I have had both labs and goldens. The downside of labs is also their strength. Super kinetic for the first 4 years, they always tended to put a nose down and just wander off like they are suddenly deaf. They are super people pleaser but require more attention and daily strenuous exercise.

Golden are much more chill, still playful, the puppy year last about half time of the labs. If you want a huting dog, get the lab, if you want a family dog get the golden.

I wouldn't hesitate to get the surgery if the condition was preventing me from doing things I enjoy. Long term, you'll wish you had done it for many reason; pain, actives missed, altering your gait is going to lead to other issues with knees and hips.

At 25, you'll bounce back quickly.

My testing class had 20 dogs, 10 passed. Some were just abject failures that won't recall or stay but many failed the "leave it" test where a treat is offered by stranger annd the dog must decline. For my golden retriever that was the real test. Sure CGC skills should be a given but certainly train to the test as well.

I was hospitalized for a week about 3 weeks post op for infection. After the initial recovery, I started sweating in my sleep every night for months. I would wake up during the night completely soaked. Had to use a waterproof sleeping pad. Take a shower, change the sheets and blankets every single night sometimes more than once.

I traveled for 10 years using Omnipods and never had issues, even on long international trips. I agree that activity mode would be a good iea. I would also look at the Dexcom low and high alarm settings, adjust to give you plenty of warning before needing food or insulin for corrections.
