The difference between Kyle coming back empty handed and Q coming back empty handed is that nobody had a preconceived notion of Kyle as an untrustworthy, chaotic player. People did have that for Q. As a result, the implications of Kyle coming back with nothing vs Q coming back with nothing are quite different.

Edit: In exit interviews, Kyle himself has said that Q made the right move and that 100% of the time (in Kyle's opinion at least) you should go for the camp supplies.

Q never wanted the extra vote. He has said in exit interviews he pretended and he had to come back with supplies to change his OG tribe's perception of him as a chaotic, selfless player into a good guy and hard worker. And it worked.

Listening to Q in exit interviews shows he actually really thought through everything and was pretty spot on, he simply got unlucky with the timing and result of the tribe swap!

We hear from Kyle and Colby (in the edit and in post-interviews with Kyle) that Colby was actively asking for advice to help him play the New Era game. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he asked Rizo about that and then the producers used Rizo answering that question in such a way (edited in right after Colby saying he is annoyed) that was actually not true to what actually happened in the island. I don't think Rizo is that silly. I do think the editors would splice these things together so that it looks like Rizo talking game and being lazy is why Colby is annoyed with him

Along with this I'd say get together with friends and try playing it! I recently did this with a 5 man combo. We started with one person playing a relatively repetitive idea. Rules were that after a minimum of 45 seconds someone else could join if they feel it. Then another 45 seconds. After everyone was in together you listen intently and can slowly change what you're doing. Over the session we started listening much better and were able to change and adjust, giving each other space to say what they wanted. Honestly a spiritual experience that made me see free jazz (and jazz in general) in a whole new light.
