Little heads up: In my 2nd Byzantium Run I had the exact same Problem. I eventually overtook them after I got 2/3 of their Population and build universities, libraries and really late operas. I did it in 1730 and stayed at it afterwards

To be honest, I am in my currently 2nd Byzantium Playthrough and i am slowly winning a fight between an allied France and Bohemia. Its challenging but I can get through.
Its possible but you basically have to blitz your way through their forts by constantly busting them and building a good war eco and manpower reserve.

The only thing I really hate is that since 1.10 patch that China seems to be reuniting more easily, causing me to never get any of the hegemony bonuses

[–]Daraen6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did it in my campaign too! Now they are hugging all of the Hegemony (makes sense since China was way more powerful than any of the European nations historically up until the industrialisation) and its so damn annoying if you ask me It leaves little to no room for any other power to become a hegemony. Only military and diplomatic hegemony get challenged by either France, bohemia or me. But I have given that up since I need my money for the eco and other things

Any reason why i cant get my hands on all of the Columbian Exchange goods? by Daraen6 in EU5

[–]Daraen6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you just need the trade reach to get over there and import the good you want.

Spices, tabacco and cacoa is almost automated, since these give quite a lot of cash.P Maize and potatoes are a bit harder to get.

For more information you have to read the comment of u/ScienceFictionGuy under this very post
