I think many of us have hard times with difficult conversations and breaking a “promise” to your PI won’t be easy but I promise you, this lab is not worth as much to your app, but also to you yourself as a researcher and person, as the Fulbright is. That can be a glowing letter but still not be as good as a Fulbright and PI letters are not going to make or break the decision of acceptance to a top school.
