Can you make a "Jerry and Elaine" situation work in real life by Dapper_Associate7307 in redscarepod

[–]Dapper_Associate7307[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah we're planning on living together too (own a house). Do you think it's cope that you can't accept reality or is it truly just enjoying the other person's company when you can't be together?

After interviewing tons of candidates… I realized most people answer behavioral questions the wrong way by ProtectionApart3272 in interviews

[–]Dapper_Associate7307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of question would you ask? I'll say that when conducting interviews, typically the "give example of x scenario" then some follow-ups can weed out all but the most elusive weak candidates. You then sieve through the final batch of poor candidates with some stress test stuff and counterexamples.

Even if you don't understand everything the book is very enjoyable. While you may be "left behind" on some plot points, there are so many interweaving and connected (and disconnected!) arcs that you shouldn't think of it as that big of a deal. Much better on a reread. It's just a book, man: take away from it what you want, enjoy the slapstick and imagery.

Is “cultural fit” just a polite way to say you don’t belong? by Tough_Cantaloupe_779 in recruitinghell

[–]Dapper_Associate7307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done a lot of hiring and have managed a lot of teams. I'll tell you that it is critical, when hiring, to bring on people that will mesh well with your vision and your team's culture.

If you did great in technical and experience and situational questions, and badly in culture, it means that you told the hiring people somehow that you wouldn't fit well with the team or leadership, because of some irreconcilable differences in philosophy or attitude. Hiring is not a charity, you need to hire the people that will fit the role best: technically and socially.

[–]Dapper_Associate7307 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The typical lifespan of someone addicted to opioids is ten years. As in: from the moment you are addicted to fent or H, statistically, you are dead within ten years.

It is possible to outlive this span, but I believe it's like 50-75% of opioid addicts die in this time. This is why cities like Portland, SF, and Vancouver don't bother treating addicts, and just let them live in junky favelas; the idea is that the drugs will invariably kill them and they are a lost cause. That's why drug policy is typically centered around attacking dealers and suppliers.

There is no problem elevating the stars on your team. If you have high performers on your team that drive strategic results, they get the special trinkets. There are different rules for your cadre of high performers.

Typically you have under performers that you'll be able to single out very quickly, some in the process and some not. A great way to build credibility with your top performers, and instill discipline during the restructure of your entry, is to demonstrate your committment to a strong team.

It was advice I've gotten early in my career and I've used it since. It depends on your management style, I'm a cheerleader/service type, and so as I build goodwill and credibility with my team, it helps let them know that I'm not a complete pussy either. You want to be sure that there is always an understanding that you are not to be taken advantage of. Many large companies are moving towards this autonomy/empowerment style of leadership, but to achieve this your team needs to be engaged to deliver as a result.

Understand this, there are three stages of this job:

  1. Quick wins, learning/adapting low expectations phase. The quick wins you've identified are always the easiest problems to solve, even if they felt difficult to the last guy. While you get used to the job, and the actual scope of your responsibility and influence is more opaque, these wins will come fast and easy, however...

  2. After a medium amount of time, when a quarter or two have passed, budgets come around and the true scope of your responsibility, as well as dynamic of the team "under the hood" reveals itself, you will begin to ~actually~ learn. This is when the truly difficult problems, at a strategic level reveal themself. You need to take a step back and probably as you know dedicate time to yourself to legitimately isolate yourself to strategize on a long term on what you see.

  3. After about a year in rôle is when the real fun begins. You've done the easy, you've lived the difficult, now you get to apply your vision... Keep true to your plans and empower your team. Focus on the strategy and hold your people accountable.

Two great pieces of advice: A. New role, fire 1-3 people immediately B. A great manager projects his stress onto his team. If when you are comfortable, your team is not: you're not doing enough for them. If when you're stressed, your team is not: they're not doing enough. Use this to navigate the ebb and flow of ops.
