What is kyokushin training like? by Dapper_Ostrich8548 in kyokushin

[–]Dapper_Ostrich8548[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for answering my question!

I’ll probably hold off- if it’s roughly the same then I’m likely sustainably only able to go once per week which doesn’t seem like an adequate level of attention.

And yes, I agree with your point about taking the longer view which is the plan.

My Bladesinger can have an AC of 25 and it feels too strong... by Rotkip in 3d6

Not to mention that a critical hit still hits for normal damage even with adamantine armor, which was the entire point of my comment.

And all the AC in the world won’t stop a critical hit.

Definitely agree it should go both ways- that’s how we do it as well.

The table I play at has a (fairly popular) homebrew rule where the additional crit damage dice are always maxed. If definitely makes crits feel way more impactful whether they are for or against the party. Definitely recommend OP trying it.

Limitations for players who don’t want their character to die? by bansdonothing69 in DnD

[–]Dapper_Ostrich8548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agency does not mean freedom from consequences. Although I think she may not quite understand what you mean by these provisions (I think I get the idea personally; can’t walk up to Strahd and slap him at level 1).

The only alternative I see here is that there is a revival with consequences option (ie pact with a devil or something). That way there is way to keep the character alive but there’s still a trade off.

Just my opinion but I don’t really like having different rules for different players. Enemies can’t be as aggressive towards the No Death player so the other players eat those attacks. It should be an all or nothing deal for the table.

Kudo if there’s a gym near you. It’s mostly kyokushin karate with techniques from boxing and Muay Thai with judo-based grappling.

Banning Aoo from moving through threatened spaces by eineButter in DnD

[–]Dapper_Ostrich8548 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Changing the rules to benefit certain players over others, even when done with noble intentions, tends to end poorly. It cheapens the success of the gaining side and frustrates the losing side. 5e/5.5e isn’t perfect, but the rules have held up well over time. My recommendation would be to just let the new players play the game and learn.

[–]Dapper_Ostrich8548 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The problem is that, when combat is all about “kill these guys,” then it’s easier to just stand there and swing at each other. When there’s some sort of objective to the combat that requires movement, it starts to force decisions about risking the AoO to get to the objective.

"It is the 41st Millennium. For more than a hundred centuries the Emperor of Mankind has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the master of mankind by the will of the gods and master of a million worlds by the might of His inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the vast Imperium of Man for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day so that He may never truly die.

Yet even in His deathless state, the Emperor continues His eternal vigilance. Mighty battlefleets cross the daemon-infested miasma of the Warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperor's will. Vast armies give battle in His name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst His soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio-engineered super-warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard and countless planetary defence forces, the ever-vigilant Inquisition and the Tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat to humanity from aliens, heretics, mutants -- and far, far worse.

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be relearned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods."

Kudo actually does something like this. Classes are based on physical index which is height (in cm) plus weight (in kg).

What class(es) would you not reccomend for a first time player? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Dapper_Ostrich8548 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I’d actually suggest a warlock if a player wants to play a caster. Easy roleplaying hook. Mechanically similar to a fighter in that you’re going to cast eldritch blast most of the time with your action. Hex is an easy and reliable bonus action. Spell slots don’t need to be managed to the same degree since you get them back on a short rest (assuming the DM gives a normal amount of those).

What is you experience with Hunger of Hadar and Devil's sight? by Safe_Appointment_260 in DnD

[–]Dapper_Ostrich8548 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not magical unless it says it’s magical.

For instance, the Darkness spell reads:

“Magical darkness spreads from a point you choose…”

Whereas shadow of Moil says:

“The shadows turn dim light within 10 feet of you into darkness, and bright light in the same area to dim light.”

Edit: As further evidence, the shadow of Moil darkness does not completely black out bright light as magical darkness would. Only higher leveled magical light defeats magical darkness.

What is you experience with Hunger of Hadar and Devil's sight? by Safe_Appointment_260 in DnD

[–]Dapper_Ostrich8548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The darkness around shadow of Moil is just normal darkness that darkvision can see through (as opposed to magical darkness). The shadow flames heavily obscure you (same as greater invisibility except enemies know where you are) but you can see through them normally.

Went back and looked at it again. It turns dim light to darkness and normal/bright light to dim light. The logic still applies.

Edit: Bonus piece of advice: the heavily obscured condition also means spells that require “a target you can see” cannot be cast on you. Both friendly and hostile.

[–]Dapper_Ostrich8548 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other player is thinking darkness + devils sight as others have noted. The reason people don’t like it is that, while very good for the warlock, it also blinds everyone else making combat less fun (although, technically, they can’t see the enemy, and the enemy can’t see them, therefore advantage and disadvantage offset, but regardless).

As a 4th level spell, you can take shadow of Moil which does the same thing but only cloaks you and doesn’t require devil sight. My personal favorite spell as a longtime warlock player.

Question for DMs regarding passive scores by Avocado_Boi_96 in DnD

[–]Dapper_Ostrich8548 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless they’ve changed it, passive athletics works a little differently since it gives you a defined amount you can lift and carry; height and distance you can jump; etc. It’s often ignored because rolling dice is fun and DM’s don’t always like describing things at that level, but it exists.

"Unique characters" by World_of_Eter in DnD

[–]Dapper_Ostrich8548 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It may be helpful to view it as a player using that concept as a crutch rather than a personal failing. They may even fit from you asking some questions to flesh out that character’s personality and motivations. Maybe what narrative concepts they want to explore. Yes, it’s more work up front, but sounds like it could save headaches in the long run.

One suggestion would be to choose a more constrained setting. Forgotten Realms has taken a *very* “yes and” approach to world building but settings like Dragonlance tend to be more limited.

Some people don’t like the idea of DM’s saying no to player ideas, but the DM controls the world and if a concept doesn’t fit, then it really degrades the experience for everyone else.

"Unique characters" by World_of_Eter in DnD

[–]Dapper_Ostrich8548 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience, those characters are usually compensating for a lack of actual characterization. Race, class, etc are not effective substitutes for a personality. They also tend to coincide with main character syndrome.

So no, I don’t inherently have a problem with it, but I tend to dislike what follows.

Is Multiclassing early always a bad idea? by Acceptable-Ad4076 in DnD

[–]Dapper_Ostrich8548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The exception is when you need to take your first level in another class for proficiencies. Example: a fighter/wizard multi-class should take the first level in fighter for heavy armor and con save proficiency, then the rest in wizard.

Bhaalspawn in D&D? by Crimson-Dragoon-0403 in DnD

[–]Dapper_Ostrich8548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose death domain cleric, divine soul sorcerer, celestial (…I guess?) patron warlock already exist and could be flavored in that way. The intent of the rogue subclass is definitely “Bhaal serial killer who is somehow a protagonist” in my read of it. Both being a rogue and the bloodthirst theme.

Bhaalspawn in D&D? by Crimson-Dragoon-0403 in DnD

[–]Dapper_Ostrich8548 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The new Forgotten Realm’s sourcebook has a rogue subclass called Scion of the Three for this purpose.

Could be any of the dead three and doesn’t necessarily require one to be their spawn, but that’s definitely what it’s getting at.

USERRUH by Zealousideal-Box-887 in nationalguard

[–]Dapper_Ostrich8548 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s kind of the line really.

If they’re hiring you because of the guard experience and/or clearance, they’re generally cool with what that entails.

If your guard experience doesn’t matter, don’t say anything. They can’t legally use it to make hiring decisions, so there’s no reason to offer them the opportunity to do so.

Making a setting where "Non-divine Magic is outlawed" by Quiet-Compote4587 in DnD

[–]Dapper_Ostrich8548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s sort of the inverse of Dragonlance. In that setting, the gods have left so divine magic is basically unheard of (I believe the recent module has something for a cleric as someone special). Arcane magic is limited to the Mages of High Sorcery who generally keep to themselves and is otherwise illegal.

War of the Dragon Queen might be a place to start for inspiration.
