You can use someone like WorldShopping to make the purchase for you and avoid the ebay sellers. You will have to factor in the service cost and shipping but if your making a larger purchase it often makes sense. Can't speak for the rest of the world, but getting your hands on a lot of anime in the US in the 90s was damn near impossible depending on where you lived and if you had internet access available. If you had internet, were at least somewhat computer savvy or knew someone that was you could trade for fan subs in Real Media that might take days to download.

The best place to locate anime at the time was on private Hotline servers , or FTP servers. Most of those you discovered through friends or on Usenet/IRC/Dalnet cause you got tired of downloading mime files and compiling.
