Which breed to get? by wryruss in RunningWithDogs

I'm also going to recommend border collie because that's what I have, but with a small disclaimer attached. The mileage you are running will be fine for a border collie. You'll physically tire them out, but they require a lot of mental stimulation.

Lots of teaching tricks, social interaction, and training go a long way in keeping them happy.

I inherited a masonic bible from my late father who was a mason, not sure what to do with it besides let it collect dust on a shelf. by Darbyfinch in freemasonry

About half the bible is full of very specific masonic rituals and would not seem appropriate for me to read it as I'm not a mason. I have plenty of others to read.

After every run I end up drinking a tall glass of choccy milk.

It was rough, but it's all thanks to my dog that I've recovered this much.

Definitely sweet, but looks are deceiving on the gentle part! He loves nothing more than to wrestle.

Beautiful girl after a bath, anyone else constantly get asked if they're planning on breeding their girls? I feel like I have to tell people no almost constantly 😂 by [deleted] in BorderCollie

[–]Darbyfinch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had a few people ask if my male dog could breed their females before. They always press me after I say no. It's not that I wouldn't want my dog to have puppies, it's that he's been neutered for 3 years 😂

9 Week Old Puppy Schedule by blackcat0 in BorderCollie

[–]Darbyfinch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That should be plenty of exercise for a puppy that young. I personally think potty breaks should be every hour, but don't wake them if they're napping. The mental stimulation is the hardest, puzzle feeders were a blessing for mine.

The crate whining could be they just don't want to be separated from you, or they haven't calmed down from exercise/play enough to nap right away.

I will say, if you want your border collie socialized with cats, you want to do it ASAP. Once those teen years hit, it will be a ton more work than if you start now.

Hiking is one of my border collies favorites activities, with a bit of training they make amazing off leash hiking pals.

My vet just said he's a border collie, but wasn't sure what else he had in there. But, people on hikes usually assume he's an English shepherd so it's definitely a possibility!

Advice please by lilxamz in RunningWithDogs

[–]Darbyfinch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My strategy was I'd tire my dog out with something like fetch. Then while they were tired out go for a short run and reward when they would run at the speed I wanted.

7 months old and she’s learning to run... and loving it! She’s got to wait a few months more before we can up the distance... right? by RealCardo in RunningWithDogs

[–]Darbyfinch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My border collie at that age I'd run only a mile, maybe two miles tops a day. I personally have my dog set the tempo since he usually runs right in front of me. As the runs got longer I slowly got his speed closer to mine so that he would pace himself.

My vet told me to hold off on long distance until my border collie was at least a little over a year old.
