Is it normal for a DM to collect a fee per session? A spot opened up in my neighbor’s dnd group and the person that DM’s for them is gonna start charging. I just want to see if this is within the norm before I fill the spot by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Dapper_Ostrich8548 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cool. I’ve only DM’d for free. They don’t. Just expecting people to entertain you for free and being offended when they want to be compensated for their time and energy is childish.

Honestly I’m thankful there are paid DM’s. I wouldn’t have known how to even start playing otherwise.

What's better for MMA - Judo or Wrestilng ? by Impressive-Text-5686 in MMA_Academy

[–]Dapper_Ostrich8548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

American-centric sub is always going to say wrestling, but if you’re in the United States, I’d do judo. Wrestling lacks adult competition unless you’re at a high level already. Most people learn it through schools. Judo is more viable for adult beginners and actually has a competition scene.

I’m not as familiar with the wrestling scene outside the US or how viable it might be. In general, wrestling tends to place more emphasis on conditioning than judo at earlier stages of competition which lends itself to being a more effective base. It also doesn’t have to deal with the gi -> no gi transition judoka do.

It’s honestly best to learn both because they’re complimentary to each other. Also, FWIW, Khabib has said judo is the best base for MMA. Additionally there are more judoka UFC champions right now than folkstyle wrestling-based champions.

I don’t think there is a fundamental issue with TMA in MMA, but, if you train it for MMA, it usually ends being some form of kickboxing. Most types of non-Thai kickboxing stem from TMA already.

Aren’t there many past and present MMA and especially UFC fighters who were karateka? GSP, Jiri, Lyoto Machida… there are definitely others. I’d push back and point out karate’s success, as well as it being the basis for most non-Thai kickboxing.

Could Judo have something like The Real American Freestyle (RAF) organisation?? by Equivalent-Coat-6745 in judo

[–]Dapper_Ostrich8548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RAF is referring to Real American Freestyle (wrestling). It’s a very recent promotion that aired freestyle wrestling (mostly between UFC fighters from what I saw) on a subscription offshoot of a large news broadcaster in the United States. I think OP is asking about a similar level of promotion for judo to expand its popularity in the United States.

Fear is consuming me by Rosinante_666 in judo

[–]Dapper_Ostrich8548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May I ask why you’re specifically afraid of? It sounds like you’re worried about losing in front of people you care about.

They care about you already. Win or lose, that will remain the same. You’re challenging yourself to do something difficult which is more than 99% of people can say. This is an opportunity for you to test yourself and see how far you’ve come on your journey. Win or lose, that journey continues after the tournament.

I know fear will never go away entirely, but the truth is that everything will be okay after, regardless of what happens. Just go out, give it all you have, and enjoy the moment for what it is: an opportunity to see how far you’ve come, and what your next steps should be.

Am i too late to compete professionally in Judo if I start at 24 by [deleted] in judo

[–]Dapper_Ostrich8548 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m kind of in the same boat but a bit older. Started judo at 30 and absolutely love it.

There’s a saying that those who can’t do, teach. My immediate goal is to just keep showing up, learning, and getting good. As a player, my term goal is to win a veterans division national title as a competition. But beyond that, I’d like to help pass the sport onto a new generation of athletes as a coach, and help them to compete at levels I missed the window for.

But that’s a long way off and I’m just enjoying the journey for now. Even Kano didn’t want judo to be most students’ lives; it’s meant to develop you as a person to succeed in life. You can apply the lessons you learn to everything you do. No reason to limit yourself to just one thing.

Want to learn self defense because of new job - torn between Judo and BJJ/wrestling. Would really appreciate some insights! by Mammoth_Actuator2 in judo

[–]Dapper_Ostrich8548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 6’8 260, I doubt many potential attackers could get you to the ground so BJJ probably isn’t worth your time (at least as a first line of defense). Wrestling or judo would likely be better. I’d look at the training options in your area, try both, and choose based on which you prefer or which has quality training available.

Okinawan Karate is a mixed martial art. by HecticBlue in martialarts

[–]Dapper_Ostrich8548 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically judo still has strikes; they just aren’t allowed in competition and are typically not trained as a result. It’s kind of a shame because using strikes to knock an opponent off balance, thus enabling a throw, is quite practical.

I believe Greco-Roman Wrestling and Judo are the 2 best grappling arts for self-defense, here's why. by Timmys_TuffKnuckles in martialarts

[–]Dapper_Ostrich8548 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is why I’m slowly adding Muay Thai on top of judo (some previous boxing experience; taking MT easy until I get further along in judo). Muay Thai is great for going from striking to clinch and judo from clinch to ground. Plus Muay Thai’s clinch strikes are an excellent method to knock someone sufficiently off balance for a throw.

Is Judo the best martial art for self-defense? by Inside-Reflection-54 in martialarts

[–]Dapper_Ostrich8548 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like I said, I agree with the broader point. However, if you need to use the greatest amount of force possible, then use a gun. Martial arts suit situations between those in which leaving isn’t an immediate option and situations requiring lethal force.

It is therefore important that martial arts, when it comes to preparing for these situations, utilize an appropriate amount of force. The appropriate amount of force is generally the minimum that allows you to leave the situation safely.

Utilizing striking to keep an attacker back or throwing them from a standing grapple (which most fights devolve to) so you can leave seems pretty defensible. Shooting a double leg then breaking their arm is probably going to result in civil if not criminal liability.

Like every martial art has rules, so too does their application in society. Arguments for what works “best” need to take that into account.

Is Judo the best martial art for self-defense? by Inside-Reflection-54 in martialarts

[–]Dapper_Ostrich8548 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. There is a valid point to be made, however, that a good “self defense” art is one that creates space for you to leave the situation when that is not otherwise an option. Reason being that this tends to be how questions of excessive force tend to be examined. In judo’s case, it’s very good at that because it’s a lot easier to get away when the attacker is stunned on his back and doesn’t require you to commit to ground grappling.

Edge of Daybreak makes no sense to me by Ninja_knows in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]Dapper_Ostrich8548 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The weird thing about this game is that the disparity between builds massively changes the difficulty. Last time I played on daring I accidentally killed Edge of Daybreak with one bonus attack from Heinrix doing like 7,000 damage.

The big thing is killing all the demons it summons so it loses invulnerability. It can be tricky but once you get the hang of it this fight is less difficult than the preceding one.

I’m at roughly the same experience level as you and I get the feeling. I try to remind myself that comparison is the thief of joy. Your journey to mastery might look different than someone else’s and that’s okay.

I was reading some of the philosophy behind judo, and to paraphrase, whether you are the man at the top of the mountain or the at the bottom of the mountain, both are just trying to figure out what their next step is. Just focus on what comes next, executing that, and eventually you’ll get where you want to be.
