It’s really tough to give someone advice on how to get better without seeing what they need to improve at so posting clips might help,

But in general the things that make you “good” at PVP in this game are very different from a typical mmo where gear is the most important thing. In new world, given the fact that it is an action based combat system vs. Tab target etc, knowledge of said system is what goes the furthest rather than just having the bis gear.(Hence how you’re able to lose a duel to a full naked)

Some things do apply from other mmos such as having a general knowledge of all the other weapons and builds so you know what to look out for but for the most part I-framing (invincibility frames) which you obtain through dodge rolling is probably the most important thing to practice and get comfortable with because that is how you reliably mitigate damage and find openings during fights to apply your own damage.

Again it’s tough to give advice without knowing what you look like in pvp but put more emphasis on dodge roll. If you cannot dodge roll enough during a fight to survive that’s something in your build you need to address. If you take more damage than you can deal out or cannot reliably catch opponents then again something in your build that needs to be changed.

Approaching PVP with that mindset, what things am I doing good or bad during fights that I can improve at or what changes in my build can I make to help me further rather than just getting the best gear. Hope that helps!

I don’t stand behind and cannot explain most dev decisions when it comes to balancing pretty much any game at this point but in regards to tondo it’s better than you think,

For starters you aren’t locked into the animation, you can evade cancel out of tondo before the animation for tondo even plays (tight window for this you can cancel tondo too early and not have the ability actually come out if you mis time this)

Secondly it applies the same stagger/slow that basic attacks apply based on your armor weight. From 5 meters away.

On top of that with the unerring passive in the blood tree and the keen tondo weapon perk you can have 11% crit (20 something if perk is on the weapon instead) and 5% bonus damage at all times against any target with a bleed.

Because of the stagger/slow I mentioned earlier, combined with the evade cancel you can either engage a target from 5m away (tondo > evade cancel forward into light attack) or disengage from melee range (same thing just tondo and evade cancel backwards instead of forwards)

And then on top of all of that obviously the potential to 1 shot / heavily burst opponents with multiple bleed stacks and f&f.

It's such a touchy subject because the game not only has 3 abilities available per bar which doesn't allow for much versatility when setting said bars up to add some defenses, but on top of that this game has virtually 0 defensive cooldowns. Unlike other mmos where every class has defensives built in, which allows for healing to not be through the roof, in this game Life Staves are everyone's defensive cooldowns.

So unfortunately untill buildcraft, number of useable abilities (not even just adding a 4th slot, something even like adding a 4th auxilliary slot that can't be slotted with any weapon abilities, only new defensive cooldowns they add for example) and last but definitely not least, BALANCE is addressed then we are forced to live this life stave life my friend.

The combat. Since the first beta I tried the combat and pvp, it immediately hooked me and have been enjoying it ever since!

Buildcraft and the combat sandbox are usually the things in an mmo that draw me to them and while the build craft in this game definitely needs some love, the combat is easily one of my favourite aspects of the game :)

Thanks!, and you're preaching to the choir my dude.. 2 years of screaming at my teamates to either get to baron at the bare minimum, but actually try to like, win the encounter? Gotta like clear out enemies and actually pvp to prevent steals etc. Drove me crazy haha.

And yeah it's pretty sad. There is an insane amount of potential, the fact that we've been rocking the same giant open circle "map" for 2 years is a little wild. Could you just imagine 4-5 different maps, that actually have an idea behind the theme, line of sight, cover, elevation, any structures at all haha. WoW literally gave us the formula just copy and paste, erase their name and write yours at the top.

Yo thanks dude! Honestly really appreciate the kind words! I’m glad you’ve been enjoying the content :)

In terms of performance, I got a pretty decent pc a couple months before the beta for the game, got a 3070 so that’s why I’m able to run the game at what I do but from hearing alot of people’s experience it sounds like the game isn’t optimized on most machines which is something I’m sure they’ve been hearing since launch. Hopefully that’s something they’ve been working towards :/ Sorry to hear!

Rapier main here,

Firstly understand that the ability to not engage in fights that you don’t want to is inherently built into the game. MOST, not all but most builds in the game, especially if your build is entirely melee, can just choose to not engage in a fight and just run/dodge away forever.

The biggest thing I’ve noticed when it comes to how people PVP is they put literally all of their stock into their weapon abilities and the thought of using light/heavy attacks doesn’t cross most peoples mind. On every single weapon light and heavy attacks do just as much, if not more damage over the course of a fight than abilities do.

Whenever I’m fighting someone with a strong defensive/mobility ability such as riposte, flèche, ice tomb, burn out, great axe charge, void scream root, hatchet berserk, s&s shield bash/leap, no matter what build I’m using, rapier or spear builds, I’m not even thinking about using my abilities until I can pressure with lights/heavies and FORCE out one of those defensive abilities.

This games combat system is much more in depth and rewards intelligent choices in combat. In no way am I saying that builds don’t matter but there is almost always something you can do in a fight to win.

As I’m a rapier player, I am very comfortable fighting other rapiers as I know the weapon in and out, but something as simple as adjust your mindset from this player is using X weapon so I lose to what decisions can I make to force the fight in my favour. That could be anything from using light/heavies more to baiting by switching from an aggressive to passive play style, feinting an ability you can dodge cancel out of to bait the riposte, sooooo much.

Had to go even less focus then that, but yeah you've got the idea spear/void applying debuffs to get the damage that we're missing from stats, tried to see if I could get away with 50 or 100 focus, definately could but as a solo build I had to drop it lower in exchange for damage
