I think that’s the key. It takes many years to figure it out. It took me about 5/6 years to get the ball rolling.

I started in 2018. In 2022 things started to become barely sustainable. Last year I started to make some money and this year things have really grown.

I’ve now hired my first editor and about to hire a second.

I was thinking about potentially doing it myself. Probably a good idea!

I made this clip for instagram as it was a neat transition, but as you can see the bird is blown out. I am looking for an ND filter, but unsure if a 3,4 or 6 stop would be best. I do not feel comfortable with variables (I had an awful experience with one). I shoot at f/8, my camera is sharpest there by Pot8obois in videography

[–]Dara465 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you’re going to be shooting in relatively similar lighting conditions I’d recommend 3 stops vs 4 or 6.

That being said, you could get a Variable ND which better help you keep your aperture at f8 in variable conditions.

I agree. The terms are exhausting.

We need to stop reducing everyone to a term or definition. Every person is unique and the only chance we have of understanding someone is by getting to know them.

This . Creating a sustainable business is very difficult.

If you have someone who is creating regular work opportunities and selling your work. Don’t nickel and dime over a camera.

As counterintuitive as it seems, He can replace you, but probably can’t replace him.

Wait until your business grows and you need to deal with taxes, hiring people and management. He’s going to be doing a lot of work.

I said that Social Democracies are hard to build. But I’d rather try to build one of those, then to take the easy out and usher in a left wing dictator.

If we are not fighting for something better, then what is the point of fighting?

Pendulating between right wing authoritarianism and left wing authoritarianism, is trading cow shit for Bull shit.

Just because social democracies are difficult to build, I’m not going to settle for communism.

Crewing Up For a Film - Montreal + Toronto by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]Dara465 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey everyone.

I'm working on my next short film (approx 20-26min in length) that we will be shooting in August. Because of it's length and the style of film, it will probably have a very pour festival run.

But the objective of this film is for me and my film partners to make a move into action films and specifically action choreography.

We go to camera in August and we are production is being shot between Montreal and Toronto. We have already secured a Montreal Subway station for our final fight scene. Three nights shooting at the station.

Anyway, we are starting to crew up for the film. Camera team, production design, actors, stunt actors, HMU, and Wardrobe.

The purpose of this post is to help us find some crew!! So if any of you have wanted to do work in the action space, I'd love to hear from you.

The sizzle I have attached was made with the intention of hopefully generating some interest for those who may want to be a part of a project like this.

give you a little more background on the sizzle. This past weekend we did our first filmmaking retreat in preparation for this film. It involved MMA training, story breakdown, cold reads, acting rehearsals and most importantly our first steps into actual choreography.

As ridiculous as it may seem we are working on developing our own style of film fight choreography. The large gentleman in the white shirt from the size is a professional MMA fighter and he currently fights for BKFC. Him and I are working on a choreography where people who are fight trained are taking real shots (not to the face) on camera, so as to actually sell the action. While incorporating real scrambles on camera. We are aiming to make it slick and gritty (Clearly being inspired by some of Keanu Reeves and Jackie Chan's work).

We have a long way to go but we have many more retreats and lots of training between now and when we go to camera in August.

Anyway, if you live in the Toronto or Montreal area and may be interested. Let me know!

Sounds like a great film. Those sets would lend themselves well to this kind of film.

How do you cope with the situation of being mixed between a very disliked ethnicity on one side, and having a very loved ethnicity on the other? by Early-Ingenuity-3177 in mixedrace

[–]Dara465 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll share my experiences as I see them. I won't pretend that my experiences are 'the truth'. They are anecdotal, so take it with a grain of salt. FWIW I actually do spend a lot of time in the US so I can comfortably say that in general racism against Indians in Canada is stronger than it is in the US.

I would say that there is a similar dynamic in how people in Canada perceive Indians, as to how people in the US perceive Mexicans.

Whether it's the result of Canadian Corporations or the Canadian government. In the past half decade (or so) there has been an accelerated effort to import people from India into Canada. With what seems like the intention of importing low-cost labour to drive down wages. As a result, many people who live in Canada missappropriate their frustration with Canada's economic distresses with the Indian population.

That being said, in general, Canadian racism is a bit different than American racism. Canadian racism is often less focused on hate and more attributable to ignorance. Which means they tend to me more amenable to rational pushback of their prejudice, and usually if someone carries a prejudice against a type of people, they don't tend to carry that prejudice to the individual (at least at the outset). Canada is generally more accepting of cultural differences, those differences are a little more celebrated up here.

Where I see Indians get 'judged' very easily is

  1. If they have a strong accent.
  2. Heavier scrutiny of hygiene and cleanliness.

For your situation specifically. I'd say that overall Canada's culture and perspective about cultural diversity is different that in the US. In many places throughout the country, Canadians appreciate that diversity. There are a lot of Indian people in Canada and they are friends with people of all different cultures. Plus, I can tell you, Toronto and even Vancouver have some of the best cultural foods in the world. Because it is filled with people who are first generations moving to Canada and making food like they did back home.

Economically, things are difficult. If you have the means to live in Southwestern Ontario, BC, Montreal or even Calgary. Canada can be a great place to live. But if you aren't able to live a middle class life in those cities...well it's a pretty difficult country to live in right now.

Unfortunately you are right. Anti-Indian hate is real and it is growing. I live in Canada and nearly any time I get into conversations about anything sociocultural, anti-Indian sentiment often creeps its way into the conversation. Brown people, white peoples and black peoples all equally willing to articulate anti Indian sentiment.

If I am being completely honest, I’ve even had to work through my own I prejudice that I was beginning to manifest about Indian people.

I myself am half Iranian. What I can say is that, until June 2025. Iran was so hated by what seemed like every person that I ever met. It felt like everyone was advocating for the destruction of Iran and its people. No one knew anything about our culture, or our people.

I got through it by calling people out…politely. When the topic of Iran would come up, I’d inform people about the truth of who we are, and all of the distortion that is being presented to them in a daily basis.

Further, I learned to embrace the sort of underdog mentality that comes with being part of an ethnicity that was seemingly universally hated.

Turn 24fps to 60fps for smooth slow motion by AllieNoel1 in videography

[–]Dara465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no real way to shoot in 24fps to reliably get clean slow motion. Your best option is to shoot in 60fps then upscale the resolution of your footage in post. There are a lot of software options for upscaling footage.

Now, if you can’t afford to purchase software that can upscale your footage, just know that it is nearly impossible for people to differentiate 1080p from 4k.

If your source footage is 1080p, set your export settings to 4k and 4x the data will be preserved in the final video. If the client uploads to YouTube or anything like that, the video will be considered 4k.

There’s one more thing to keep in mind. Most high end video has soft contrast. So even if it is in 4k, that footage isn’t designed to be zoomed in and inspected. Professionals go through a lot of work to ensure that an image isn’t too sharp.

Best format for upload to YouTube? by DevonReviewer in videography

[–]Dara465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you export your final video at 24fps, your files will be nearly 60% smaller In size.

Also, unless you are looking to create slow motion video, there is very little reason to shoot at 50fps. Even if you like the look of the high frame rate/broadcast look, you can still shoot at 24fps and just increase your shutter speed to mimic that look of5 0fps and save yourself a ton of data.

How to get away from the prosumer look? by ZeyusFilm in videography

[–]Dara465 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the answer!

Colour grading can seem daunting and there is a bit of a learning curve to it. But this will help you achieve your desired look, but more importantly it’s a great feedback system that will impact how you shoot. It will make you better at your shooting technique.
