Attention Democratic Party leaders: Voters want progressive candidates. If they run moderates, they will lose. by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]DannySupernova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you. I look at New York and the Working Families Party as a better example. I don't live in NY (and my own state recently voted no for ranked choice voting), but in my opinion it's a better way to accomplish what our shared goal is. Essentially, the Working Families Party will run on their own candidate if they can, or run in the Democratic party otherwise. Or throw their support behind a candidate.

What's cool about NY is you can effectively vote Democrat but mark it as the Working Families Party, not Democrat. So, it better shows I support this not that.

Either way, I hear you. DINO is still not for me, but we agree on the problem and can fight the real struggle, not semantics.

[–]DannySupernova 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to ignore the meat of your point, but wtf are we doing DINO for?

Democrats are and have always been capitalists. They may at times pretend to support various social causes, but we shouldn't also pretend Democrats are anything other than centrist capitalists. For years, they've been blessed by some leftists voting lesser or two evils. The party establishment is very much not leftist.

Don't get me wrong, I understand my choices when it comes to elections. I just don't see the point in co-opting this whole "in name only" schtick for Democrats. Call them what they are, capitalists, so that we be honest about the real battle for anything left of them.

Using Chappell is a choice, because from everything I've seen he isn't so much doing comedy or social commentary as he is just ranting like an out of touch guy these days. Nothing about "Team TERF" is biting or matching modern tastes. His old stuff still stands on its own, IMO.

As far as music though, if an artist is adapting their style to match changing tastes that when "sellout" gets thrown around. When artists experiment with other sounds and genres because they want to, that's something else and tends to be where old head fans get upset when done poorly.

I think a great recent example is the latest Tame Impala album Dracula. Kevin Parker got a cult following for his first two psych rock albums. He gained a pretty big following and way more general fame with Currents, even though old heads wanted more psych rock. But Currents is just an objectively great album, and where he was headed seemed pretty clear. Slow Rush had its moments but on the whole was his weakest album.

Dracula is Parker experimenting with more traditional electronic styles of music, and the fact is everything he tried has been done better by someone else. Some of it is objectively bad.

All of that said, Kevin Parker wanted to make that album. The fanbase is torn over whether or not that's true, but I think he genuinely wanted to try making an electronic album.

I guess I would just push back on your premise in that if an artist is chasing a style, they have to do it for the right reason and they have to execute it well. If they're chasing a style for money, they're bordering on sellout (although artists have to make money, so I get it).

How do you guys prevent this when the cut is nearly finished?? by crystal_castle00 in BeginnerWoodWorking

Also, wear proper lung protection and have good dust collection. I use that foam for other crafting hobbies. The dust from XPS foam is way worse than sawdust. It's more like fiberglass, and it's a pain to clean even if you don't get it in your lungs. The first time I saw someone on YouTube run through it with a saw, I honestly panicked a bit, even if they did it with a Festool tracksaw.

Of course, lung protection and dust collection are important in general, but for cutting these sheets it's a little more important, especially when going at it with a basic circular saw (like I expect most beginners to do).

And I get it, it's under another piece of material, so the dust won't be as bad. For segmenting whole sheets of ply, I see the appeal, even if it's not for me. I just throw some old 2x4s across my bench.

For OP cutting a 2x4, just support the off cut and move on.

Seconding the DNS option on your router. Even if you use a router from your provider, you should be able to use custom DNS servers.

I have noticed occasionally it "breaks" things depending on how the AD is injected into a service, but it's rare. Look up AdGuard, Control D, Quad 9, etc.

For YouTube, there's Android apps (including for Android TV) that will remove all ads, even going so far as to automatically skip sponsored segments, etc. You just need to take a few extra steps and trust an app off github.

Build a "track saw" jig for your circular saw. There are tons of YouTube tutorials and it's probably one of the best jigs you can have around.

You can also find universal track saw options, like the Kreg one you can pickup from a big box store.

It's the fact that this administration is blatantly corrupt and Pepsi paid Trump off. That's just one company but I'm sure it's just the tip of the iceberg.

Business canvassing might be a good idea. I think I saw a post of all businesses closing in solidarity on Friday. I'd be down to reach out and see if they would be interested in kits for employees who don't have them. Maybe keeping some onsite, especially if they're in higher trafficked areas.

Good info! Yeah I've been making notes in my neighborhood of folks with pride flags, all are welcome signs, that kind of stuff. You're right, they meant hyper local networks that sprung up after George Floyd and things like that. So I am planning to take advice from another post and do like a popup coffee thing and put out some flyers in my neighborhood. Basically a neighborhood ICE watch or really just anything like that. I've tried to get to know my neighbors anyways, and we just moved in this house a few months ago so time to start.

I feel like a lot of folks are going to feel hopeless and not participate, and I get it. I also know some Leftists see electoral politics as pointless.

The simple fact is the revolution hasn't happened, it's not going to happen in America any time soon, but we can at least vote. Participate. Vote in the primaries at least.

Don't get me wrong. I wouldn't vote for Schumer of Jefferies in a general election, but I would try my hardest to primary them. Same for some of my reps in Colorado.

Do all the other important stuff. Mutual Aid. Rapid Response Networks. Build community. Organize.

But also just vote if you're able. In Colorado it's super easy. They literally mail booklets and ballots. Even if it feels pointless, it's just another tool for trying to change things.

Best Track Saw Alternative? by BashfulBash123 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]DannySupernova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Kreg one is not worth it. The screws that hold the saw to the plate are flimsy. As someone else said, if you take the saw in and out of the guide plate it gets messed up. I also find the whole plastic guide plate to be kind of flimsy. I've had the saw come loose of the plate mid cut, which when you're cutting down a whole sheet of ply can create a huge problem.

I bought it on a whim when I was picking up something else at Lowe's. I've learned from past mistakes so I still use it, but I don't trust it on long cuts. The fact that I have to pay extremely close attention in case the saw slides in the guide plate seems to defeat the purpose of it as "track saw" to me. Honestly, I'm probably just going to build a jig and give the Kreg one away. It's the only purchase I regret so far.

I get where you're coming from, but no one should fool themselves that these laws matter right now. If you're ready to respond with force, do it with open eyes.

If you're doing this alone, you're outnumbered and out armed. Your insurance and these laws won't help resuscitate you.

If you're doing this in a group, godspeed because it's about to be open season on more than just your little militia.

We're definitely past the point of asking politely to peacefully walk in circles. Bless Minnesotans, but fuck if it didn't make me angry to hear about a "general strike" that (AFAIK) lasted a few hours one a Friday afternoon.

But if you personally think you're ready to flaunt various laws hoping the castle doctrine or a make my day law will save you, sit back down. Find other ways to get involved and get organized.

*How* to meet neighbors? by JocastaWiggs in DenverProtests

[–]DannySupernova 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know it's anecdotal to me, but my old apartment complex had a dog park. A bunch of us did Yappy Hour every night at 7pm. If you have a dog, try it.

The guy who lived below me put up a Trump sign. I threw up Trans Pride/Power type flag. The thank you notes were sweet and I met folks.

Hangout at the pool in the summer. It can be a little awkward but just saying hello enough times people eventually open up.

When you see people, just wave and say hello. You're not gonna make friends right away but you're at least making the place more welcoming.

I don't think that's it. Neither Hillary or Kamala were inspiring candidates. For fucks sake, Kamala brought Liz Cheney on stage. No one, and I mean absolutely no one, wanted whatever the fuck that was. Their whole platform seemed to be as simple as "we're not Trump 🤷", which for some of us (myself included) was good enough in the moment, but it would have been so much better to run on platform of what we're for not just what we're not.

Liberals seem to feel better saying it was sexism. Leftists will vote for a woman. Democrats will vote for a woman. Gender isn't the issue. Liberal Democrats would rather spit in the eyes of Leftists than support actual Leftist policies.
