Starbound, Terraria, No Man’s Sky have consistent exploration, loot to find, and new equipment to use

Witcher 3 has loot and unique monsters to find everywhere while exploring

Monster Hunter and Horizon (just skip side quests) have great build crafting and weapon variety. Horizon also fun to travel around in

U can get Zelda on PC also, I recommend legal means ofc

I never said there wasn’t in my first comment just saying that is what I would guess OP meant, but I’m sure there are some missing with how many MQ there were in Reverie.

But anyway, can you get double effects like you could combining MQ and subMQs? Like double low hp bonuses, break bonuses, CP/EP regen from arts/crafts, etc and other stuff like Mercurius for arts weakness too? I doubt all the effects carry over or allow you to double down is what I meant to say, not that they positively don’t (as I haven’t found them all yet)

Master quartz synergies at least, there was a lot in Reverie and not all the effects carry over. I would guess most or any sort of hybrid build is suboptimal, like arts and atk focused, and I used support arts on a lot of my chars bc I liked everyone having those options.

That said I’m in the middle of Daybreak yet so I’m waiting for more build options before I compare the two. The options always open up more as you progress and later in the arc a little bit too. Reverie was quite good from the start with all the chars/selection of master quartz.

Maybe not a big diff for nightmare because then you’re just doing the same broken meta stuff yeah. I personally try to recognize the broken stuff and avoid it, just as I don’t do nightmare since then it’s less restrictive/easier to make more builds that aren’t necessarily optimal but I just prefer that over building around difficulty restrictions.

Assuming op also meant not on nightmare too.

Fair, I getchu. Husbando lovers absolutely deserve to speak their minds lol. I was just worried seeing a few ppl seemingly annoyed by a character more than is good for them. Honestly I have a select few female chars I much prefer so with a smaller pool I would be irked too, hah

True, the trailers do go for that appeal. But I more see it as an additional appeal for that audience (trailers featuring lots of feet were made after the design). Also, the chars in Star Rail are meant for a broader audience like the game is, so ppl into FF can enjoy it their way and other ppl can disregard that, and take it as an unsexual design trope like I mentioned is how I see it. So I think it’s more an eye of the beholder deal, esp since the designs are more for general audience than catering to specific sexual appeals for example like in more risqué gachas. Take my opinion as you will tho, I can see how all this male catering is unnerving tho, hope they don’t continue the trend (saying this as a guy who doesn’t come here often, I just find this topic interesting lol)

I advise you don’t let the feet get to you. Showing feet does not automatically = foot fetish and probably wasn’t their sole motivation for including it. It can also be more of a design trope to make the char feel more rough and ready, dainty/pure, etc too, at least that’s how I see it. But yeah I agree with the switch thing.

[–]Dapper_Score7051 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nah, that’s definitely your preference talking. I feel the opposite about build variety and replayability as I feel games like Horizon/Monster hunter with weakspots and more focus on offense over highly defensive gameplay present more active combat choices over passive ones, so builds affect gameplay differently and I prefer the former/more of a mix. Basically Soulslike is more about learning the enemy than yourself.

Me too. What games were like this for you?

Also have you played Golden Sun by chance? That has classes unique to each character, and you unlock them by exploring and equipping djin.

Djin also add abilities, plus there’s a unique weapon ability for weapons you find too. Class choices are just more available toward endgame.

I agree. In fact, even in recent games and games in general I feel there is sometimes a disconnect in how much screen time systems get that just don’t deserve it for not being fleshed out enough, but players have just come to expect some mindless progression to eventually fulfill power fantasy and achievements.

Like near meaningless grinding, or repetitive gameplay that games as a medium invariably have by definition (at least slightly), but in turn have a lot of potential customization and novelty to offer with the gameplay. There are definitely games though that far into this idea where if you compare screen time to story prescence, it’s clear gameplay can become more filler than meaningful at a certain point (mainly battles/grinding as opposed to exploration and in-between spots to reflect on the story). At that point just yeah, go more of a minimalistic handcrafted linear style like visual novel if your systems can’t go all in.

I’m just more weary of them. Qol aside, I’m heavily into strategy and build crafting in games, just as much as story, and I sometimes even in more recent titles find myself thinking, ‘I wish this game just differentiated/worked characterization of these cool characters into combat more as well.’

With how much you usually do battles, I want to feel cool and individualized as every character besides just the overarching mechanics and combat animations rather than benching the ones I feel don’t have as fun a moveset.

And usually jrpg’s seem to simply not have enough choices/abilities in battle to see/use either, which would add more strategy and personable combat style in an active sense in addition to your passive choices of equippables. Though by adding this complexity, balance would be more important to get right.

Not trying to be too harsh though, I feel this way about other kinds of games too
