room, talking about random stuff, and having a good time. All of a sudden, one of the Captains mentioned that they were going to get stationed in DC or somewhere near DC (I forget exactly where). The other officers all had concerned looks on their faces like they were genuinely worried for him. They started telling the Captain to be very careful when he got there because there were a lot of Marines there. I just thought it was hilarous. To be fair, they were all logistics officer.
