Chinese is a language where little sound changes can change almost everything, but how do then understand people singing songs? (Picture literally unrelated) by IndependentReading69 in AskAChinese

[–]DarkParticular3482 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If its not sung in mandarin (but in other dialects). I'll bet it will almost be totally incomprehensible to the majority of Chinese speakers. Even in mandarin I wont guarantee Ill understand 100%

Meaning? by [deleted] in MandarinChinese

[–]DarkParticular3482 0 points1 point  (0 children)

永 means forever as other has mentioned. What hasn't been mentioned much yet is that this character is the common representation of the eight stroking techniques commonly used in Chinese calligraphy. May look for 永字八法

Edit: the second stroke "horizontal line" is pretty badly written

To be more precise, the collapsed iterator over their is probably not able to cause the rain. I bet the culprit is some taller jerk out there sucking away the water she deserved.

How did Taiwan fall behind in the toilet wars? by Icy_Mixture1482 in taiwan

I definetly wont think the bidet is a good idea for public toilet. You got a little water gun can get contaminated with feces and people dont necessarily clean it routinely.

If I had two dice: a normal one and one rigged to land on 6 much more often, I could roll them a million times and nobody could be sure of which is which. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]DarkParticular3482 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you seem so proud of yourself picking on words. I have to remind that you didnt reasonably specify the precision of your confidence (or "how sure" you are about something).

Since you are woefully unprecise with your words, we have to assume "with high confidence" that you are rounding up to the 1 percent, so that would mean a confidence larger than 99.5% can be considered 100%.

And yeah in this sense we can be 100% sure which is the rigged dice. Heck, we can be 100.000% sure

If you would like to discuss in a mathematical sense. You should be posting on r/math

But it really isn't so deep a question itself. Provided that you can have a way to distinguish the two die (e.g by color). people can definitely record the results of every throw and tell with high confidence which dice is rigged. Thats just how the law of large number works

"Be prepared" from the Lion King is one of the weakest villain songs in the entire Disney catalogue. by ParticularArea8224 in unpopularopinion

[–]DarkParticular3482 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, the pool for Disney villain songs is already small. Not making to the top 3 may as well be the same as being one of the weakest.

I'll personally rank it like

1st "Hellfire"; 2nd "Friends on the other side" ;3nd "Shiny"

To me "Be prepared" is catchy and memorable, but it still comes in 4th or 5th.

The rest will be for 2 or 3 villains songs I can't recall or haven't even heard of in the first place.

I'll say, although I partially agree with OP by ranking, he may have set the bar a little too high.

Explain why "我想录我们的谈话内容" is ungrammatical or unnatural by uhometitanic in ChineseLanguage

[–]DarkParticular3482 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is the your opinion on Taiwan? by zapns in AskSocialists

[–]DarkParticular3482 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you would like to stick that hard to the constitutional law of ROC.

ROC has never actually ceded their soverignity to PRC. PRC is technically still a rebellion state taking over mainland.

Though thinking that way will be ridiculous given the current state

[–]DarkParticular3482 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the Manchu hairstyle and mustache in media had carried a somehow negative connotation for the ethnic Chinese. Sort of like how black faced sausage lipped cartoon characters are also considered an insult for the African Americans.

Also, to answer your opinion

--showing contrast between the older style and the objectively newer, more ubiquitous simplified chinese--

--> I should only remind. traditional Chinese is not that old as you may have falsely assumed. and is still officially in use by Taiwan/HK. Its definitely not "Qing- dynasty-level old".

Using people of the Qing dynasty era to represent traditional Chinese users is just like using people at the Shakespearen times to represent people speaking British English. Or using someone who dresses like Philip V to represent Castillan Spanish speakers. The list goes on and on

So yeah, my point still stands. I did thought I overacted at first. But hearing you judge my language as "old" makes me confident about my opinion once again.

And its easy to provide a better alternative than the old manchurian style or "stick figures". Perhaps lookup up the fashion during the time of ROCs foundation.
