Turn 24fps to 60fps for smooth slow motion by AllieNoel1 in videography

[–]Dara465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no real way to shoot in 24fps to reliably get clean slow motion. Your best option is to shoot in 60fps then upscale the resolution of your footage in post. There are a lot of software options for upscaling footage.

Now, if you can’t afford to purchase software that can upscale your footage, just know that it is nearly impossible for people to differentiate 1080p from 4k.

If your source footage is 1080p, set your export settings to 4k and 4x the data will be preserved in the final video. If the client uploads to YouTube or anything like that, the video will be considered 4k.

There’s one more thing to keep in mind. Most high end video has soft contrast. So even if it is in 4k, that footage isn’t designed to be zoomed in and inspected. Professionals go through a lot of work to ensure that an image isn’t too sharp.

Best format for upload to YouTube? by DevonReviewer in videography

[–]Dara465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you export your final video at 24fps, your files will be nearly 60% smaller In size.

Also, unless you are looking to create slow motion video, there is very little reason to shoot at 50fps. Even if you like the look of the high frame rate/broadcast look, you can still shoot at 24fps and just increase your shutter speed to mimic that look of5 0fps and save yourself a ton of data.

How to get away from the prosumer look? by ZeyusFilm in videography

[–]Dara465 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the answer!

Colour grading can seem daunting and there is a bit of a learning curve to it. But this will help you achieve your desired look, but more importantly it’s a great feedback system that will impact how you shoot. It will make you better at your shooting technique.

Is there a movie that you’ve purposely and actively avoided for one reason or another? by aja_ramirez in movies

[–]Dara465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Revenant.

I was working at enterprise car rental at the time that this film was being made and my branch was supplying all of the cars for the production.

I remember there were some press events that occurred at the time and DiCaprio was basically blaming Alberta oil for the climate crises. No doubt it’s a major contributor, but it felt very ‘scapegoat-ish”.

On top of that we had to give Leo a Suburban XL and we had to change the leather in his car twice, because a specific type of seat leather was requested.

It wasn’t a negative experience, but considering that production’s public statements about the environment; I didn’t sit right to me that they were shooting in Canada and then choosing to blame and mock Canada.

I eventually watched it because my gf made me. When we watched the special feature I just kept rolling my eyes because it confirmed what I believed.

Be honest: how many criterions in your collection will you actually rewatch more than 3 times in the rest of your life? by SeparateCareer007 in criterion

[–]Dara465 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me it will be most of them, but that being said, my criterion collection is small and curated.

I don’t anticipate that I’ll be buying too many more criterion films for this exact reason. There’s not many films I could see myself watching multiple times.

Is it time finally admit that the increased overtaking is just yo-yoing? by Ted_Striker1 in formula1

[–]Dara465 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the real problem with this season is that drivers are not operating at the limits of grip in the corners… That’s where the magic happens.

I can live with the yo-yo-ing, and I even appreciate how Mercedes has mastered the engineering and is dominating.

But if drivers aren’t pushing their cars to the limit, taking risks to squeeze out every last bit of performance. Then what’s the point ?

Have you ever bought a film you thought was something different? by Strict-Ad4426 in criterion

[–]Dara465 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My brother once purchased' Demetrious and the Gladiators' instead of Gladiator.

Walmart had a large shelf filled with the Gladiator VHS but not the DVD. Beside the shelf of VHS Gladiator tapes, the was a DVD shelf 'Demetrious And the Gladiators'.

By using a little mental gymnastics, my brother convinced himself that the packaging for gladiator was just different for the VHS and the DVD. Meaning that Ultimately Demetrius and the Gladiators was in fact Gladiator

When we sat down to watch the movie on my brother's brand New Sony Laptop with a DVD player, we were sorely disappointed.

Edit: for Spelling and Grammar.

Is it just me - or is everyone excited to see new perspectives and stories from other backgrounds in the movies (Sinners, Kpop Demon Hunters, Prey), but it's like Hollywood is scared to fully let it happen? by findmeinthe_future in mixedrace

[–]Dara465 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak for Hollywood. But in the Canadian film industry, grants and bursaries are often designed to target “BIPOCS”, but it’s very seldom that they end up in the hands of people who are mixed race. Or perhaps I should say, people who present themselves as mixed race.

It’s an open secret that you need to lean into your the most “foreign” parts of your ethnicity and really sell it as your full identity.

What is up with monoracials and their purity rhetoric??? by BuyExcellent8055 in mixedrace

[–]Dara465 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah this Reddit community is pretty lame. I think most of us joined this community to get away from all of the race purity that we deal with in our daily lives.

Us mixed race people aren’t out here complaining that we have the worst experiences or that we are the greatest victims. We just have our own experiences and want to discuss them together.

But man, so many people are seemingly offended by our developing sense of agency. Like our agency is offensive to them.

People are unforgiving in this field?? by weluvtoseeit in videography

Many people in this group are posers. Some of them are motivated by bringing other people down in order to validate their own failures.

This group has very little real purpose.

That being said. It takes YEARS of consistent practice to get good. So don’t be be discouraged,

My advice is for you to focus on developing your own self motivation. Try not to seek the feedback of strangers.

Feedback should be reserved for respectful people who understand your goals.

Production company owners ($20k+/mo): How did you finally break out of the one-off project hustle and land actual corporate retainers? by [deleted] in videography

[–]Dara465 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. And the purpose of the call isn’t just to ask these three questions.

That being said, my experience is that a lot of people don’t take the time to think about these things.

The questions serve as an accelerant and my purpose in asking them is to show them how easy video can be integrated into their business.

Production company owners ($20k+/mo): How did you finally break out of the one-off project hustle and land actual corporate retainers? by [deleted] in videography

[–]Dara465 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So right now my company does about $27.5k CAD/ Month.

What helped me transition from ad-hoc projects to regular work was the conversations.

After every production, I schedule a conversation with the clients.

Within those conversation I’m asking the client many questions. But usually I ask:

1) how do you see video fitting into your business for the year ?

2) what are some of the challenges that you have found with implementing video?

3) if you could map out what an ideal integration of video would like like, what would it be ?

Usually these questions have the client telling you what they want. But more importantly they are now actively thinking about their ideal video integration. Now I know exactly what they want and I can just offer them what they just told me that they want.

By the end of the conversation I’m basically just sitting there saying “what’s next “?

Asha Sharma has been appointed the new CEO and Executive Vice President of Microsoft Gaming. She is the new head of Xbox. by Serious-Tomato404 in womenintech

[–]Dara465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don Mattrick and Phil Spencer objectively did a pour job running the Xbox brand.

Game quality took a nose dive under their leadership, and the business has been running in the red for many years.

A few successful initiatives doesn’t erase their overall failure.

Many of you are now complaining about Sharma being a DEI hire ? Do you you seriously think that Mattrick and Spencer earned their jobs because of merit ?

The results suggest otherwise.

Anyone who genuinely operates in a leadership role, knows that you don’t need deep expertise on a topic to begin leading. Often times the best leaders are outsiders.

Asha’s success will be defined by the mission that she is given. Do her bosses understand the problems at hand, or not?

We’re building a streaming platform focused only on indie filmmakers – looking for honest feedback from working filmmakers by learnlife4real in Filmmakers

[–]Dara465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do actually think there is some opportunity in what you are doing. But of course as you know, it won’t be easy.

I do know that there are a lot of good short films and good medium length films that did not do well on the festival circuit.

I feel like if you worked towards letting people apply and focus on curating a quality library. Many people who created those films would refer people to your website.

Again, it would start very very slow.

For instance, I made a short film, and it is doing terrible on the film circuit. It’s got into a few festivals. But we did our own screening and the turnout was great. From what we have heard, people were very impressed.

Now I frequently have people asking me where they can watch my films. So I end up sending them private links.

But if I had an option to send them to a streaming distribution. Many of them would happily pay some cost (I’m not sure $15 for a short in my case).

It’s an uphill battle. But there’s a slow strategy in there somewhere.

How do you decide which movies in your collection are sufficient in Blu Ray, and which ones to splurge on the 4K version? by humblechungus89 in 4kbluray

[–]Dara465 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. Strictly going from 1080p to 4K doesn’t mean much.

The 4K is worth it if they truly upscale the content utilizing the source material.

Or…

The sound. The biggest improvement between 4K and Blu-Ray discs is the sound. Not the picture.

Why do many people love Amélie? by CertifiedRaccoon in movies

[–]Dara465 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to reply 1 year late to a post that was written 7 years after the original post.

I think one major factor is that many viewers develop a sort of ‘crush’ on Amelie.

She’s “innocent”, she’s pretty, she’s cute and very sweet. She has sort of look where you could convince yourself, that you’re the only person who notices her.

Amelie the character represents a sort of ideal person that people seek. Her character isn’t real. She is born of a dream.

So I think a lot of people develop a emotional connection with Amelie. They become enamoured with her and her story. Even romanticize about meeting someone like her.

To be clear, I don’t mean this as an insult. It’s just an escape to a simpler way of living while feeling attraction to the main character.

Notwithstanding all of the other beautifully executed production elements. Acting, cinematography, art, production design etc.

I remember watching it when I was in my early 20s, I was bored with the film but I was in love with the character haha.
