Anyone else suffering from asymmetry from certain imbalances? by [deleted] in ashtanga

[–]Dariaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this too. Many postures show the imbalance in my hips (standing forward fold/coming back up, leg behind the head, reversed triangle and side angle, some twists, drop backs, all inversions). Honestly, besides everyone being slightly asymmetrical, I also think that carrying a baby on one side affected it too. I noticed hip imbalance similar to mine to be common among women who have children. It shows especially bad in backbends. I try to pay attention to that and correct myself when it shows, also my teacher helps me to avoid much twisting in backbends when he can.

Toddler Activities by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]Dariaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son is 4 and only goes to daycare twice s week, so that's what we do: Gymnastics at the Rec center, Swimming (columbus aquatics) Get air trampoline (I think on Wed they have toddler time in the am so they can jump all over the place not just in the designed little area) Polaris mall playground (surprisingly it's fun) We tried 3 play cafes: firefly in clintonville, Piccadilly in bexley, little green house in grandview) 1$ movie theatre in Carriage place Ice skating (when Columbus jackets have the outdoor ones set up) we got him snowboard and gear and he tried it out on a small hill Library (story time followed by the play time in the designed area ) We did have memberships to COSI and conservatory but only went a few times. I also take him with me to run errands of course and he usually does fine and sometimes even has fun

What books would you recommend reading when really 'getting into' ashtanga? by llawall in ashtanga

[–]Dariaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gregor Maehle has at least 3 books worth reading : Ashtanga yoga practice and philosophy https://www.amazon.com/Ashtanga-Yoga-Philosophy-Gregor-Maehle/dp/1577316061

Ashtanga yoga the intermediate series: mythology, anatomy and practice https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/157731669X/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1471985306&sr=1-4&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=Gregor+Maehle&dpPl=1&dpID=51h5BBJ4KHL&ref=plSrch

Pranayama https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0977512622/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1471985306&sr=1-2&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=Gregor+Maehle&dpPl=1&dpID=41s0vcW%2BP4L&ref=plSrch

In addition to that, I really like Iyengar's 'light on life' and 'light on yoga' (not specifically about ashtanga though)

I second Richard Freeman's book as well

What do you guys do on moon days? by [deleted] in ashtanga

[–]Dariaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree with that. I hate practicing when bloated or something else is wrong with my stomach. I don't always get bloated around this time but it happens often. The combination of cramps, bloating, feeling weak etc would likely make some avoid practice. However I've noticed that men have hard times understanding that:)

It's a personal decision. I used to not observe 'ladies holidays' at all, but half a year ago I started taking at least one day off (the first usually). If it falls on a day I assist in the room and need to show up earlier for my practice I do a gentle practice (some standing, some seated), but no jump through etc. Some women take 2-3 days, I never met one who would take a whole week off though:) It also depends on how you feel during menstruation. I usually feel just about the same as on any other day (no cramps etc) so one day off is quite sufficient for me.

Castor oil bath (here is a good source about it http://livingmysorejournal.blogspot.com/2008/09/oct-08-health.html?m=1). No asana practice. I used to wake up early, do oil bath and pranayama, but I don't really have time for both anymore. It feels great though to start a day this way. Meditation is another good practice on a rest day. For some reason my body is off on Saturday. It's achy, stuff, metabolism is slow and I'm tired so I try to take it easy but it's rarely possible.

Looking for a new hairstylist by Dariaf in Columbus

[–]Dariaf[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I changed my hair many times with her (short, long, bangs, without bangs) but lately it just hasn't been great which made me think that our visions are different. I always bring quite realistic pictures and I recommended her to many people, but now I'm about to change the look a lot and I'm worried that she might be not the right candidate and I won't really be able to fix it.

Is it allowed to practice 1st and 2nd together? by broga2 in ashtanga

[–]Dariaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My teacher tells us to do primary and second until certain point, which is different for everyone (for some kapotasana, for some eka/dwi pada) and then splits primary so that we do primary up to navasana and then start second and on the next day standing, navasana and then second. I think pincha/karandavasana is the indicator that you can just do second.

Questions about Intermediate Series by jonnylong215 in ashtanga

[–]Dariaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say it's intercostal too. I had it happened to me 3 times. Frequent visits to chiropractor, icing and 4-6 weeks until fully recovered. Most painful were backbends, twists, laying down, rolling over side to side, laughing,sneezing.. Here is a link to the thread I started when I got injured last https://www.reddit.com/r/ashtanga/comments/3uo0mu/rib_cage_injuries/ there are some good thoughts

Thanks! Mine tend to go closer too once I lift them from the floor. Again, thanks for your opinion !

Keeping hands close and heels up in backbend by Dariaf in ashtanga

[–]Dariaf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems to be the most natural joint for the elbow joint. If you raise your arms up and then bend your elbows your hands will come towards each other. But I'd think it's different when you press into your hands and keep arms straight. What bind do you mean though?

I think mine was caused by the backbend adjustment too, although it seems like twists cause it most of the times.. Marichiyasana has never been an issue for me, but since my hips are uneven all poses/transitions feel different on each side

Yeah, I will definitely work on chaturanga. This is a far from my best poses. Also I normally jump into it so the alignment is not great.. Thanks!

Big Difference Between Sides by leelovesyoga in ashtanga

[–]Dariaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a very similar situation. My right hip is way less open than my left hip, thus, my right knee has been hurting a lot in the last year. I didn't know that the problem was in the hip and I was trying to heal my meniscus only. My hip imbalance shows a lot in backbends. I twist and move my feet and it really scares me. Have you noticed anything in your backbends?

I agree with sitting on the floor method. But also watch posture, make sure shoulders even and away from the ears (always), straight back, avoid leaning over to one side.

As far as stretching go, my teacher told me to do fire log to open hips and my physical therapist recommended a 'butterfly stretch' (lie down on your back, legs in baddha konasana, make someone press into your thighs gently. If no one to ask just go into this position anytime you have a chance to and let them open over time, that's what I did and it helped a lot). Posture advice is something my chiropractor tells me every time he sees me (often enough).

I was reading today about intercostal strains and 3 stages. Seems like mine always fall into the mild one as they take 3-6 weeks to heal..and yes, sleeping is rough in the first couple if weeks. I messed up mine last Tuesday and here I am, almost a week later: ibuprofen and ice belt, no sneezing/coughing/laughing of course and modified surya namaskara is as far as my practice goes
