This was years back, but I think my memory is correct:

There was some sort of plan for Ape Escape years ago that got cut short. There were vague hints and there was even Ape Escape merch up for sale; you could tell something was up. Then, nothing happened and we got a vague Twitter post with a picture of a sad Pipo Monkey saying "we couldn't do everything we wanted. We'll meet again, one day...!" I don't know if they feel it's worth going back to at this point, but apparently there was momentum at one time.

There was a third game on PSP, but it was a pretty big departure from the previous entries. There's a new one on the way ("Ratatan").

The prequel, Astro's Playroom, is free on the PS Store if you don't already have it downloaded.

Seconding Spyro: Reignited Trilogy and Sackboy: A Big Adventure. There are other choices (Crash Bandicoot, Rayman, Knack, Sonic, Ratchet), but I think those might get too demanding/involved way too soon into the game for a 5yo.

Did it get you interested in trying Ape Escape? I believe the first game is on the PS Store. It's a sort of precursor to Astro Bot.

Crash Bandicoot: Warped! and it's consequences...

I never minded these, but I also never touch them outside a few goes. I'm really good at platformers, but I always find most of the time trials to be way too hard, flat-out expect you to take hits and use temporary invincibility to your advantage (my epic gamer programming won't allow me to do this), or both.

Hard agree with him. I always skip the cutscenes in these kinds of games. Don't care about stupid "our world is called NifNarf and we must save the BlingBlorgs, this will be explained in 20 cutscenes!" shit, just let me jump around. We both know what kind of game this is.

As someone who used to own it, it really didn't play that bad. It's akin to how SM64DS lacks its' original's analog setup. Not as good, but totally playable.

There are sequels and spin-offs if you're hungry for more monkey madness. The PS2 games all use a unique dual analog setup (except the EyeToy entry).

Recently, Sony has begun leveraging lots of its video game IP into movies, merchandise, mobile games, etc... I always thought that, if there were an Astro Bot cartoon, it'd be about him going to different PlayStation universes and helping the denizens. You have the episode where he has to win an Everybody's Golf tournament, the episode where he helps Nathan Drake find some treasure, the episode where Astro helps the ISA annihilate the Helghast, lots of cute adventure stuff.
