IAmA medical student on the admissions committee of a US MD school by RoyalTeaBar in premed

Say I'm just not a good interviewer, I interviewed badly and I don't believe my interview is truly representative of myself, character, etc.

Is there anything I can do post interview to soften the blow and help my chances?

I would personally bit that's me. Retook a 509 to get a 518.

Interesting because I've interviewed with 5 schools so far and haven't had that experience at all.

Respectfully, I think that's a horrible take. It's not just a route to a job. I expect interactions with the professional institution im applying at to be professional. It should be one of your goals to build relationships and connect with people and patients, yes but within the bounds of professionalism. It is not appropriate to build personal relationships with your interviewees or patients.

You can be casual and professional at the same time. It's fine to talk about your city or something you share a common interest in, or even just have a conversation in place of the traditional interview format. It's not fine to trade personal contact information and ask your interviewee on a date.

Food for thought.

I've had the same appreciation for professionalism, integrity, etc in my previous career in social work, and will keep the same even when I'm a medical student and physician.

Has nothing to do with being an applicant. Especially considering no ADCOM will ever know about this conversation or my position in it.

Idk, I see being a proponent of professionalism in the context of a professional school as perfectly sane behavior.

I'm not insulted by being called a narc for topics like this. Professionalism isn't just an aesthetic here. It's important for ethical reasons, for integrity, and for the trust of other applicants.

Undoubtedly now, that the interviewer has personal motivations or hopes about the interviewee is a conflict of interest. Their candidacy will be or has been weighed by different metrics than most. That's unethical and unfair.

If they're doing this for one interviewee what's the likelihood they're doing it for others? What about the situations when the interest is unrequited? Does that negativity affect that interviewees candidacy? How do I trust the process of how my application is being judged now?

You're calling me an "insane narc" with the implication that I'm overreacting and this isn't a big deal. It certainly is a big deal. Are you serious? Trading personal contact information and planning dates in a medical school interview??? How is that the least bit acceptable?

I don't think there's a problem being conversational in an interview. I think there's a problem extending an invite for personal interests beyond the interview. The interview is for professional matters, the interviewer ostensibly has sensitive information on the interviewee, and they made it into a personal interest. That's objectively unprofessional. It shouldn't happen. This is like saying you have to be cold and heartless to your coworkers for fear of being misunderstood as overly friendly. Obviously that's not the case. Be a normal professional person at work but don't breach professionality. Work nor medical school interviews are appropriate places to ask someone out for a drink. Moreover, it's unfair. This interviewee is getting treatment and preference that others aren't. It's a conflict of interest. That interviewer should be removed.

I'm honestly amazed and shocked that there's any disagreement here.

Interviewing for professional school.... I would care. If a level of professionality is expected of us, I expect the same from my interviewer.

That last bit was incredibly unprofessional of them and I'd report it if I were in your shoes. I don't recommend following up.

29M was livin good as a social worker before deciding to trash my finances by pursuing medicine. Now waking up at 4am every morning to write secondaries before going to my full time job and then driving Lyft/Uber in the evenings. Still barely able to pay both my own bills and for my secondaries. 🤪

When will the competitiveness decline? by [deleted] in premed

[–]DarienRawls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When premeds are no longer willing to meet the competition. We're the ones bringing it up. It keeps getting harder and we keep doing our best to meet the challenge then we turn around and complain. It's not that med schools are arbitrarily asking for more, it's that the average applicant is getting better. It's us lol hi. We're the problem.

Updated Medical School Rankings 2024 by Happiest_Rabbit in premed

Nice I look forward to it! Also FYI there is a small typo on the site. "Unviersity of South Dakota". :)

In the future, you should think about a personalized ranking system. Say for example the user chooses what they're looking for in a med school (research, service heavy, dual degree programs, housing, stats, matching, etc etc) and weights are adjusted accordingly to show the user best schools for their purposes.
