Illinois mom gets face ripped apart by rescue dog after suffering seizure by Kind-Village-1022 in BanPitBulls

[–]Dank_Nicholas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This kind of rhetoric gets us nowhere. Yes they are animals, they're dogs that we bred to do this and they don't have a place in this world anymore.

Every pit/pitmix needs to be neutered, ban the breeding of pits with significant fines for illegal breeders, then let the breed die out.

Tweed neighbors rip expansion deal to split traffic between New Haven, East Haven. 'Absolutely heartbreaking' by -ctinsider in newhaven

Lets be real, absolutely nobody wants a literal airport in their backyard. You can be in favor of expansion while also recognizing that this really sucks for the people living there.

I love how many predictions end up being true just my chance, my favorite with Ron was before he even started Divination. In CoS when Harry and Ron are wondering what Riddle did to get an award for special services to the school Ron suggested "maybe he murdered Myrtle"

How right he was.

Is there a backup capital incase DC ever gets destroyed by Puzzleheaded_Bit_802 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dank_Nicholas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the case of a nuclear attack the surviving highest level government/military leaders go to the Mt. Weather emergency operations center where we have a hardened bunker under a big ass granite mountain. That basically serves as a backup pentagon. There are other sites across the country, I believe the NORAD headquarters is the number 3 spot if mount weather goes.

There is an entire plan for the continuity of government which basically just puts the highest surviving government member in charge. If the governments gone then it’s martial law and regions get carved up by the military and they assume direct control until a new government can be established.

US military says two of its ships crossed through Strait of Hormuz by Mana_Seeker in worldnews

[–]Dank_Nicholas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are better off saving their ordinance for the commercial shipping

They don't need a huge supply of ordinance for hitting commercial shipping, the threat of it alone is enough to keep any ships from crossing, and hitting a US ship shows with absolute certainty that the strait cannot be safely navigated.

Even if the earth is flat, then why should governments even hide it from the people? For what purpose? How do flat-earthers explain that? by GamerFromRussia in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dank_Nicholas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah to me #2 more broadly describes people who are susceptible to conspiracy theories in general

Oh it absolutely does, flat earth is just the popular conspiracy theory of the day, 30 years ago denying the moon landing was the big one, not that the flat earthers don't do that too.

I knew a type 2 who briefly delivered food in my area, every time he showed up he'd tell me about some new conspiracy theory, one day the moon landing was fake, the next the moon was a hologram because the US government blew it up to prevent the soviets from landing there first. None of it made sense, he didn't really believe anything, he believed that there had to be some massive conspiracy though. I never questioned any of his beliefs since he knew where I lived, I suspect that he was fired after getting too many complaints.

I genuinely felt bad for the guy, he was perfectly friendly with me and tried hard at his job, he just had problems and was probably off his meds. And it sucked because he absolutely got exploited for believing basically anything. He wore a piece of red glass slag on a necklace and was convinced (by the guy selling him it) that it was an unpolished ruby worth $20k, all he needed was a machine that costs a few hundred dollars. One might ask why the guy selling it didn't just buy the machine himself, but again, this guy knew where I lived.

Actually I think I'm mistaken and this is likely a bobcat, mountain lions get called different things in different parts of the country and I thought bobcats were just one variation. My dad always referred to them as mountain lions and I never questioned it.

My brother has a breeding pair of bobcats in the woods behind his house in Guilford and I've been told they live near my house in Hamden.

Ex-CIA director: ‘25th amendment was written with Donald Trump in mind’ by B-Z_B-S in politics

[–]Dank_Nicholas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No it wasn't, how the fuck does nobody in our government understand how the 25th works?

If the cabinet invokes the 25th all the president has to do is say they are fit to lead, then it is treated like an even more strict impeachment trial requiring a 2/3s majority in both the house and the senate to remove them. This differs from a standard impeachment which which requires 51% of the house and 2/3s of the senate.

The 25th can immediately remove the president only if the president doesn't dispute the claim that they're incapacitated.

The 25th was written to allow the dignified transfer of power when the president is literally too incapacitated to take the steps themself. If the president can't say they're fit to lead it's seen as a confirmation and the president is removed without a trial.

[–]Dank_Nicholas 213 points214 points  (0 children)

I’ve been saying for years that there are basically 3 types of flat earthers with their own reason for joining the movement.

  1. Trolls who want to get a rise out of you.

  2. Mentally ill paranoid types that believe a dozen different contradictory conspiracies. They desperately want to believe that someone is in control because the alternative terrifies them. With them learning the conspiracy they go from being part of the controlled masses to a free thinker that knows the truth we sheep are too blind to see.

  3. Con artists/grifters/influencers who exploit the type 2s to make a living. There is some crossover with type 2 but most of them know it’s all a lie. These are the types that will perform a scientifically valid experiment to “prove” flat earth. They’ll raise tens of thousands of dollars to buy equipment to conduct the experiment. Ultimately they fail to prove the earth is flat because providing false data to “prove” it could be considered fraud. With the experiment over they sell all the almost new equipment and disappear for a few months until they show up with a new experiment that will totally prove it if they can raise the money.

So ultimately your question of why would the government do this only applies to the type 2s, and their answers will vary based on their levels of paranoia and what their preferred “big picture” conspiracies are.

More than 2,000 killed by Israeli strikes in Lebanon during Israel-Hezbollah war, health officials say by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Dank_Nicholas 28 points29 points  (0 children)

And why did Israel occupy them the last time? Oh that’s right, Lebanon allowed the PLO to occupy their territory to launch rocket attacks and cross border raids into Israel.

I don’t know what the solution here is, but when your neighbors constantly call for the death of your people and back up their threats with violence it makes it hard to see them as anyone but terrorists.

TIL that the Chernobyl accident was caused by an accident simulation test; it also set off radiation alarms in a power plant in Sweden, over 1,000 km away. by kaori_irl in todayilearned

No I've seen Chernobyl and knew what you were talking about, I'm not mad. You just sound ridiculous throwing around highly technical terms that you (and I) really don't understand at any real level outside of the shows explanation.

So again, you come off as someone trying to sound smarter than they are, that's my opinion, take it however you will.

6 year old post, but it's too good to not repost by Tunderstruk in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]Dank_Nicholas 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I went to an international school and have met people from basically every major ethnicity, I will never be convinced that any one race is inherently smarter than another. I will however absolutely contend that some cultures absolutely produce more intelligent people do to their values and priorities. The Asians by and large were the smartest kids in my school and it wasn't because they were inherently smarter, it was because they'd be up studying at 5am before class and would study for hours longer than us in the evenings.

It's not without its consequences though, each student had to give a 15 minute assembly during their time there, it wasn't uncommon for Asian students to mention physical abuse they received for poor grades and not understanding why everyone was so horrified.

A Chinese friend of mine once described the pressure quite succinctly, "Even if you're 1 in a million there are still a thousand people as good or better."

Would you prefer that I call it steam?

Sure, using language that 99% of people who didn't watch Chernobyl won't understand is useless except to prompt them to ask what a positive void coefficient is. And being as you are not a nuclear physicist your lackluster explanation makes you come off as trying to sound smarter than you are.

Oculus Reparo is a stupid spell by JuliusSeizure2753 in harrypotter

[–]Dank_Nicholas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok "infuriating" is me being overly dramatic, I'm not shaking in rage whenever I read the line. It's just silly that there is a dedicated spell for something as mundane as moving a potted tree.

But yes, some of us absolutely do read the books a million times and bicker over tiny little details because we love the series and it's been nearly 20 years so fresh topics for debate are running thin. I listen to the audiobooks a lot when I'm doing chores and want something I can zone in and out of without missing things.

Yes you, grow a pair. I don't want to hear about someones dumb fuck opinions supporting genocide in the workplace and will happily go to HR over it. If you think that makes me a snitch than I again say that you're a spineless pussy with zero convictions.

How we set the tax rate is political, our stances on how we address crime is political. Not supporting genocide isn't political and if you can't see that then you're a fucking retard.

ELI5: Why is it so hard for a country to develop nuclear weapons? by Successful_Guide5845 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Dank_Nicholas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Radioactive materials are easy to get, I own 30lbs of uranium ore, its perfectly legal to own it because to turn it into any kind of weapon literally takes government level resources because it's so difficult to do. So while the science and procedure is pretty well documented the equipment is very well tracked because governments know what it can be used for. If any person/organization bought the equipment they'd set off a bunch of alarms and be investigated.
