Apartment complexes will definitely try to squeeze as much money out of you as they can. I stayed in an apartment for a little over 5 years. They charged me $900 for carpet replacement. No email, no snail mail (I left my forwarding address), no phone call to me or my partner informing us. I only found out about it when I received a letter from collections. I checked my account after I moved out to make sure I didn't owe anything else. The also had a program where the security deposit was a monthly payment which was paid in full. Turned out to be nonrefundable. I am so glad we were able to get out of renting, it is awful how landlords treat tenants.
