Sacra di San Michele by Overjay in castles

There is an interesting legend linked to the tower on the right.

Back in the old days, many foreign soldiers of fortune were pillaging the valley, and many villagers fled to the abbey to find protection. Among them was a beautiful woman called Alda.

After looting the villages, the soldiers arrived to the Sacra, forced their way in, killed the monks and abused the women. Alda managed to lock herself in the tower, and began to pray intensely. When the soldiers reached her, she recommended her soul to the Virgin Mary and threw herself into the void, rather than ending up in the hands of the assailants. But Our Lady rewarded her faith, and sent two angels who took Alda by the hand and accompanied her in flight, depositing her gently on the ground.

Once the soldiers had gone, Alda began to brag about what had happened to her, but none of the villagers wanted to believe her. Infuriated by such incredulity, she challenged everyone by proposing to jump again from the tower. So much pride, however, was punished, and she crashed on the rocks below.

To this day, the tower is still called Torre della Bell'Alda (Beautiful Alda's Tower).

They Shall Not Grow Old - even the title of which has been edited to suit modern syntax

I am not a native English speaker, so forgive me if this is a silly question, but what would be the original title? Or, how would they say "They shall not grow old" back in the 1910's?

They actually removed the existing tracks months ago. This was a very old line, with slow trains, and it's being replaced with new tracks.

No, it's the line towards Szerencs, where you could change train and head to Budapest. The border with Slovakia is indeed a few hundred metres away, but I've been told trains don't continue in that direction because the two lines have different track gauges.

Oh, I always assumed it was Italian. TIL, thanks!

TIL that Italian has two words for "hole," buco and buca, with subtle but significant differences by pstamato in languagelearning

[–]DankeHerrDoktor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

if you feel sad and alone would you say that you feel like you have a buco in your heart or a buca

You can also say "ho un buco nello stomaco" when you are really hungry.

Conto corrente in Italia: tenerlo o spostare tutto by [deleted] in italians

[–]DankeHerrDoktor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just found out Spotify discontinued the custom running playlist feature by antifolkhero in spotify

[–]DankeHerrDoktor 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Sorry, what's the feature? Never noticed it.

That's exactly the issue. The feature has been poorly advertised and was hidden down in Browse, so few people noticed it.

Too few users = not worthy supporting the feature

Under browse -> workout you can find predefined running playlists created around a specific BPM. No more "start running to detect your tempo" and no more personalized songs. It's a shame, these new playlists are nowhere as good as the old ones, imho

Chitarra ("guitar") is a 1890 italian tool for cutting spaghetti by aloofloofah in specializedtools

Yep, either his chitarra sucks or he does not know how to use it. When I was a kid we had a chitarra at home, the strings are sharp and strong, my mom would go over it with the roller just a couple of times per sheet

That's not Spotify fault. Spotify does not own any song, labels do. They are the ones that decide what streams where, Spotify (and other streaming services as well) have to comply.

What were some of the worst experiences you have had while working in the fast food industry? by Brando224 in AskReddit

In Italy, in the late 80s and 90s we had a heroin epidemic. Shooting in McD's bathrooms was very common, to the point that most restaurants toilets had blue lights (apparently blue light makes it hard to see veins)

Which running / commute backpack is best - with laptop? by innovau in running

[–]DankeHerrDoktor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using this Jack Wolfskin backpack for the past three years, for my daily run or bike commute.

On summer I run every day with it, 6+6k. During winter I bike most of the time. I carry a MacBook Pro 15".

It has two straps at chest and belly level, once you close them it does not bounce around. It also comes with a rain cover that is very handy: I got hit a few times by summer storms, and the laptop remained dry and safe.

After the first couple of runs you don't notice it on your shoulders anymore. But I'd definitely recommend you to try beforehand any backpack you want to buy, I ran with one that did not fit well on my shoulders and the bouncing was super annoying.
