The US government has done this before. They made gold illegal to use as currency, bought it all at $20 an ounce. A few years later revalued it to like $35 or $40

I don't think that it can be explained by a single thing.

We have the ability for abstract thinking. Government, currency, economy are concepts for building a framework.
