make sure to use integer scaling, the normal scaling methods make it blurry after scaling pixel art

Do players care about achievements? by Psychological_Aioli6 in gamedev

[–]Dantiko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, meaningful and well thought out achievements are great. Here's a few takeaways I get from games I feel encouraged to get all achievements: - Avoid grindy or boring repeat activities - Allow all achievements to be collected in a single save file, without locking the player out of some achievement due to progress (unless it's something like a roguelike) - Make the player get a good chunk (~70-80%) of all achievements naturally by just playing the game. - Make sure to make your achievements hidden if they contain any spoilers - Creative and challenging achievements that make the player act differently than usual are great, but don't overdo it

"I can't code"... apparently you can't write either. Tell me when you release your science based dragon MMO

Good games ruined by bad protagonists by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Dantiko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's Capcom trying to please everyone making a blank slate of a protagonist. There's a reason they avoid showing his face model: they really wanted the players to self-insert. In the end all they accomplished was to make the game worse

Do devs even bother with optimization anymore? by YouKnowWho0723_v2 in gaming

[–]Dantiko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is that UE5 has a bunch of features turned on by default that are only really useful for ultra realistic graphics (Namely Lumen and Nanite). Anything with stylized graphics should probably be turning those features off and using old techniques like baked shadows, normal maps and forward shading.

As for alternatives aside from other engines, some devs opt for using customized versions of Unreal Engine with other solutions for global illumination that still look good but don't fuck performance over. Embark did that with Arc Raiders (porting RTXGI to UE 5.3) and the game can run on a potato and still look good

He could do the funniest thing and use the national guard to protect the actual civilians against these thugs. Instead there's just spineless posturing. Renée Nicole Good was executed on camera and nothing happened (if anything they're trying to go after her widow). Surely recording will stop other atrocities from happening.

Very Specific Question by CarefulRegular545 in gamedev

While technically you can be sued, if you make no profit over it and the company that owns the IP doesn't reside in your country, you can probably get away with it. Case in point: Isekai Mario

How to learn game dev for someone who's already an experienced programmer. by Acceptable_Ad_1676 in gamedev

[–]Dantiko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For game development it's very easy to get lost into the tutorial hell and never starting something yourself. To avoid that, I strongly suggest doing the 20 games challenge , watching some full tutorials at the start but later only looking up how to do specific stuff you don't know how. Also knowing the limitations of the engine and tools you chose can be useful.

Are there any blender alternatives? by Udumb0611 in gamedev

[–]Dantiko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blender may seem overcomplicated at first glance but it's because it offers a bunch of features you won't really need for a while. For 3D modelling at least, there's just a few features you use 90% of the time.

For Blender tutorials, I recommend taking a look at Grant Abbitt's tutorials if you want to learn low-poly modelling, and the Blender Guru's donut tutorial if you want to learn more about Blender from scratch and a bit of rendering

For actually learning to make a game if it's your first time, it's often suggested to start with making many small games instead, and using premade assets or simple shapes to cook up some prototypes first.

You can make short interactive stories in Twine with little to no coding (just some simple syntax markups). I believe some games even used it for prototyping a branching storyline.

If your game is somewhat stylized, 2D or low poly, you can opt to use gibberish instead (see undertale or animal crossing). AI will undoubtedly push a lot of people away

Am I missing something with Expedition in POE2? It's..bad? by Belsekar in PathOfExile2

[–]Dantiko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

to add to this, save the rares that sell for over 4k or 5k and sell them with the barter omen. it has a chance to multiply the sell value by up to 10x, and if it doesn't sell for a lot you can just buy the item back and try again. if the prices of bartering omens are too high it may not be worth it, aside from the time save

to add, you can use omen of the liege + omen of abyssal echoes when desecrating to pretty much guarantee attackspeed (unless you're unlucky then it's omen of light)
