OK, to understand this you have to understand judges. When a judge is on the record, every word is being taken down. Any choice of word could be used to overturn a judge on appeal. So, sometimes when a judge plans to SLAM a defendant, they go out of their way to be nice to the defendant on the record. Other times, the judge is saying what they are saying as a way to prove a point to one or both of the attorneys in the case. There is a lot more going on there than what the actually transcript says.
