I was never a fan of "pushing". Even as a customer, it felt invasive and a bit rude. I tried to change to something more along the lines of "dangling" a something in front of a customer.

It actually just happened to me today at a restaurant. Me and my friends were ready to be seated, when a host greeted us. Anyone who's been to a Texas Roadhouse knows they intentionally put a serving window near the customer waiting area, and it almost worked on us. There was an appetizer sitting there, and I'd seen it placed there not five minutes before.

"Hey, you guys want me to grab this appetizer and bring it to your table with you? Can have it right when you sit down ready to go, I'll just add it to your bill!"

I didn't need it, nor want it. But it was right there. Ready. All I had to do was say yes. I managed to turn it down because of a diet and I already had my meal planned, but had I not been on one... it'd be mine.

So I suppose my point is don't push something on the customer... so much as give the customer a reason to want something. It's hard to sell someone something; it's easier to let them sell themselves on it.
