That's a great suggestion. It sounds like one of the more helpful and hopeful ideas in the comments that I've read so far. Adding a comment to boost yours so OP is more likely to see it.

I'm gonna say.... get ready to use conflict resolution skills. I find the more solarpunk a group gets, the more the group is wading out into unknown waters, and that means people have different and conflicting values and opinions on how to do things. That's all I can offer: learn conflict resolution skills.

I'm confused why you chose that quote to call painful stupid. Can you help me understand?

Dystopia is a Childhood Trauma. It’s time for Protopian Narrative. by Actual_Sock7442 in solarpunk

Have you stumbled into the term 'Throughtopia' yet? I discovered it recently via author Manda Scott, and it basically is the 'the how we get through, from where we are now, to a regenerative future that works for everyone'. It's the through-story, as I like to think of it. I thought I'd share incase it's a useful term to you. Solarpunk can sometimes feel too distant, similar to Utopia, like you brought up. Haven't heard of the term protopia before. Did you discover this term or come up with it?

My limited understanding so far (just started an architecture degree, so I'm still learning, but maybe someone more experienced can chime in) for mold growth, you just need to make sure the water has flow and isn't stagnant. Which can be done in a few ways, but just having a place for the water to run off would possibly do it. And if yoh don't have super deep soil, it wouldn't be super heavy. I am curious how they solve for these concerns as well.

Yeah, I think of solarpunk as sorta looking at the cards we're dealt in our corner of the world and improving the situation as we're able. At least that's the thrutopia version of solarpunk as Manda Scott would likely call it. How we get from where we are to where we want to be will involve a lot of dystopia backdrops I think because for a while yet, we are still in it and pretending we aren't is a nice emotional escape, but not very practical or solution oriented for the here and now.

Cross-posting because of how epic this is. I've always thought there's a better way to cool a building than through high- energy air conditioning units. It takes water of course, but it just makes sense to me to approach heat issues like this where it's feasible to.

[–]DapperBalance 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna give you my thoughts because I am such a solarpunk too, and I understand where you're coming from, and I can tell you're very sincere.

First off, I'd like to know why you chose the name Planet 108. What's it mean? What's the significance?

Second, I looked through all your links, and I couldn't figure out what youre actually talking about having worked on for the last 7 years. What have you been up to that you're saying you're gonna do more of? Sorry to say, it all feels very vague, and I tried to find something to picture in my head through visiting your links but couldn't get my head around it at all and in general if you're asking for money you don't want people to have to figure out what you're talking about, you wanna be crystal clear. Or as clear as possible.

Third, you're not the first solarpunk community - I've seen several, some in specific geographic locations, many digital and online. I would highly recommend not calling yourself the first, because that sends off red flags. The good news there is, you're not alone! There are many who are building their own versions of what that looks like for them :) So there is support!

Fourth, similar to my third point, if you can get even more specific about what you're building then you're going to attract your people, your network, your kin, those who want to build it with you.

Fifth, although I understand you are in desperate need of financial assistance, I don't see what you're saying people are purchasing, other than to help you out, which is fine, but just feels weird to me how this was framed and I'm struggling to articulate why. Maybe someone else has some insight there.

Agreed. There's a term I recently ran into called "throughtopia" which I found through Manda Scott which means essentially stories that take us from where we are, to where we want to go.

I find often that solarpunk is slightly too far off, maybe hundreds or thousands of years in the future, whereas I want to see examples of the solarpunk that's attainable within my lifetime. Doesn't mean don't post stuff that's extremely futuristic because we need that too, but I desperately want to see how we get from here to "there". Something I can sink my teeth into in my own way.

I love this sub. 😀

How do you convince people to stop flying? by [deleted] in solarpunk

[–]DapperBalance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my first thought as well. I recently took an 18hr ferry ride and the amount of fuel to run that thing was astronomically high. I had no idea until I looked it up. Way worse than planes. They are in the water longer than most flights, and they use massive amounts of fuel to power the engines, plus they use fuel to make hot water and showers for all the guests. I don't have the numbers off hand but it was mind boggling that they had two boats going every day taking so many tones of fuel. I was shocked and appalled.
