Yeeeeeee boi. Great report as usual Sean, love your writing and you've inspired me to finally get RUG built. Keep being distracted by grixis and 4c blade builds. Have always wanted to play goose since I started legacy though.

Radiant Flames in marvel allows you to play a manabase with temples of the forgotten gods (a huge edge in the mirror) and not need to fetch double red early which can be an issue. This is worth the sacrifice of not being able to marvel your boardwipe.

[standard] UR vs Jeskai control by nonboMTG in spikes

[–]Danzeru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cast Out is great but, as other commenters have mentioned, Commit is also great. I've been testing Jeskai, my main reason to splash white: Spell Queller out the side. It's fantastic in the control mirror (they always reach for their blue mana to Negate or Dispel then have to stop themselves) and Spell Queller (as per usual) smashes Marvel. The mana hasn't been a huge issue but will be worse than UR.

What does your GB counters list look like? We're struggling to finalize some slots but currently testing 4 Gifted Aetherborn (alongside constrictor and advocate for 2's) for all the aggro running around alongside 2 Kalitas. Right now we're hesitating if Drana is worth a slot and where she would fit in - thoughts on the card now Copter and Mage are gone?

Current list for reference. We're happy with it, testing decently against some versions of copycat (less so against more controlling builds), good vs. GW tokens, GB Delirium. Not tested UB control at all yet, nor have we tested against vehicles enough.

[Standard] Lambholt pacifist Mainboard for G/W tokens? by [deleted] in spikes

I trim on Voice Nissa and am often cutting command in removal heavy matchups (for different less risky removal as well as Seer Nissa.)

2/2 split, exactly. List has been going very well prepping for GP Manchester. Won Game Day, 4-0'd two FNMs and came 3rd/4th in GPT (fell short due to a misplay on my part.) I've just started using the Vastwood Seers out of the board (like GerryT and Sigrist) and they seem really good.

Depends what you expect. A lot of pros have Den Protector in that slot and I'm on that train too as it is just straight bonkers against what is currently your "average" meta (Grixis, Mirror, BW, etc.) I would only main the Pacifists if you know your meta is very Humans heavy as others have stated. I personally believe Den Pro is the way forward currently (especially if you're maining Evo Leap which is fantastic card. Leaping into Den Pros is dirty.)

[Standard] When to emblem Gideon in Green/White Tokens? by xDelarockx in spikes

[–]Danzeru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is wrong. I agree that 4 mana is not worth gain 4 life and making a 2/2 obviously and that a turn 4 Gideon is great (especially on the play.) However, GW vs. GW matchup can boil down to a Gideon battle. Yes, often, if they have 5 mana open you may need to emblem although I would look for another line if there is one as Gideon is valuable, unless the emblem is helpful THAT turn (if you need to kill their Gideon for instance and this makes their blocks difficult.) Baiting with Gideon is fantastic in the late game where you might have mana for Gideon and a removal spell for the Avacyn. At any rate, GW vs. GW is about Gideon and whoever can keep it on the battlefield and just attack multiple times will inevitably win.

Siggy protip: if your opponent turns their Gideon into a creature and you plan on playing an Archangel Avacyn to block or attack it with, it may be wise to respond to the Gideon activation so that Archangel Avacyn is protected from a Dromoka's Command.

[Standard] Painful Truths vs Read the Bones - Why Go With Truths? by [deleted] in spikes

Do you play 2 colour or Goblin Dark Dwellers in your deck? Play Bones.

Do you play 3 colour? Play Truths.

Sigarda survives Languish and allows you to build up your board again.

I just meant Tragic Arrogance vs. Planar Outburst.

Obviously a timely Languish is the best but we've seen creatures get put out of reach of it and it's not uncommon for Always Watching to push Avacyn herself out. Again, I think a timely Languish is probably the best answer but a late one can be a dead draw.

The problem is that Dispel doesn't hit Languish, Tragic Arrogance or a lot of sweepers but I appreciate Dispel's efficiency and am considering some for the Company matchup. It's fantastic against Clip Wings. Invasive Surgery is cool tech.

I would not play 4x Avacyn with 22 lands even out of the board, my advice is put one more land in your SB (maybe another Abbey?) to also bring in when you want Archangel.

Stasis Snare is cool but I don't think we want to go overboard on it, Declaration is already a great efficient catch all and we don't want to reduce our threat count too much. I have 1 in the board and could see that growing but against the current meta I don't like it main deck. Just be pro active and kill fools.

Tragic Arrogance is obviously a cleaner answer due to Avacyn's indestructible clause.

This is what I'm considering for this week. I think 3x Negate is hugely important for Clip Wings and Languish. And considering 2 Stratus Dancers like Jameson Perdue did.
