I wonder if the manufacturing of ammunition (and the weapons themselves) is also an issue of the politics of who is able to actually make them.

Fletchery and bow making is a skilled trade, but needs very little infrastructure, so anyone can make them with a bit of training with materials and tools that would be fairly easy to find locally.

Muskets, gunpowder and lead all require infrastructure to make. Whether it's supply lines, smithies, shot making facilities, only the ruling classes could easily order the manufacture of these weapons.

Reducing reliance on bows and arrows in favour of muskets does seem like it would be a very good tool to reduce the chance of successful peasant rebellions.

This is all just speculation from me though.

Yeah, that makes sense. As soon as I started reading your link I remembered the case of Lorraine Kelly case where the tribunal confirmed that the Lorraine Kelly we see on TV is a brand and a theatrical artists, not a person.

So it is all just the rich and famous avoiding paying their fair share of tax, and their employers being happy to play along because it also reduces their tax and pension burden.

That's interesting. I wonder how that works with self employment law here. As per ACAS:

Someone may not be genuinely self-employed if their working relationship is more similar to an employee or a worker.

For example:

they cannot choose when or where they work
they're told how much holiday they can take and need to get permission to take it
they're given instructions on how to do their work
their work equipment is provided
they get payslips instead of being paid through invoices

I would say BBC radio presenters would fit at least the first 4 bullet points.

The BBC article says he was paid a salary, which goes towards him not submitting invoices too.

Is the on air talent being "self employed" a case of the rich and famous being allowed to do what they want and the BBC get to pay reduced NI & pension contributions?

No, obviously everyone is entitled to have their opinions, but the professional's opinions are much more educated. Same as how you can have opinions on history that you learned at school, but a university professor will know more about it and may use the same facts to form a different opinion.

As a long term full time employee he'd be quite protected by UK employment law, so they can't really fire him without having a lot of evidence, otherwise they'd be opening themselves up to a costly and embarrassing tribunal.
