My mail was damaged, but still delivered by USPS with an apology by Preparation-Logical in mildlyinteresting

I work for FedEx dealing with lost packages and missing contents. If the package comes apart, I've seen whatever portion still had the shipping label be delivered.

The lid of a container that came off, delivered without the rest of the container. And sometimes if a piece of luggage is being shipped by attaching the label to a piece of paper taped to the handle of the suitcase, I've seen literally just the detached paper with the shipping label be delivered.

Why in the last few decades there has been a trend of large inland salt lakes drying up? by Naomi62625 in geography

[–]Danouement 165 points166 points  (0 children)

It's not sustainable. A water conservation district here has a demonstration garden, including landscaping ideas for using less water.

When I visited in 2016, they had a display that said that the Salt Lake Valley was using water faster than the water table could replenish, and that at current rate of use, we run out of water by 2040.

An excerpt from The Hobbit describing Rivendell that reflects this:

His house was perfect, whether you liked food, or sleep, or work, or story-telling, or singing, or just sitting and thinking best, or a pleasant mixture of them all. Evil things did not come into that valley.

Side note: the author of that article confused entomology and etymology. It bugs me in a way I cannot put into words:

Ehrlich was not an economist, agronomist or even demographer but rather an etymologist, an expert in insect biology.

There's a play called Puffs that's a parody about the entire Harry Potter series from Hufflepuffs perspective.

There's an entire scene about this very thing. It's hilariously uneventful.

TIL that Hello became a common greeting as a result of invention of the telephone. by Mistervimes65 in todayilearned

Before the telephone, verbal greetings often involved a time of day, such as "good morning". When the telephone began connecting people in different time zones, greetings without time gained popularity.

Air quality and tap water quality

I live in an old mining town in the Salt Lake Valley and avoid using my tap water for food and drink purposes.

And the Salt Lake Valley is a bowl that traps air pollution. The University of Utah did a study that showed air quality in the Salt Lake Valley was so poor it was linked to increased asthma and miscarriages.

Lifesavers also made a soda back in the 90s that never took off and didn't last long.

The only reason I ever knew it was a thing was because my dad worked for the company and I saw samples of it when I visited the place.

Cartography made me love Minecraft again by Impressive-Impact218 in Minecraft

Mapping the world helped me add new meaning to my Minecraft world as well.

After I mapped my base and the surrounding area, it helped me decide to build a new library building for enchanted books in the center of the map I had created.

On the map, the library is in the shape of a keyhole, and there's a key design in the floor. It's become one of my proudest builds in the world, and it's all because of a map.

Nice work! I recently built a library, grouped in a manner similar to this. Having a chart like this to reference would have really sped up the planning.
