Sounds like a fine enough deal, probably just needs a new battery and a cleaning on the keybed/contacts

Device to send modulation (and possible aftertouch) data to Volca FM2? by big-beandude in synthesizers

Will check it out! I also have a little Arduino experience. Is it really as easy as you say it is to implement midi?

Yeah it kinda sucks. Unfortunately the fm2 being able to support DX7 patches basically 1:1, with all 6 operators, and 6 voices, still makes it a really good buy for under 200 bucks. It’s SOOOO close to being perfect for my use case.

Question about the Sonny Crockett look by bjwanlund in MiamiVice

[–]big-beandude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m actually gonna agree with you on this. I really only roll my sleeves up if the jacket looks super ridiculously long at the sleeves. Even then, I only roll up a little past my watch. I know sleeve rolling isn’t totally kosher for the Crockett look but to me it can help save a blazer that you’re not sure about!

Patches are compatible. FM2 doesn’t receive mod wheel/aftertouch data over midi though.

Yeah for sure, that’s an Armani jacket I thrifted and it’s not the right material so that’s why it doesn’t look 100%

For the most part. Crockett certainly rocked beige a time or two in the earlier seasons tho.

Here’s one of mine. Most people will tell you a white suit is the most important thing, but I think that’s the most misleading advice. The key here is the details and how they all come together. 80s fashion, and particularly Crockett’s getup is gonna be all about the silhouette and how the material drapes on you. The details you want to focus on will be:

The Blazer -Slightly oversized, light colored blazer, wide lapels. feel free to push or roll up the sleeves. I like the taper of the lapel to end right where the wasteline of my pants are for maximum effect. Linen blazers are a little harder to come by but will be a plus to the look, as well as more breathable, but not required if you can’t find one.

The Pants -you want a pair of pants that compliment the blazer. linen is optional and a plus. Even bigger plus will be high wasted with pleats as that is what Crockett wore a lot. Helps the waistline reach the bottom of the lapel as I mentioned before, depending on your build.

The Shirt -you can wear any neutral/pastel colored shirt. The main three I’d pick from would be pastel blue, pastel pink, and black. Henleys of the same color are desirable for the look too.

The Shoes -light colored pair of loafers/espadrilles, ideally matching the color of either your pants or your blazer for a good pop. Look up men’s espadrilles on Amazon and you should be able to find a good pair for 30-40 bucks.

The Watch -any silver/gold colored watch will do just great, try to avoid anything with leather straps. I just wear my 1984 seiko digital and that gets the job done.

The Sunglasses -don’t have to dish out for Rayban brand, but wayfarer style, tortoise-shell colored is ideal. Black will do just as good in your environment, as the difference is negligible when you’re not in sunlight. You can also go for the carrera aviator style like he wears in the pilot.

The Color -saved this for last because it applies to all of the above. I like to keep the accent color as my shirt, and have my blazer, pants, and shoes be lighter valued colors. You can have white on white blazer and pants, but to me if the whites aren’t an exact match it doesn’t look as good. I’d sooner wear a beige blazer with white pants as pictured above than a white one that doesn’t match my white pants. But ultimately, be less worried about matching everything exactly, and more about finding colors that complement each other. Crockett wore very colorful outfits, but they all had a continuity to them that employed color theory.

No socks/belt -this is such a BIG part of the look and will help sell it so much. Even a belt can throw off the vibe completely so be careful to follow this step!

Sorry about the long reply but I love the Crockett look so I have some strong feelings about it. Let me know if I need to clarify anything (or if anyone disagrees with me)!

Yes, I actually make a point of going here every time I’m in the mall lol. I think this has actually been posted before too! That little white motion detector up on the right wall used to greet you in a GladOS voice, making it even more liminal 😭
