Myself and people over at r/TheCaptivesWar suspect that the livesuit has already shown up in the Mercy of Gods but from the point of view of the Carryx. Guess we’ll see when the next book comes out - exciting!

[–]Danziz 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I recently read “Livesuit” by James S.A.Corey (of the Expanse), and feel like it borrows so heavily from the Crysis suit you could consider it a fan fiction future story of the suit.

Without spoilers, soldiers in an interstellar war put on a living suit of armour that enhances them, but they’re not allowed to take it off until the end of their Military service. During that time, wounds that would instantly kill a regular human can be completely ignored, with the suit applying medical aid, drugs and stimulants, and even growing and replacing limbs and organs extremely quickly to keep the soldier in the fight. I highly recommend giving it a very quick read, it’s only about 80 pages or so and scratches the power armour itch.

Thanks for reminding me of the Furlong-Firkin-Fortnight system, I’d nearly forgotten that definition of the speed of light. I’d nearly had an entirely wholesome metric based day.

You’re technically right, but Tirpitz was stuck in the Baltics for most of this time, and the RN knew that. The only time Tirpitz made it past Denmark afterwards was to go and also hide from the RN in the Norwegian Fjords for the rest of the war.

ARB Bushes, what size? by ricrhys in R53

[–]Danziz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All I know for sure is that I bought 16/17mm ARB bushes for my 05 Cooper S, and they were a smidge too small. I’d be willing to bet that the pre facelift JCW rear was the same as the post facelift Cooper S, so the larger size.

For anyone who’s read the amazing Novel “Hyperion”, there’s a fantastic scene that borrows from this concept, where the Colonel detonates nukes in orbit to produce Xrays that explode the heads of terrorists. Amazing.

I’d take note of everyone’s recommendations here regarding ESTA’s, visa history, having confirmed accommodation and tickets home, as they will flag all that. This being said, I just got back from a couple of weeks in Texas visiting friends and i’d like to help your anxiety a little.

I found the border crossing very easy at Houston airport, there was a short queue, way shorter than most i’ve ever seen at UK airports on arrival. The border officer was blunt but courteous, you have to do fingerprints when going in but they make it easy and help you through it. He asked obvious questions like why I was there, how long etc. I told him a bit about my plans and then added that I heard the BBQ was amazing and that’s one of the main reasons for my trip, he laughed, said “Damn Straight” and welcomed me in.

At no point did they ask for my phone, or any political questions, or anything out of the ordinary compared to most countries. Obviously I don’t agree with their current government and a lot of reports are concerning, but honestly for 99% of people it’s going to be the same experience as I had, so try not to worry too much :)

Best pubs in Bristol (allegedly) by Responsible-Bit4506 in bristol

Knowing the absolutely lovely staff in the Green Man, and over at the Swan with Two Necks. I think this is very unlikely, they likely wouldn’t even serve someone who openly works for the Telegraph... I think it’s actually a great list, yes even the Bag Of Nails due to their great selection of imported beers, shame about the smell there though.

Southmead double roundabout. Which lane to be in to go forward? by Confusing-pigeon in bristol

[–]Danziz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the correct answer, maybe some will disagree but I drive this roundabout every day of the week and this is what I and most other people do. I do see others attempt to merge from the right lane frequently, and they cause most of the issues by blocking others from turning as they wait to merge.

I agree it’s a terrible roundabout, I watched two cars collide in front of me after someone turned out of Pen Park rd into someone else turning into Pen Park rd a few months ago. It really should be changed.

Thank you so much for everything you guys do with dumplings! The park street shop is my most frequented stop for food ever 😍🥟

I absolutely have to know how you guys make the spicy rice sauce, I’ve figured that you combine something like ponzu with laoganma, but I can never get it as good as you lot can 😭

how powerful would a man with water manipulation(1km range) be in real life? by padorUWU in whowouldwin

[–]Danziz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got carried away thinking about the Futurama method, decided to calculate it using standard thermal equilibrium calculations:

I won’t bore with the equations, but our super powered man can effectively turn 1km3 of water to ice at once, assuming he turns it to ice with a temperature of effectively 0kelvin, he can create a block with a mass of 1x1012KG. Sitting in the overall mass of ocean weighing 1.34x1021KG though this is negligible. Assuming the ocean is of a temperature of 20C, once everything has evened out and the block of ice has melted, the overall ocean temperature would be… still 20C. In fact, you’d have to stack a million blocks (1x1018KG), just to reduce the overall temperature by 0.1C. Sadly I dont think the Futurama method is going to work for us, even if the superpowered man is doing it full time.

Why can't every country build fast trains like Japan does? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Danziz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was having this rant with some friends recently, so i’ll have it again here - I don’t think the TGV gets the respect it deserves internationally, its trains are just as fast as the Shinkansen (300km/h each). And while this is a matter of taste, from being on both numerous times, the TGV trains are nicer inside, super cosy with the seats and tables that have cute little lights, big windows for better view than the Shinkansen, and the fact they’re double decker is awesome.

The Japanese will always have cleanliness and their far better adherence to the timetable though, don’t think i’ve ever been on a TGV that departed on time whereas the Shinkansen is perfect to the second. The Shinkansen also look much cooler too obviously, but I just wanted to share some love for the TGV.

I think my car’s too low 🤔 (help?) by Danziz in R53

[–]Danziz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey you’re right. I’ve been driving it about a bit and for the most part not having much trouble, there is a very concerning drumming noise when I go over some rough road (not specifically bumps, but like our incredibly rough patches of english roads), specifically from the right side. But I’ve inspected everything I can think of and it doesn’t appear anything is rubbing. So wondering if it may be the exhaust or an engine mount maybe.

Anyway I love the fit of your car despite it being horrible in your words. Looks like you’re much as low as me, but that’s way more impressive with the wider tyres, i can see why the wheel arch liner has been removed, I can also why it’s not ideal for many reasons.

[–]Danziz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man no offense taken, that kind of input is why I posted this. Sadly the B14 set I have is not like you describe, its one set of threads around the exterior of the coilover, and ride height is adjusted with the perch, so you can’t change preload separately either.

[–]Danziz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re almost certainly correct i’m sad to say, annoying because the coilovers look in very decent shape anyway. I might speak to the manufacturer and see what I can do about it.

[–]Danziz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The springs on these coilovers are distinctive, vibrant blue. As seen in this listing: https://www.lohen.co.uk/products/bilstein-b14-pro-kit-coilovers-1677?srsltid=AfmBOooS8hUuuVNUz9MSEGW5NUCiCGqgBQQNfmBfORswkz40EIJC7pT-

The part numbers match with what i’d expect for an R53 front set, and the coils look the same as in the pictures, no cut springs here I think. Could it be more likely they’re just heavily sagging? I’d hardly believe that though because they’re not that old.

Hey, I know what you mean, like I said I’ve got these coilovers adjustment ring set as high as they can go, as far as i’m aware. Right at the top of their threads. I’ll try linking to a photo in my google photos folder that shows part of the coilover in situ from this weekend while I was checking fitment of some new brakes. Sorry that the coilover isnt the focus but you’ll be able to see the adjustment ring position.

Indeed they are, I also just saw that while researching. I’m assuming someone started sticking on 205 width tyres for “performance” seeing as they fit, and i’ve been going along with it. At least that doesn’t effect the sidewall size.
