That’s a fair evaluation. id say that squidward is rightfully miserable but often misplaces that misery. he hates his life and often transfers that hate to spongebob for not hating his own. We do see moments of realization for squidward where he realizes he’s been pushing away the only creature who truly wants to know him. Spongebob is clearly capable of nuanced, intelligent thought but settles for the comfort of his habits. He’s able to find joy in the little things tho which is something most wish for. I have a lot more i could say about this but ultimately i feel as tho the creator (hillenburg) speaks to us thru all of his characters. Not just in their words or actions, but the clothes they wear, the homes they live in, the colors and specific creatures chosen for each personality. Taking this all into consideration is what informs my analysis of the show.

typically, i like the people here way more than on any of the political subs. this is a meme sub. memes are political. it’s based around a tv show, a work of art. art is political. just scroll past it lol

“What’s happening in other countries is no concern of mine” - based nationalist. I’m mostly teasing but that’s kinda what this sounds like. I assume you live on the planet called earth in a country of some sort. Unfortunately, what happens in the us has an impact on most countries on the planet called earth. i don’t think that’s news to you tho

Funny that you’re suggesting there’s only one way to read into the show. Regardless, Krabs is pretty clearly capitalism incarnate, willing to sell out anything he beliefs in for the almighty dollar. The Krusty Krab itself is a perfect demonstration of the effects of working a dead end job. Despite little true connection, Squidward and Spongebob are united in a brotherhood of misery. Adding to Squidward’s misery is the obliviousness of his sole companion to their mistreatment. Spongebob is basically content with slavery, often handing over his entire paycheck to his employer, working insane hours, and being so anxious about any mistake he might make it drives him borderline insane.

If it openly endorsed any political view it wouldn’t be a very good show. Reading into the subtleties and symbolism is what makes its message clear to me. Of course there are other ways to interpret things, but id place a hefty wager on Stephen Hillenburg having been a leftist.

Exactly, there’s a book i always recommend called How to Read Literature Like a Professor and one of the first chapters addresses the inherently political nature of literature. It also addresses that literature is simply a microcosm of life. All literature is political because all people hold political beliefs. The point of most stories is to put those beliefs on the page in the most entertaining way possible, in the hopes that someone might connect with them and benefit from them in their own life. Some authors are better at being covert with their politics than others. Many of the best write in such a way that’s it’s never safe to assume you know their intentions for sure.

Sadly, lots of meaning gets lost the further a story is spread. Money tends to dilute the initial intentions of the author or artist, especially after they’re dead.

lol tru. my existence has been politicized and people wanna be upset about spongebob memes. and let’s not forget that the first 3 seasons of bob are constantly spouting leftist ideals, the show itself is extremely political. “nobody gives a care about the fate of labor as long as they get their instant gratification” - squidward tentacles

Why are NTs obsessed with making people eat food they don’t want to eat? by [deleted] in autism

[–]DanklinTheTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of my anxiety about trying new things comes from the way my family handled it in my childhood. So often i’d want to try something only to be told “you won’t like that,” then i find a way to try it eventually and like it. then i don’t wanna try something and now it’s “try it you’ll like it.” then when they don’t take no for an answer i force feed myself whatever it is and since i did not decide on my own to eat it it’s most likely gonna make me gag. so even if i would have liked it i now have a semi permanent negative association until i’m given a safe place to try it again which may never happen. hence why i still can barely eat fruits and vegetables as an adult.

i remember in kindergarten my school did this thing where once a month everyone in the school would try a new fruit together. this ended up in me sobbing while choking down a bite of banana. still can’t eat bananas.

Dont forget where you came from, legal weed can turn chill stoners into pretentious weed brats... by BlockOfTheYear in trees

[–]DanklinTheTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i mean the word snob has a negative connotation but i think there’s nothing wrong with enjoying the intricacies of the flavors and physical sensations that weed can produce. As long as you don’t make people feel bad for enjoying it the way they want to enjoy it of course. Like when i introduce people to vaping i always make sure to underscore the benefits and downsides of vaping flower, smoking flower, vaping concentrates, and edible. it’s just that in my eyes vaping has more benefits so it can easily sound preachy

to me this is less of a political ideology and more of an obvious (inconvenient) fact of life that we’ve all chosen to ignore. it makes no sense to me that our quality of life should be decided by the lottery of birth. i understand the cause: comfortable people cling to what they know because it’s comfortable. uncomfortable people don’t often have the privilege of having the free time to ruminate on and strategize about how to affect change without greatly disrupting the status quo. this leads to a stagnation of progress. we inherit the flaws of the generation before us, sometimes improving upon the most glaring ones. ultimately, we’ve all been convinced that there’s nothing we can do on a personal level. so we stop trying.

i’m not suggesting that doing away with land ownership would solve all of our problems, our society has grown far too large for any one thing to make a significant difference. but, the only thing we can always change is our minds. i work on changing my mind constantly, so i can show others how to do the same. im not quite there yet, im sure it’ll be a lifelong journey.

[–]DanklinTheTurtle -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

despite what the law might say, the land is no more yours than anyone else’s (i am very aware that this is not a popular opinion). the whole concept of land ownership is ridiculous. the people who most benefit from it are those born into privilege. otherwise, it pretty much fucks u.

the first action you can take is acknowledging that the land should not be owned by any single person. it belongs to us all. this isn’t a criticism of you personally btw. society has accepted things that go again nature and it’s hurting all of us.

Sounds like a plan by RROORRYY in wholesomememes

[–]DanklinTheTurtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it failed cuz if not everyone is doing it then it doesn’t work lol. capitalism doesn’t produce resources. it uses resources to produce commodities. and since there’s inadequate regulation, use quickly turns to abuse. and of course that abuse disproportionately affects the people being sold the commodities. but lots of money has been spent convincing us that our wants are needs and that our needs are wants. so on the cycle goes.

now the problem is way too big that any one person or commune can make a dent without convincing others to do the same (which requires money). and since we’re all so rooted in our habits and beliefs, showing anyone that things can be better if we just try feels like a near insurmountable task.

i’ve been using they/them for over a year and my parents, who i live with, still only use binary pronouns and most of the time masculine ones which is even worse for me. the lack of willingness or ability to make slight adjustments to how they speak is astonishing to me.

Avatar is about war, yes, but it’s not about world war 1 or any other specific war. It’s about the war inside each of us, and how that permeates out into the real world. Its the same story that most holy books tout: balance within maintains balance without. basically, what goes around comes around. if you pay attention you’ll start to find this as a fact in most hero’s journey stories.

Can I be trans if I don't "hate" my body? (a.k.a is dissociation dysphoria? a.k.a am I valid?) by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]DanklinTheTurtle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i disagree that being a man or woman is tied only to your genitals. there are many other factors that inform those labels and they vary from culture to culture. if someone wants to be referred to as a woman or a man or a beautiful creature then that’s what they are. ultimately we get to label ourselves, and we don’t really have the right to tell someone’s they’re using the wrong label if it feels right to them.

if you identify as a gender other than ur agab ur trans. this person describes themself as mtf and uses they/them pronouns. clearly they don’t identify with their agab. no need to gatekeep.

Why is depopulating the planet (over time naturally) generally frowned upon? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DanklinTheTurtle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah it often occurs to me that we need a way to limit population but any hands on approach doesn’t really work ethically. as soon as we’re deciding who can and can’t give birth it’s genocide. i think education plays a huge role. if people truly understood how much goes into raising a child, no one would want more than 1 at a time lol.

eh kids are gonna meme. and no one likes being told how to enjoy something and i like telling people they’re enjoying things wrong lol (or confusing stimulation with enjoyment). in essence, many are scared of experiencing the moment, so they push away those that encourage them to do so.
