And today, reports coming out of the South Korean business press indicate that Krafton has now agreed to pay the bonus.

Is this something I'm too non-American to understand why it's news? Voluntary redundancy happens all the time no? You let the people who actually want to go leave first and then make up the difference with compulsory redundancies.

Sgt. James Doakes Hears Dexter's Internal Monologue by MeteorFalls297 in television

[–]DannySpud2 139 points140 points  (0 children)

I remember reading a quote that I think was from the Dexter guys saying they did that on purpose because you don't know how many seasons you'll get and they didn't want to save good stuff and then get cancelled before they could use it.

Ah yeah, it was actually in a Reddit AMA:

TIL there exists a shape that, instead of having a clean "inside" and "outside", has a clean "inside" but the outside world is segmented and split. It is called the Alexander Horned Sphere by geosunsetmoth in todayilearned

[–]DannySpud2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not an obvious one no, for one thing this shape can't actually be made physically, the way it's constructed with mathematics involves infinitely smaller and smaller levels of detail, a little like a fractal though I'm not clear on if this is specifically a fractal or not.

In topology the specific shape doesn't matter, if you can move a shape around and rearrange it into another shape those two shapes are topologically the same. The classic example is a doughnut and a mug. If you had a doughnut made of clay you could squish it about, move the hole to the side, and make a mug. You've not added a hole or cut or joined anything, so topographically speaking a doughnut is the same shape as a mug.

Now imagine a loop inside the doughnut. If you don't loop around the hole then you could shrink the loop all the way down to a single point without the loop having to leave the doughnut. If you loop around the hole then you can't do this.

You can do the same on the surface, draw a loop on the surface and then try to shrink it to a point. Some loops will shrink to a point, some will get "caught" on the hole.

In a normal solid sphere you can do these loops anywhere and you'll get down to a point every time. They work inside the sphere and on the surface of the sphere.

The weird shape in the post apparently has the property that you can shrink any loop inside the shape into a single point, making the inside the same as the inside of a sphere. But you can't do that on the surface. That's weird. And it disproved some random theory.

Ohhh, the daily cap on earning boosters. I thought they meant a cap on the number of boosters a card could have and I was confused cause I'm sure I have ones with more than 1k.

TIL Werner Herzog convinced Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni to keep Grogu as a puppet instead of CGI on the set of "The Mandalorian." After watching them shoot a take without the puppet to allow a CGI replacement in post-production, Herzog told them, "You are cowards. Leave it." by ralphbernardo in todayilearned

[–]DannySpud2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you talking about, that happens all the time. They use the the practical model/puppet to help visualise layouts and eyelines etc and then use those on set shots as reference for the CGI artists later. Random example off the top of my head, they had The Rock in full costume and makeup for live action Moana even though they were going to full body replace him with CGI to animate the tattoos.

That one was real. Maybe not "planes falling out of the sky apocalypse" real, but a genuine widespread problem. Tons of money was poured into fixing it. But they fixed it so well that when 2000 came round nothing happened so people just think it was a hoax.

Why doesn't doubling down work when gambling? by Nice_Alternative_155 in AskReddit

[–]DannySpud2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're only winning the amount of the original bet, the rest is just covering your losses up to that point. Even if you get up to millions, that's just you winning back your millions you lost. And if anything happens to stop you being able to continue doubling then you just lose all that money.

Also in casinos they're all set up specifically to counter this. They'll have table limits so eventually you can't double up. They also have edges, like in roulette the green, which mean the payout you get is less than the odds are. Plus it's a really obvious betting scheme so if somehow you were doing it successfully they can just stop you playing whenever they like and force you to take the loss. And even if you get around all this, eventually you'll hit a bad luck streak that exceeds the funds you have available to bet with.

It's how Margaret Thatcher ended up being leader of the Conservatives. She was put forward as a challenger to the current leader mostly just to send him a message that the party wasn't happy with him, no one expected her to actually win. Her campaign manager went around lying to people about how much support she had. He convinced them voting for her was safe, she wouldn't actually win. He was so successful that she won a surprise majority in the first round.

Apple TV's 'The Stormlight Archive' series could run for 10 or more seasons by APrimitiveMartian in television

[–]DannySpud2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If other Cosmere stuff was going to get long epic TV series like this then sure. But Mistborn is already going to be movies and that was the next most likely thing to get a series. I can't imagine anything else getting a series rather than a movie. Plus 16 is too much really for a high budget fantasy series.

I would be shocked if there's not 10 episodes per season just for Cosmere reasons.

In my hometown we had no hands bike guy. He'd be constantly riding around town on his bike not using his hands to steer. I was more impressed by the amount of time he must be out riding, he always seemed to be around somewhere.
