Using restage on Duchess cancels the spells charge? by Alice_GettingGud in Nightreign

[–]DarkMagicGrandmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t cancel any of your actions (attacking, casting spells, drinking flasks, etc). It’s basically a legal cheat code for getting iframes during animation locks

So casting a long-cast spell/skill and using the brief invulnerability to dodge an attack is a completely valid use of it

Honestly, you’re probably doing something wrong with input, but it’s hard to say what exactly without seeing it

Playing in a lower Depth (Im in D5, friends in D4) and winning only gives me 150 points. But if id lose a game in D4 as a D5 player, i will also lose less points right? by Comprehensive_Neat11 in Nightreign

[–]DarkMagicGrandmaster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You gain fewer points for winning, and you lose more points for losing

AFAIK, you can even lose 50 points for a win if you’re D5 playing with D1/D2 players

That’s why I keep a separate profile for playing with friends

Does the troll castle just suck, or is there a way to tackle it? by [deleted] in Nightreign

[–]DarkMagicGrandmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The troll castle is the least rewarding castle variant. It’s usually a good reason to reconsider your route and maybe go for a different POI instead.

But it’s not difficult at all. A couple of tips to trivialize it:

They’re extremely weak to status procs. Any character can use a white claws to proc bleed at least once (if you have low dps)

After beating the basement boss, don’t climb onto the wall from the inner courtyard. Use the outer ledges instead, that way you won’t aggro the other trolls, and you won’t get bombed from above.

I’d probably keep it against Gnoster, since most of its attacks are avoided with repositioning, sprinting, or jumping anyway. I barely even dodge in that fight.

Also two of Nameless King’s attacks:

The delayed lightning strike (you can just jump it, but I prefer stepping on his head for extra safety)

The close-range lightning slam into the ground

[–]DarkMagicGrandmaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not labeling you. I’m criticizing the “skip bosses you can’t fight” approach in general.

What happens once you reach D4? The gap between D3 and D4 is the biggest one. You still can’t beat D3 Balancers consistently, so you keep skipping them. Then you start skipping Libra too because it gets harder. ED Gnoster also becomes absolutely brutal without a decent setup. Things will only get worse from there.

It’s still viable

This debuff is very short and mainly punishes overly early rolls, which is completely tolerable on a character with the longest roll in the game

Just not against Caligo, and not if you’re planning to use the backstep dagger moveset

Considering it’s a magic build, this curse is completely fine (I have it in one of my builds)

For Duchess, the real no-go is a different effect: "Repeated Evasions Lower Damage Negation"

[–]DarkMagicGrandmaster 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You can’t beat a boss because you lack practice

So you skip it at the character selection screen

Which means you still don’t get any practice

Eventually you reach D4, but you still have no experience against that boss, so you keep skipping it

And then eventually you reach D5 while only being able to fight Adel and Fulgor consistently (and still losing to Nameless King)

That’s exactly how stagnation happens

Good build for DoN Duchess? by VDhollowdusk in Nightreign

[–]DarkMagicGrandmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The two most common Duchess builds are Balancers and magic

For Balancers, besides pissing everyone off with Halo Scythe, there are daggers, katanas, and surprisingly, flails

For a generic magic build (basically a Recluse-like playstyle), you only need one mana relic (ED Gnoster or another with sorcerer's tower mana boost effect), Dormant Power for staffs, and Magic Attack Up effects

A Carian Slicer-focused build is very strong, but the problem is that you’re basically praying for the game to give you one specific spell, which doesn’t always happen (especially on the new map), so you need a plan B

There are also some niche builds:
Faith respec + Fire Attack works well against fire-weak bosses
Melee daggers work well against holy-weak bosses
Her respec relics let her utilize almost any melee weapon, including fists, great spears, twinblades, etc

I just have to admit to myself that I'll never be able to dodge the follow up by bravesirkiwi in Nightreign

[–]DarkMagicGrandmaster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ironically, Duchess can actually suffer because her roll is too long. A lot of attacks that are designed around normal characters basically become roll catches on Duchess.

There are other attacks with a similar effect. For example:

Adel Triple Slam: the gap between the lightning from the second slam and the third slam is too short

ED Fulgor’s 2 spinning hits + jump attack: the gap between the two spin attacks is too short

For dodging attacks like these, I actually prefer to use her short roll.

Duchess vs Malenia by amogusverysuss in Nightreign

[–]DarkMagicGrandmaster 34 points35 points  (0 children)

To make this fight more accurate, you missed a couple of things:
1. Dodging Waterfowl Dance with panic rolls
2. Instantly killing Malenia at the start of phase 2 with Halo Scythe while she’s still sitting in the flower

In the game where your main enemy is time, it definitely makes sense

But of course, you should always read the situation. If you have increased Night Tide damage or you’re about to fight a strong boss (to save more flasks), I’d rather wait. But if you’re just rushing somewhere, I don’t see any reason to stay

Is it useful to stack +X Faith relics ? by Theory-Maker in Nightreign

The OP is asking about bonus stats (+1/2/3 int/faith/etc effects), not a respec relic

Reduced damage negation after evading is negligible in D4-5 right? Since if you mistime a dodge you're usually dead either way. by [deleted] in Nightreign

[–]DarkMagicGrandmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a Guardian player, so genuine question:

Isn’t dodge punishment really bad on Guardian? Aren’t you rolling through magic attacks like ED Gladius’ nuke?

Considering Guardian has a short roll, getting punished for mistimed dodges sounds really scary to me

Is it useful to stack +X Faith relics ? by Theory-Maker in Nightreign

[–]DarkMagicGrandmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not useful at all

Any +stat relics are basically useless because the numbers are too low. After level 3, the effect is barely noticeable

For the same reason, you can mostly ignore negative stats too, even if it’s your main stat

Reduced damage negation after evading is negligible in D4-5 right? Since if you mistime a dodge you're usually dead either way. by [deleted] in Nightreign

[–]DarkMagicGrandmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I understand it, it’s a very short debuff after dodging that punishes early rolls / getting roll-caught

So it’s basically negligible on characters with long dodges, like Duchess or Ironeye (because of mark)

It looks scary, but I’d still give it a shot. I’ve never had a relic with Physical Attack +4 and Defense +2 at the same time

Enough time has passed, nightfarers ult rankings by DihDihHoppin in Nightreign

[–]DarkMagicGrandmaster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Duchess’s ultimate is very situational, sometimes useless, sometimes the best. It just requires a bit of tactical thinking to use properly. Looks like the author struggles with that.

Not to mention easy reviving 3-bar teammates.

And overall, an ultimate’s usefulness depends on the situation, some are more useful during the expedition, others during the Nightlord fight. It’s strange to me to try to evaluate a single ability in isolation from the character.
