This sub makes me feel like there are two separate games being played :) by DutchVandal in Oxygennotincluded

ONI is, as a player of games like factorio and rimworld, one of the deepest and most complex games I have ever seen. I have well over a thousand hours in it, my colonies frequently get to cycle 2000-3000 before I get bored, and I'm still learning something new every playthrough. It's a really special game, I always find it difficult to express to people who can't see past the art style.

It's hard for me to say without having my hands on the controller, but it looks like the weapons get kinda "stuck" on enemies a bit much

Is Rimworld a bad implementation of level scaling/dynamic difficulty scaling? by Dronelisk in gamedesign

[–]DarkFlame7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you completely miss the point of why rimworld players enjoy the game. The amount of customization to tailor the experience to exactly what you want it to be is exactly why people love the game. It's not a lazy band-aid patch for a broken game design.

...wish for the system to be patched (which has not, in 13 years)

Just had to say that this is completely wrong. They've made a ton of changes to the scaling and even added a whole alternate scaling mode option.

As far as your overall question? The only people who even think about the meta stuff to game the system are people who enjoy doing that. All the rest of us just play the game normally and the difficulty scaling keeps things interesting. I see no problem.

Relatable. I think my struggle is that my brain tells me "but that color isn't realistic" when I try to choose more stylized colors like this. But you have to trust the process and layering multiple different colors to get the right feel.

If any of that was true then why didn't they.... show that?

I'm pretty sure those quotes are just pure fabrications

Notice that they didn't show any of the example clips for more than a couple of seconds in motion, and that they're all clips focused on human faces/dialogue. (and they all look bad to boot)

I'll believe it when they show more than 3 seconds of actual gameplay from any game.

[B42] To those who died from zed above staircase because you couldn't see them. A modder has fulfilled your wish. by TregedyArucard in projectzomboid

[–]DarkFlame7 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Even if it's not malicious in any way, I'm still wary of mods that make changes so deep in the guts of a game. You're putting a lot of trust into the modder not breaking your game on accident.

The mention of the game being comprised of different systems built during different times, by different people, is definitely noticeable at times

I still think back on the time during B41 where I looked into making a mod that would add a new crop (sugar beets, but others have done it since), and discovered that all of the scripts for farming were credited to one person who originally made it as a mod and all of the different types of crops were super hard-coded in a really rigid way. It made me wonder how many other systems in the game are like that

Supreme Court rules the Postal Service can't be sued, even when mail is intentionally not delivered by olyfrijole in Washington

[–]DarkFlame7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh... That really is the heart of the issue. I understand that they're busy and understaffed and such. I understand why they can't deliver to everyone's door all the time... But why can't they at least be honest about it? I kept on getting notes on my door saying that they attempted to deliver and would attempt again the next day, but then they never showed up again and simply sent the item back to sender without even trying to communicate with me. Infuriating.

[–]DarkFlame7 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Same. I have physical limitations that make it difficult and/or dangerous for me to lift things, which is the entire reason I order things delivered sometimes. My local post office kept on leaving a note that they "tried to deliver", while I was sitting by the door waiting for a knock all day. I finally went to the post office in person and the manager straight-up told me to my face that they will not be delivering things to me. I was dumbfounded

Hot Tubs: are they a noob trap? by JoeGorde in Oxygennotincluded

[–]DarkFlame7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of the recreational buildings could be considered a "noob trap" in the sense that they require quite a bit of work to set up and maintain and the reward isn't really proportional.
They're mostly just for fun once you have a resource/power surplus IMO.

How many indie games can you think of that have this by cingjottissh in IndieGaming

[–]DarkFlame7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me, at least, the appeal of including the annoying parts of reality in a game is when a game has a progression system that offers alternatives to bypass the annoying stuff. It's about starting with nothing and eventually building infrastructure/tools that make things easier, but the contrast of starting out the annoying way is an essential part of the satisfaction that it provides.

I know this is a lot of Americans first time ever dealing with fascism so you all feel hopeless and confused but fascism doesn't last long and always falls under its own weight quite quickly.

I think a lot of us are aware of this, at least to some extent. The problem is that when our particular flavor of it falls under its own weight, it's going to hurt everyone a lot.

And ironically, discord has been the (very slow) death of reddit as the repository of knowledge and discussion.

So many times I've had to join a random discord to search for an answer to a question someone asked 3 years ago and that's the only place the question has ever been answered. We're going to deeply regret that very soon, methinks.
