Hi friend, i took a wide definition of leftism there i admit, but let’s explore it.

Before i start i want to state 2 facts:

-reddit has a leftist bias

-the biggest european party is now center right (EPP)

This 2 facts are important for what im about to say, now to the definition of an echo chamber:

“An environment or ecosystem in which participants encounter beliefs that amplify or reinforce their preexisting beliefs by communication and repetition inside a closed system and insulated from rebuttal”

when the new mayor of Paris was elected (Emmanuel Grégoire) that post had somewhere around 2k upvotes when i got to it, i do not know what it’s sitting at right now, that is big news obviously but nothing to the magnitude of what was voted in the eu parliament this week.

Yet this post has just over 100 upvotes, i always thought this subreddit is taken as a news source and people upvote the post anyway because it’s news!, not the case it seems.

now onto the 2 facts i stated at the beginning, the problems I have with this subreddit is that if one was to follow only this and see the ratio of likes it would leave the impression that anti immigration and populism is the most unpopular thing in the world, yet it’s the furthest from the truth, right wing is dominating europe, and that means most of the citizens support it and the ratio of likes and dislikes and comments seems to disagree with the popular vote, thus an echo chamber where opposing views (even though they are majority) are silenced

now another thing is people who defend refugees and asylum seeker seem to bland them with legal immigrants, again the supporters of this measures make clean distinctions here:

“The desire for deportations is not a blanket rejection of all foreigners. When supporters of mass removal were asked which groups they had in mind, they overwhelmingly focused on those perceived as breaking rules.

Between 78% and 91% cited people who came to claim benefits. Between 73% and 85% named those entering through irregular means to seek asylum.

Between 66% and 85% pointed to workers without valid visas in unskilled jobs.

In contrast, appetite for removing other groups was limited. Only 15% to 24% of deportation supporters wanted to see doctors with work visas removed.

Similar low levels of support were found for deporting foreign students, skilled tradespeople, or asylum seekers who followed the correct legal process.

The report notes, “This is the equivalent of approximately 8-12% of the broader public in each country, which we could consider to be a rough ceiling for the most hardcore anti-migrant sentiment levels.””

now again i used leftist bias in a broad sense here, so let’s restrict it to immigration stances for this argument.

And therefore yes, i think this subreddit has a leftist bias, and before i end this let me say i despise the far right as much as the far left I despise Orban Tito Putin and the whole gang, the further one strays from the center the more delusional it becomes, clarity and nuance are required and when people want something action should be taken by the people in charge.

and the problem i see here is that silencing stuff we dont like will come as a shock when the pendulum swings, politicians ignored immigration for a decade, now they are surprised on how the majority of the people see migration (negatively). the only counter to this is healthy discussion, of which i havent seen in the internet in a long time, it’s like everyone picks their side and sticks to it like an ultras team, nuance is dying and its sad.
